    WAIT A MINUTE. Watching the episode back, Kendra mentions being given to her Watcher very young to the point she doesn’t remember her parents. If she was made the Slayer when Buffy died that would have been…a few months ago? Maybe this is just a mistake from the writing but there’s something fishy here because that time scale does not work. Unless the culture Kendra was brought up in gives girls of a certain age to Watchers? Seems weird though.
    Since I’m writing one of these, I have some additional thoughts on the dynamic between Angel, Spike, and Dru. I feel right now that the dynamic when they were all vampires was very subservient to Angel. I’d forgotten he was BOTH of their sire, and I think the trio very much had him at its head. Considering the conversations this episode, I think Spike had a thing for Dru, pined for her, fancied her, however you want to put it, but she was having a sexual relationship with Angel (that Spike wasn’t aware of), and Angel and Dru’s relationship was this toxic/attraction cycle that was very much not good for Dru at all, and definitely twisted and evil from Angel’s perspective in the way he was playing with her considering what he did to her family. I also think Spike’s feelings during this time for Dru probably made him complicit in the plot I theorise about in this ep about Dru organising the gypsy curse. I’d go so far as to say they both were involved in order to supplant their master.
    There’s a slight plot hole in that in how Angel tried to fool Spike about being ‘bad’ when they first met in the show, but if Angel doesn’t suspect Spike even now (which I’d say he doesn’t) of being part of the plot to get his soul back, then that makes sense. It also tracks that Spike so easily saw through it - because he already KNEW.
    I’d reiterate that the cracking of Dru’s psyche we see in the present is down to this vampire self of hers trying to reconcile liking/serving a master that wrought such pain on her human life. I think it was silly of me to say they don’t remember their human lives. What I meant was that they don’t care about them (which is what the show I think has said), and it’s that that I meant to refer to with Dru. HOWEVER, I think considering the egregious acts that Angel committed against her before he turned her is the kind of antagonism that stays with you, even after such a change as vampirism and losing one’s soul. I wouldn’t say she holds any emotional connection to her past life, but as an egotistic vampire the fact a being ‘got one over on’ her so horribly is something she WOULD care about.
    These are all just theories of course, so please don't confirm or deny anything. Just putting my thoughts out there :)

It is one of the first scenes that really shows David Boreanaz acting skill. He shows a part of Angel that we haven't seen before, but is really important to understanding who Angel is. A great part 2 to What's My Line. We see Kendra as a total opposite to Buffy in how she approaches her work as a Slayer. Some great comedy moments too with Kendra talking about the Slayers Handbook, Buffy saying there's a handbook, and Giles saying when he saw Buffy, he thought the handbook would be useless. We also have the start of 'Xandelia', a most unlikely pair that absolutely nobody was shipping at this stage in the show. From vitriolic insults, to intense passion! Spike teaming up again with Drusilla as mentioned in earlier reactions, Spike, Drusilla and Angel/Angelus have a interwoven past down through the centuries which gives great drama to the show. An interesting point regarding Kendra and Buffy leaving their emotions separate to their slaying, even though Kendra seems detached from emotion, Buffy is very much aware of her vocation as Slayer and comes through in incredibly hard situations when having to choose the right path to follow, even though knowing it will seriously harm her emotionally. At this point you can really see the show becoming much more slicker.

    As I understand it, vampires do retain their thoughts and experiences before they are turned, they just loose their soul - so they might not feel the same way about them.. So can Drus sadness and rage as a human loosing her family retain as a memory and leave an echo in the vampire, a frustration she might want to take out on angel? And maybe before Angel was her sire and her family and now that he turned against vamires she can release that on him? It's a really interesting premise to try to understand vamires feelings..
    When they turn they loose the soul, remain the same otherwise and a demon takes the place of the soul. But what feelings do you actually need a soul for?.. how do feelings change or how are they different without a soul or a conscience? can you feel rage without a soul? Can you feel sadness or compassion? Might be a far reach to ask if they are able to feel love, since it's a selfless feeling but can they feel obsession or something similar that could be interpreted as love? Like what might be between Dru and Spike maybe.. Is that love? Him wanting to restore her and taking care of her?
    Ozs hair changes since the actor had a lot of different roles and this allowed him to also stay on Buffy, as far as I know.

    Seeing part two of your What's My Line reaction pop up in my feed this morning was a brilliant way to start my Friday, Tyler, so thank you for that. These episodes definitely bring up so many interesting bits of character development - Xander/Cordy, Willow/Oz, Buffy and her 'no one messes with my boyfriend'and her realisation that being the Slayer is integral to who she is, and of course Kendra and her emotional development. Then there's the whole Angel, Spike, Dru triangle with throws up so much interesting stuff. On a side note, the ridiculous music over the Xander/Cordy kisses is the show taking the piss out of itself - the writers were fully aware what a trope it was to have two opposite characters kissing in moments of adversity. Great reaction and insightful analysis as always. Looking forward to your thoughts as we move into the second half of the season.

    Just a reminder that vampires do remember their lives before they were turned! To quote Buffy in Lie To Me: "You die, and a demon sets up shop in your old house, and it walks, and it talks, and it remembers your life, but it's not you."
    I still think that's a somewhat contentious take on vampirism in the show - as things progress, we'll see that vampires do retain some kind of "imprint" of the person they were before (Drusilla's madness is another good example, as it preceded her becoming a demon). But yeah, either way, they definitely have the memories at the very least.

