  • The Great Central Railway held an over night event starting on the evening of 1st June and finishing on the morning of 2nd June. It was a chance to see steam passenger and freight, as well as diesel passenger and freight travelling the line during the night to re-create the olden days of railway travel.
I was there from dusk till dawn, and I will admit is was a challenge to film and photography due to the lack of light. It is not until you are on the stations at night do you realise the lack of light there is.

Excellent, reminds me of being a kid in the late '50's early 60's. When the through traffic ended and no night trains, we couldn't sleep as it was so quiet, the 9f's hauling the "runners" from Annesley to Woodford Halse roaring up the hill towards Whetstone station, the vibration used to rattle the glass in my bedroom window, great memories.

Very nice. I watched some of their live stream overnight. Hopefully they'll do it again and sort some webcams so more of us can experience this line(that should never have been closed). It looked like special atmosphere.

My wife and I enjoyed watching the trains passing through Rotheley and Quorn stations into the early hours . The glorious sounds of the engines were magnified in the still of the night. We left around 2:45am, after a nice warming cup of tea in the unique Naafi. The tea rooms on the stations had an amazing atmosphere, with the fires burning, war time radio, etc. Many thanks to the ladies on the nigh shift, and all the volunteers at the stations as well as working the trains - and many more behind the scenes - who all enabled it to happen. I was great to chat to staff (including lifelong retired drivers, etc), as well as younger enthusiasts, Thanks GCR. You were blessed with the weather too, so you could say that the moon shone on the righteous! Do it again, please. And if there is a next time and you missed it this time around, make sure you go next time.

Thank you Keith. I agree there is certainly a different atmosphere at night and also the stations.

Good on yer for sticking it out for the night.
Considering the lack of light, you got some good shots & captured the atmosphere nicely.
P.S. you survived the 11 Oclock ghost train & didn't get a visit from "Ted Holmes".
    😆👍

That was a challenge when the light went as didn't realise how dark the stations were. Thanks for watching and your comment:-)

Sign me up if it happens again. It proves to me that the GCR is a railway that is going places. FORWARD.

I overheard a member of staff talking and not sure if it will be a yearly thing or something that will happen every so often. We will have to wait and see. I know they did it around this time of the year due to time it got dark and light.
