    - KINGSLEY NORTH -
    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    I happened upon a CZcams video from "Currently Rockhounding" ... in this particular video, he was explaining about agates and jasper. I didn't have time for the whole video, but I did learn what makes an agate.
    While a rock is being formed, a hole happens from perhaps water, or even gas. The water is full of silica .. and that is when an agate is formed.
    I thought you might enjoy knowing that factoid and where I found it.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před 23 dny +1

      Apparently the way they're formed is a hotly debated topic between geologists. I'm not sure if they argue about it at the level Jared explained it or if it's the details that are not agreed upon.

    • @maryseaman312
      @maryseaman312 Před 23 dny

      @@MichiganRocks well, since geologists are more sold on the age of rocks than they are knowledgeable about how they are formed ... I think Jared very ably explained the minerals involved - - in my experience with geologists (very limited experience) they tend to be more expert on certain areas than they are in general - - sometimes, even I can figure out that the "specialization" of the scientists have removed many from other aspects of reality. I could say they are narrow-minded in many ways, but that would start an entirely different aspect of the elephant. LOL.

      I'd suggest buying either jaspers or agates. They're both hard rocks and hard rocks polish the best. I like to buy from the Rock Shed or Kingsley North, but there are plenty of other good sellers out there too. When it comes to buying grits, both of those stores sell quality products. You can find links to both places in the description of this video.

      @sssssssss4258 Watch Rob's videos on rock tumbling. They are terrific for beginners and pros. He's always doing something different and fun. Keep in mind that basic rotary rock tumblers take a LOT of time. The first stage can take a week, weeks or months to get the rocks smooth. Patience is key. But rotary tumblers are great for the first stage. Most pros consider vibratory rock tumblers necessary for stage 2 through 4 because it cuts the polish time significantly. Don't believe the rotary tumbler guidelines of a week for each step. You're almost guaranteed to be disappointed. I order virtually all my grit through the Rock Shed. And a terrific rock to buy there is Mexican Lace agate. One of the prettiest agates anywhere.

    The translucent green agate at 8:58 - have you ever used the flashlight mode on your phone to backlight translucent rocks? There's something about the LED they put in phones that does a particularly good job of showing off translucent rocks. With some research and some trial-and-error, I found a specific LED part number that recreated the great backlighting effect, and used them to build a display box with a grid of these LEDs, each in it's own shallow depression. When the display box is fully populated with translucent rocks (carnelians are our local find), it makes a pretty cool looking display.

    • @MichiganRocks

      Yes, I have used my phone's light to backlight them. I thought the LED flashlight I used in the video worked about the same, at least I never noticed a difference. Your display box must look incredible all lit up. That's a big project, but I'll bet it was well worth the effort.

My husband and I took a 3 day trip up around the Keweenaw peninsula in it, and it averaged 8 mpg! Had a leak in the roof, so my grandmother sold it, without her ever driving it. I have not had problems with my polish, but I have always used the same stuff. There is definitely a difference. I find that a lot of what is being sold as polish is 1200 aluminum oxide. I consider that to be a pre-polish. I would highly recommend that you go to either the Rock Shed or Kingsley North for your polish. The Rock Shed sells theirs as "8000 grit aluminum oxide polish". Fantastic finds! I'm still thinking of a trip up that way. When you say "remote beach" -- would it be safe for a woman traveling alone? As an example, I feel totally safe on Presque Isle off of Erie County PA. Within reason there... you don't have to run far to find another person and usually it's crawling with both tourists and residents in the summer. However, at the right times it's still possible to find remote beaches where you can feel alone and feel safe. 🤔

      We drove about 45 minutes away from civilization on dirt roads. There is no cell service for miles. We only saw one other Jeep and a person on a motorcycle the whole way there. There was no one on the beach at all. I have gone to this beach alone before and was very careful not to twist an ankle or something because it would be very hard to get back to my vehicle that way. I would not recommend going alone. However, there are plenty of other beaches in the general area that are closer to civilization and would be very safe to go to.