    Your questions will be answered, particularly the vampire lore, as we dive deeper into the series. What they know, what they remember, how their vampiric personalities are formed, the trio of Angel/Spike/Dru, all of it. The question, however, of why Drusilla is quite mad was answered in an earlier episode. Angel told Buffy in the episode Lie to Me that *before* he turned Drusilla into a vampire, he "drove her mad" by tormenting her, killing her family.
    Also, it's not a huge deal, but as this series is from the 1990s, some of the language isn't too acceptable these days. One thing is their use of the word "gypsy," which is a racial slur. The word to use is Romani, and as I have Romani blood and ancestry, I try to gently let people know that when it comes up. Same with saying that someone "gyped" you when you were cheated in a deal, as that comes from the stereotype of Romani thievery and dishonesty. This isn't meant to be an angry bark at you, or anyone, but I do want to point out the word "gypsy" is rather offensive. Thank you for understanding.

    Doing the First/Middle/Last thing has skewed your perception of the lore a bit.
    "One girl in all the world..."
    The Buffy/Kendra thing was an anomaly.
    The Watchers Council is a very large worldwide organization doing many things, presumably the most important of which is training the Slayer and potentials like baby
    Kendra..
    Of course...they couldn't be arsed to inform either Watcher of the existence of two Slayers...which resulted in them nearly killing each other.
    Well done, lads.

    Giles did try giving Buffy the handbook. It was the 1st thing he presented to her when they met for the first time. Buffy rejected it, and by the end of the episode, Giles realized it wouldn't help him train her. Remember the Book titled "Vampyr"

But at the same time, I don't want more shows crowding up and delaying your Buffy and Good Place reactions, lol. Maybe you should do the first/middle/last for The Vampire Diaries and/or True Blood like you did with Buffy, just for funsies, as both series have ended after several seasons apiece.

    I am a huge Buffy fan. From The cheesy movie onwards. Buffy has some amazing characters, some great stories and plot themes explored and a lot of stuff that I absolutely hate. You can enjoy it as it is, take the good and leave the test behind but Buffy was a huge moment for female characters. The Angel series has my favourite character arc of any character, ever (I won’t give spoilers of who it is) And as much as I have always hated the Cordelia character the actress did a fantastic job.

    This isn't a spoiler because you've seen the finale. Remember the spell they do. Buffy says every girl who could be a Slayer, will be a Slayer. Some girls are born with the potentiel to be a Slayer one day. This must have been Kendra's case. They knew she could be one. She also might never have been called, but the possibility was there. You'll learn more about this later.

    Wow, your Kendra predictions are so wrong. No shade just amusement.
    The Dru and Angel relationship is complex, but not as simple as she just resents him for what happened to her. Angel gaining a soul, I think, is what allows some of that repressed outrage bleed through.
    Good call on Spike being a balm. I like that line about him rather be fighting Buffy, it's a callback to how he's killed two slayers, and probably views it as a challenge. Can't wait for future episodes.

  • @lesleymaroquin5777
    @lesleymaroquin5777 Před 6 měsíci +6

    They remember prevamp life. Remember jesse in the first episode? And there is a slayer line. Not every girl could possibly become a slayer. There are only a few in the line in every generation and its random which one gets chosen. And they're all around the world. When a slayer gets tapped so does a watcher. There are many of them as well. Hopefully that doesn't spoil too much.

    • @spamfilter32
      @spamfilter32 Před 6 měsíci +2

      I don't think it is random which girl becomes a Slayer. Giles hinted as much when he said that Buffy was meant to come to Sunnydale. But while the Watchers clearly have a way of finding which girls have the potential to become Slayers, they don't have a way of knowing which one will get tapped.

    The Watcher's Council pinpoints, mystically, girls with the Slayer gene marker. These girls are potential slayers...they are trained up in case they are called.
    Buffy was activated but they were late to finding her prior to that, and sometime in the movie(starring Kristy Swanson as Buffy), I believe the Watcher she had was killed.
    Watchers are also all trained up in case they are picked to be with the active slayer.
    The movie was poorly done, prior to the show getting pitched.
    Joss walked away from the movie because it was twisted up to what he didn't like, and the studio still put it out.
    He was approached some time after by a producer who wanted to do the show, but more on the vision Joss wanted. Hence...the show was born.
    The Kendra character is a sore spot for me, because her character wasn't respected enough to be fleshed out.
    Like a lot of 80's and 90's shows(and some even today), they had lack of interest in fleshing out their black characters because it was more of a "hey look. We added a black person. We're diverse on our show."...only to do them dirty and/or killed off.
    The actress wasn't given any accent coach to prepare for the character. There was no detail about exactly where she was from.
    Her being given away, having no possessions and not being able to talk to boys, neatly wraps up all the things they don't want to let her have.
    She's gorgeous and bothers to wear makeup and have her hair done, yet she's basically clueless about attraction and unable to have feminine wiles.
    No background info on her family dynamic because they gave her away without keeping in touch with her...makes no sense.
    The theatrical music for Xander and Cordelia is pretty much on the nose with the "tongue in cheek" fun poking at the trope. Here, the show is just pretty much calling themselves out, showing how they don't always take themselves so seriously.
    Druscilla remembers everything about her human life. That information is stored in your mind and body like DNA. Personality traits, ticks, habits...all there.
    Dru had Seer abilities before she was turned, after the people in Prague did whatever it is they did (again. I think the comic books gave more detail on that, but I didn't read it)she relied on the Tarot cards to help her see things.
    I won't go beyond saying that because it gets spoilery.
    Angel did tell Buffy that she was different and that's why he chose to take her and mess her up before turning her.
    The demon sponges up all that you were. He and Darla did horrible things to their victims. So, she has a little bit of anger towards him, but also that Stockholm's Syndrome.

  • @butterflypooo
    @butterflypooo Před 6 měsíci +1

    I think the whole Xander/Cordelia music playing when they kiss is meant to sort of make fun of the cheesiness of the “haters to lovers trope”. But it’s fair to just hate it lol.
