  • When Alf has to try & servive Christmas on his state pension, he tries to con the local vicor into providing him with a Christmas hamper, by pretending it is for a lonely sick old lady that he knows.

My old mum realised she had not paid her TV licence fee for a few months before Christmas in 89 & when we visited her on Boxing day she was eating some chicken breast left overs for her dinner......Not in my entire life have I ever been so angry as I was on that day. Apart from kidnapping her and bringing her home with us, I have never paid the BBC a penny since then. And mum spent every Christmas with us until 1997 when she passed on her birthday 24th December 1997.... We may laugh n scoff at these old comedy programmes, but the truth & reality kicks home to those of us who remember.

Watching the first five minutes and what strikes me is the skill Johnny Speight has in writing - in writing _great_ comedy.
There's nothing fancy or dramatic about three or four people sat in a pub watching life go by, but while the chat is pure trivia the delivery from Speight and the actors is for a clever satire on life. This is writing and comedy on the level of Galton & Simpson - nothing is really going on on the screen no, but the sheer irony and observations on life in the dialogue is absolutely brilliant comedy as there _is_ a certain amount of truth to what the petty little argument on the screen is all about.
Johnny Speight comes from that generation of writers Galton & Simpson came from, and it's a skill and gift for sharp observation and satire that I don't think exists in todays generation of writer. It's one reason you could never get the tight and confined style of comedy Speight, Galton, and Simpson, all excelled in. No one today can do it....

Alf Garnet reminded me of my dad, a right miserable old moaner, moaned about everything, Alf Garnet was real to life, if you went into pub backthen thats how it was, Sundays was when the family got up and instead of going to church they went to the pub in the morning and then back home for Sunday lunch then in the evening back to the pub for the night until chucking out time. You didnt need to go far every street had a pub, known as your local, one thing I can say is people in those days were much happier then then they are now, and the pubs were full, unlike now one by one they all disappearing and beer was much cheaper, I blame all these foreign beers too much choice.

He is a hard man to get along with, mad as a march hare ! Fred Johnson has 3 divorces under his belt.
This is the most fun wife by far 👌

So funny, Johnny Speight was a genius comedy writer and a lefty as was Warren Mitchell. Right wingers can't write comedy but are always the perfect fodder for characters like Alf.

@Paul Brook its because he is one of the people hired by the government to actively comment on issues that divide the collective people, if the group say yes, he will say no, or vice versa. check out his youtube page and that will say a lot to what he is as there will be no content and his page is only created to search through the comment sections. i would wager money on the fact that if you search for videos on governmental issues or madeline mccann or political issues, go through the comments and you will find him there doing the same thing, disagreeing with the collective mass....look at the top of the comments on this video, he is there saying the same thing to someone else, how many times do you need to comment on one video unless you are not commenting on the video but rather commenting on the comments.
