    QA time stamps:
0:41 What happened to the rest of the world? Has the entire planet gone permanently cold?
1:23 What happened to the British Royal family and other powerful people of the era?
2:04 Where and how many generator sites were there? Are there any other technologies used to survive the cold?
3:32 Where did the people of Winterhome end up? Is the city of New Manchester indeed the survivors of Winterhome?
3:55 Why do our people travel north? Wouldn’t it make more sense to go closer to the equator?
5:42 What exactly is a Steamcore?
6:56 Some backstory of Tesla City?
7:40 Why didn’t the government take control of the Generators? What was the military doing?

      We will tell later
      Obvious answer
      We don't know

      Obvious answer
Personally I learned nothing new in this, I do not consider that bad, for a reason that when making the game you probably did not expect it to become so popular and did not think you need to deepen the lore so much, although I think nothing prevents you to do it in the second game. The problem for me is that this video is pointless because you avoided most of the questions, because for most of them the answer doesnt exist, and its okay but then why make the video? Of course if you make another video and it will have something new for me, then I will change my position but for now its that I do not like this video and I learned nothing new from it.

@@alangreene5776 I agree with Zennavo. While it is very likely the elites and royal family would prioritise there own safety and spare no expense on some paradise in the frozen hell hole of the world (or at least try). I think it would be to boring of an outcome. Sure you can say “oh it shows how *insert* institution or figures are corrupt”, but that’s just an easy cynical, par for the course scenario for virtually all during and post apocalyptic governments, that they’re massive selfish dicks. But I think as the curtain begins to fall, most of the government and Royal Family choose to stay in London, to freeze and die in their seats. It helps serve the theme of: this is the FUCKING END OF THE WORLD. Who cares about money accept for burning it? Humanity needs to pull together no matter what a endure the storm. After all this is an alternative Victorian era World, maybe Queen Vicky or her counterpart is just as melancholic as she was in real life. I haven't investigated hugely the lore and played through only once but i always thought it is a near perfect efficiency (perhaps beyond our current technology level) of heat and electricity generator. That just made sense to me, don't know if that's it or if there's more to it.
Explaining it more would kinda defeat the "we have lost all knowledge on how to build them" if they would be explained in detail in-game, leaving it as a mystery for both the characters in the game and to us.

The steamcores always reminded me of the Steam Balls that were invented in the 2004 film SteamBoy, which explains that they had near limitless steam power and only three were needed to power the "steam castle" to fly off the ground. Of course those steam balls had most likely far more capacity the the Steam Cores of the Frostpunk game in storing energy in both heat and pressure, but I thought the similarities were interesting.

As a person that has studied the history of technology and have recently visited a tech museum which contained an original steam powered dynamo that can produce electricity from a steam engine (yes before power plants and wired electricity became a regular tech there were steam engine dynamos that could power a house or a small factory). So i will give you my opinion on what i think a Steamcore is.
A steamcore is a miniaturised steam dynamo that can produre enough electricity to power a large machine or a small factory with very little energy loss. The reason they are so rare in the FP universe is because they were just invented recently and they had a lot of small components that required advanced machine factories to produce. So not a lot of them got produced and when the winter came and civilization crumbled the advanced machine factories were abandoned making this new tech a very rare commodity.
It makes sense why you can produce them in Tesla city, because that settlement had a lot of advanced electric tech and machine shops brought from the States in order to give them a heads up on survival.
It is basically this universe's version of a small nuclear reactor that is used to power submarines in our time.

