- Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday while speaking during the discussion on the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha said she calls it both an honour and shame to speak about the bill, 75 years after Independence. She highlighted that the number for male and female turnout were nearly the same in the last general elections, i.e. 66.7 per cent and 66.8 per cent respectively, but women’s candidature was at an abysmal 9 per cent, up from 7 per cent in 2004.

When Smriti says support the women's reservation bill she deceptively means support the clause that say "delimitation" which is subject to discussion and consensus.
But why the discussion and consensus on the Bill after 9 years? And why just before the coming 2024 election?
Why not the govt go ahead and pass it just as it did hastily with other bills of lessor importance?

Correct me if im wrong but don't we have better numbers in lower legislation ONLY because there are reservation for women on those seats so it is compulsory for selected seats every time to be elected by a woman- who are unfortunately more often than not immediate relations of the men who contest the seats. (We all know this, and such a shame).
Mahua's point is not addressed by Smriti because changes and power come from the top. BJP is simply complying with the law when they give tickets to women in lower legislation but TMC makes an active choice to send women to the Parliament (even though it is not compulsory for them to do so). Women in the upper houses will give inspiration for more women to come to the Parliament. BJP can also actively make this choice to give women more voice in this election instead of waiting to change the law in order to do so.
Smriti Iraniji is just so eloquent with facts rather than some lose base not so known international data.
