The copper wire's a great tip, thanks for sharing, your comment about better eyesight when you're young reminded me of the time we used to work on miniature devices so small everything had to be done on the screen through the microscope.

I like the idea of wrapping a smaller gauge copper wire around the tip of the iron. The was a great tip! (no pun intended) I stated out with through hole components, but quickly realized everything was going to SMDs. So now I am saving up money to get a microscope.

Brilliant, and gives me confidence to replace battery in my Garmin 910XT sports watch. The battery has three wires red, black and green. Is there any chance of damaging the battery by the sequence (rgb gbr brg ) of soldering? I worry because the new battery may be partially charged, the Iron is earthed, and the watch circuitry has no visible internal Isolation Switch (all the on/off/etc functions are via the micro chip circuitry).

i cant wait to try this!
i have a loose micro USB port on an elite xbox controller and the contacts are like 2mm wide 1mm apart and i have an old xbox 360 usb cord i want to install permanently and this is likely the only way i could use my current soldering iron with 1 style of basic large tip
micro usb has 5 connections 5 volt, data +, data -, ID mode detect, and Ground. but the USB cable i have from an xbox 360 controller only has4 connections and the 360 controller wired controller has no 5th connection as ID for USB connection. can anyone tell me if the new xbox one controller really uses the 4th pin micro usb ID connection?? i doubt it as that conection seems to be for usb memory drives communicating with devices but i also happen to know new xbox one controller receive firmware updates and the old 360 wired controllers did not
can nayone tell me the significance of the 4 pin ID / mode selcet connection for new xbox one controllers? cna i get away with just soldering a full size USB in place of the micro USB without the micro usb's 4th pin ID?

I gather that this was a demonstrative video for micro soldering in general. Good idea coiling the coper wire. However, in this particular example, since you are soldering in the corner of the pcb, you could actually use a soldering iron with a normal tip to do the job. Cheers.

It is just the same as soldering with an iron - it hardens as soon as the heat is removed.

Question: How do you get the wire hot enough to melt the solder without burning up the wire itself? I'm dealing with turntable phono cartridge wire and the wire melts faster than the solder.