There is actually a very good reason for "why go north?"
Let us assume that the great freeze ended up going to the point where 10-15 degrees north and south of the equator are still always ice free (edit: That is, the OCEANS are), and a bit past that has seasonal ice for a bit before going to full freeze-over. Great, right? Well, about that:
These areas tend to, pre-Winter, be jungles and deserts. Not great places to grow or obtain food. And the vast majority of the population fleeing the more polar areas are all rushing over there.
So a huge amount of people are now going to a place that, frankly, is horrible for growing the food necessary to feed them all. It is a humanitarian disaster of extreme proportions, and massive conflict would break out almost immediately. Any civilization that exists there would likely be gone within a couple years. But some humans would survive. Half of them may be cannibal tribes by that point, mind you. Perhaps by the start date indicated for the second game, there could be some semblance of return to basic primitive society in some areas. The tech is probably mostly gone though, outside the rare heavily steampunk industrialized city that was actually built in the tropics pre-Winter, perhaps one of which may even still have society and culture left in it.
The fact that most of the native life in those areas are now suddenly being exposed to temperatures too cold for them now will also basically kill off almost all the native life, whereas up north, a lot of life is already fairly adapted to the cold, and thus can at least potentially survive for a while (until The Storm comes and mostly wipes clean any native life in the areas it affects). Whereas a couple weeks of below freezing with what is normal snow for, say, modern Chicago or something is probably enough to kill just about everything in the Amazon rain forest, for instance. So most of the surviving life would likely be invasive species that people had brought with them, and now in certain places may have been able to handle the new conditions. Pigs are definitely one of the animals that would survive this scenario. Humans brought them everywhere, and they do a bang up job of managing to find a way to eat stuff basically anywhere they go (its a major issue for wildlife conservation in the modern world actually).
Now, let us again look back North. We have relatively small groups of people, going to a large number of PLANNED generator sites (how many actually got fully built, let alone survived, is unknown, but given the sites have numbering schemes upwards of 100, at least that many were initially PLANNED, with Last Autumn being 113 and there being a failed 120 you found while there). These sites are planned for the cold, and are being set up with tech that can allow survival in the cold to at least a reasonable degree. Come what may, each successfully constructed site may survive or not, but each one is a microcosm of civilization meant to endure the Winter and survive.
In short, your chances of survival, and ESPECIALLY civilization, are probably higher if you are one of the people who went north, rather than fleeing south into the *Equator of Death.*

Frostpunk 2 should include a Greenland DLC where everybody is just vibing and having fun no matter how cold it gets.
Edit: Just thought of way to make that an interesting scenario. The player knows of some crazy city-wipe level storm but the people don't, if you attempt to prepare aggressively you will be rejected and fail, if you don't prepare the city will be wiped out. So you have to carefully manage public view and preparedness.

  • @looseycanon
    @looseycanon Před rokem +22

The fate of the Royal family was an idea I thought about a while back. Even created entire scenario in my head... I called it, "The Trams". The idea was, that a place were selected poorly with very little coal available in a unique map, which was to be amalgamation of three maps. The rifts, the crater and the canyon, the generator and key feature of this scenario being placed in the canyon and the objective being placed on far end of the crater. The key idea of the map was, that the player must deal with a number of challenges, some of which would have been new, some of which would have been reschuffeled, but mostly dealing the players ability to quickly shift micro and macro focus he takes, when playing the game. There would have been three milestones along the way, failing to meet each in time would result in game over.
    1) Build the new Imperial pallace before the royal family arrives (there would a dreadnaught actually showing up and you'd deconstruct it over time for steel and steamcores). The first challenge, would be about how aggressively can the player expand the city without the use of scouting, severely limited workforce, no way to import new people and no automatons (pure micro), until first hudrle is cleared and reach the Imperial Pallace, which, fortunately, needs just some finishing touches. Clearing the first step give player 5 days to prepare for a storm and second hurdle would begin after it passed. The reason, why exploration would not be available in the beginning, would be that there was nothing to explore yet. Basically, where Last Autumn ended, this scenario would begin. The errors of site location would only be discovered on site. The limitations, which would permiate the entire level would be not having access to coal thumpers, walldrills being located only in the part of the map with the pallace.
    2) With the first storm passing, a number of settlements nearby would pick up and leave, be it due to panic, generator blowing up or them getting forced out of the settlement. There would be also survivors from the wilderness as such. There would be three distnicting features of survivors. What afinity they have (order, faith or none initially), whether they came from a city or not and from which one and what type of survivor they are (Worker, Engineer or Civil servant). Civil servant would be type of survivor, who'd operate a number of new buildings dealing with the needs of the Royals and with public order. Problem, they won't do any other job, except for faith buildings, order buildings, the public house and their own special buildings, which ther would be a lot of. Some special buildings would provide things for the Royals and provide certain services to the city, helping the player to permanently offset discontent in the city. Why are survivor origins distinguished? Because if the player manages to save enough engineers from particular city (there would be total of four). This would be necessary, because permanent debufs to discontent would appear as a result of some events and of failure to keep a promise (about one tenth of discontent raised would be permanent). This would put player in a tough spot, because their economy would get less and less per capita productive, as their population increases, because more and more people would need to be put into civil servant role. There would be two ways to solve this. One would be to rely on Automatons replacing lost human laobur in those industries, where they can be employed, or to utilize technologies brought by city survivors, each sporting a unique tree about the same length as faith/order book of laws. The first of these cities would bring greater use of electricity beyond just. These would be windfarms, which would always end up destroyed in storms and have to be rebuilt, but use of which would increase heating in all connected buildings, as long as there was enough electricity, meaning the player could outright turn off the generator between storms and stockpile coal. Other upgrades would improve efficiency in different industries, and focus on more efficient use of eletricity, allowing to electrify more buildings. The amount of electricity generateable would, however be finite, meaning the player will have to decide, how will he utilize the resource of wind. Second city would be a local city and would provide bonuses to scouting and hunting, making scouts even faster and allowing them to search one more time the area, they visited earlier. Based on which training the player will research, the scouts will find additional resources at each previously scouted site. If the player choses to research this tech tree in it's entirety, they would restore hunters to full efficiency even after the last storm. Third city in this scenario is a research station and they bring reseach into new materials and new industries providing said materials. These would allow the player to individually upgrade buildings to better insulate them (stacks with standing insulation upgrades) and to upgrade multiple times. The idea being, that fully upgraded buildings would get so well insulated thanks to new materials, that these buildings could operate even through a storm at coldest as chily even with generator on steam level 1. Problem is, this material requires the player to covnert a hothouse to produce the underlying base resource and production of this is slow, meaning the player could run out of steam cores and space, as they deploy this technology alone. Foruth and last (and the furthest) city was a major trading center in this region. They bring upgrades to outposts and trams, of which on this map would be twelve, eight of which would be usable simultaneously and four of which would be the primary source of resources for player's city. This is what the name comes from. Four stations for massive trams are built near edge of the canyon. The player would be able to build tram lines (using automatons) to the wrecks of the other cities and have them dismantled, even through storms, bringin in the resources the player needs. Everything, except steamcores. Once population of the city reaches over 3000, the second storm ups it's head and begins to approach the city. After which the scenario can be completed by finding the other dreadnaught.
    3) Maintain order and the rule of the Royals. This goal is the last and lasts from the moment, the city population reaches 500 until the end of game, or the faction leaders are assasinated. Purpose book of laws works differently here. The player doesn't select from these. Whenever discontent reaches 4/5 of the meter, the more discontent faction declares an ultimatum and passes a law (without expending the book of laws), forcing the player into a promise. Which side of the two books of laws gets used is determined, by which part of the population is more dissatisfied with the players choices to ingame events, which begin to pop up all the time. Early in the game, more beneficial laws are picked up (have guard stations, have a house of healing...), but as more and more drastic laws get accepted, the player needs to react and ultimately, to head off the game over (leader of the faithful declares them selves god/leader of the order faction dictator and their faction deposes the royals and the player). If the player doesn't have counter law against these (like public pennance or forecful persuasion), the factions become enboldened (shows as increased discontent of the particular faction), and force another law, running ever faster to their particular endgame. This is where civil servants come in and special buildings can be built. These, as long as their working conditions are met, offset agitation of each faction (some for one, some for both. For instance, a courthouse would offset both prison and public pennance. the idea being the just process for order and public pennance as actual punishment being signed off on by the court, lowering it's use and thus power of the church), with the final one being assasination of both leaders, which gives the bad ending for completing the scenario (you've crossed the line). These special buildings, are ministry of health (improves efficiency of healthcare facilites and prevents scripted death when building house of healing for the first time), already mentioned Courthouse, psychological hospital (offsets righteous denunciation and prevents scripted death of poet), Bureau of Royal Investigation (offsets pledge of loyalty and forceful persuasion) and Secret service center (Offsets Faithkeepers).
With the ultimate objective being locating a lost dreadnaught carrying some of the younger members of the Royal family and bringing them home. There would also be "sidequests"
    1) Keeping at least one of four seedling archs located in the rits section of the map alive throught the scenario, with the penalty for losing them all being, inability to use hothouses to grow food.. The idea being, that hothouses would be stable source of food, while hunting would become less efficient with every passing storm, but they'd need reseeding after each storm passes.
    2) Building all four trams to bring in resources from wrecks of the other cities.
    3) building and filling the archives (each city would produce one relic, plus six more would be findable after second storm). Doing this would render hope meter obsolete, similarly like going all the way religeous.

About steam cores... I imagine them acting like a combination transformer/battery.
The generator creates huge amounts of high pressure steam, which is channelled along the pipes built into the streets to buildings. In the big industrial buildings like the coal mines or wall drills, the steam is fed into a core, which amplifies/regulates the flow to ensure the right pressure for the machinery inside the building. Lesser buildings don't need cores because of smaller demand for steam and/or simpler mechanisms, but heavy industry has both bigger power consumption and more complicated systems at work, requiring the precise mechanisms of a core to manage efficiently.
In an automaton, the core stores steam and releases it gradually to power the machine, regularly being replenished when it visits a steam hub (which themselves DON'T require cores because they're basically just fancy vents). And again, such a complex and intricate machine needs precision, only available through the higher-quality craftsmanship in a core.

  • @Raycheetah
    @Raycheetah Před rokem +14

I always imagined steam cores as precisely maufactured machine parts for managing steam flow.
1 - you can't manufacture them yourself, because the process requires such complex infrastructure and high quality alloys that it's simply impossible during / after the great freeze
2 - they are exclusively used in more complex buildings and machines: hothouse (you can't let it get too hot, or you kill the crops), factory (you build complex machines and need to work with precision), automatons (they've got their own boilers, but moving the legs and arms requires a high level of control)
3 - they are rare because the manufacturing process was expensive even before the great freeze
4 - you can harvest them from lots of other complex machinery, such as dreadnoughts, drills and other automatons. Carefully removing the whole control core when they can't be produced anymore makes sense

I answered with "Everything in Frostpunk is basically a futile gesture, humanity will die out. It's just a matter of time."
Her response was "Oh, now I'm sad :("
    * She didn't have a problem putting the children to work however lol
    Comments/Feedback etc: Game Design
    - Winterhome - An interesting scenario would be the Dreadnought eventually running aground, and you have to build a city around the still active engine. That could be interesting.
    - Last Autumn - The French utilizing the Juggernaut train system to have a perpetual motion machine. Just like in the movie/tv show Snowpiercer. That could be a very interesting evolution of the Frostpunk mechanics as well as a new format to play with in the universe established.

Think about it, a dug shelter already offers you some protection against the raging elements on the surface so all you have to do is manage a city's heating, resource income from surface outposts (probably), and a steady food supply. Given the protection from the underground, they could have even raised animals in heated/insulated farms or holding pens.

I think the French railway thing may also be a reference to Snowpiercer, as that was originally a French comic. Ofc, the conflicting time periods don't work, but it's a cool Easter egg nonetheless

@@tome4376 I mean, a train designed to withstand the snow coming from the french still works even if its older in time period.

Here's some questions, why can't we remove laws after they were set? and why no cannibalism option after choosing the snow pit?
