"I'm Jay Smooth" hell yes you are with that voice
Reminds me of Obama
tristan roberts exactly what i thought 😂
My thoughts exactly!! :D
I wasn't going to follow this crash course, but I'm glad I tried the first one out. It's worth it just for Smooth's voice! At the very least I'll put it on as I fall asleep
When I heard this presenter's name, I was skeptical. My doubt was misplaced.
Who else got linked to this by their teacher 👨🏫
I like this host, he seems pretty chill
Andrés Rodríguez some say he is pretty smooth
By the end of this crash course, I am expecting a diploma.
I earned my MA in Media Literacy, and I'm really happy to see this on here. For those engaging in Media Literacy for the first time, it's important to remember that literacy involves both reading AND writing (or, in ML's case, interpretation and production). Analyzing how media is created is aided by creating media itself. Once you learn some of the theory behind media, apply it to your own work, and you'll learn a lot more about the media creation process!
This has made me so, so excited. As a teacher of Media Studies I am thrilled that this is being taught. It is super relevant for the course!!
As a Bachelors of Media Studies, I am thrilled I even have a job right now!
I don't have media studies in any school per say but have learned much of media literacy in the past from you tube and internet otherwise. It will be interesting to see if I learn something new.
I am a media student can you help me with the topic of Media Literacy skills?
@gordan270 basically
This series is well needed for the vast majority of people today
Debo Datta CZcams comments are always civil.
Educating the viewers about the ways they are being manipulated ( Good or Bad ) so that they can chose freely is always a good thing :)
Hana Furlotte Yeah, maybe people will even used it on CrashCourse.
The advent of mass media in the information age means that media literacy and being critical of information is more important than ever. It's very good to learn about.
The medium is the message.
--McLuhan
TimeAndChance Bah. McLuhan drives me crazy.
TimeAndChance I
I read what you wrote. You know nothing of my work! How you got to write a comment about anything is totally amazing!
Ed Fagan Woody Allen film references! Nice.
Did you guys know McLuhan also wrote a book call "The Medium is the Massage"?
No I didn't misspell anything.
It's crazy to think about how much I can understand about this for the sole reason that I was raised with social media since I began my adolescent years. I cannot imagine the level of social consciousness regarding media literacy the generations to come will possess. Anyways, as always, an excellent video!
but then again, being raised with social media came with so many downsides too 😭 At what cost
What I like about Crash Course is that they present us with so much manageable and actually useful information in only ten minutes or so; something that would usually take days or weeks to learn in school, 'if' we learn it at all.
Thumbs up for we want you the Choir to Sing!
CRASH COURSE MUSIC THEORY AND HISTORY PLEASE :)
And of course, brilliant series. Can't wait for more.
DarklordofDOOM57 YESS
YEEEESSSS
I'd like history of maths.
not to mistake with the history of meth.
DarklordofDOOM57 YES I NEED THE STRAVINSKY/SCHÖNBERG SOAP OPERA IN MY LIFE (“Are you THE Arnold Schönberg? Well [my WWI superior officer] someone had to be.” My baby ❤️)
Oh my gosh, this series is sorely needed in today’s world. Thanks so much for making this, guys.
I’m really excited for this course! As a teenager surrounded by the world of tech and social media, its important for people to understand whats going on underneath the surface, how to navigate media and the downsides of social media and the new internet of things that seems to encompass everyone lately
When you said "has led to media literacy education in schools", it reminded me about how my school just made digital literacy (which is similar to media literacy) a required class the year I went there.
The comments of this series are going to be interesting.
Yours wasn't.
Would you rather that or the alternative?
DragoniteSpam This isn't going to turn out like Sociology.
we'll wait and see
DragoniteSpam None of the topics that Jay mentioned sound in any way controversial.
Sociology had a lot of social politics, which is why it didn't go down well in the comments section.
Damn this is important, so many people have no idea the importance and effects that media has on culture and society
Great start. Looking forward to watching this series unfold. You've done it again, Crash Course.
I majored in Media Studies for my undergrad and got to write a paper on internet culture (particularly the HP fandom) that I got to present at a communication conference a couple years ago! We had to take a media literacy course for our degree too and got to teach kids at a local elementary school. It’s a super fascinating subject and if you’re looking for a job in that vein I would totally recommend it!!
This is going to be one of the best crash course series.
This is so funny that this came out today because I’m currently (since 8pm) running an awareness program at my college on media literacy and identifying fake news sources.
This is clearly a sign. I spent all day yesterday trying to figure out what I want to do with my life and what I want to study. I fell over Media Studies and started to read about it and trying to find out what subjects I needed for it. And now this video. Yup. I think I might do Media Studies.
This series, of all the Crash Courses, has such a high potential to positively influence people.
Man, its been years since I last watched a J Smooth video. Shoutouts to this episode's writer. I appreciate the Titanic reference. I thought the blu-ray example was going to be a one off joke but to bring it up again with that quote was well executed.
I’m a third year Commmunications major and I’ve been WAITING for Crash Course to do a series on media theory!!! Im so excited to watch these!
Something I like to say related to media is that a Historian's job is to study and make sense of the past, whereas a Journalist's job is to study and make sense of the present- or in other words, to make Future Historians' jobs easier. I hope you cover journalistic ethics and the dangers of doing it irresponsibly in this series.
This series has come along just as I'm writing an essay for university about advertising and critical theory
So thank you so much for helping me out! 😂
Just discovered CrashCourse, thanks for the overview of media literacy Jay! Looking forward to the next installments in the series.
I teach students whose first language is not English and am doing a unit on media literacy soon - so I just want to express my gratitude not only for this series and for the very good subtitles! :)
Thanks for covering this important topic Crash Course! Can't wait to be able to share this series with my students.
Just starting this and I’m already really excited.
Love this. As a teacher this is a great tool for me to teach my students such an important skill.
Very enlightening! can't wait for the next course. I've been trying to explain to my old man how the media affects people now and then. I just can't find the right intro to put into their mind.. this helps me a lot! Encode and decode thats the word of the day.
This is not the series we deserve, but the one we need!
We seriously needed this. Thank you guys so much. Too many people calling real news fake and fake news real these days.
This is the best media-teaching-about video on CZcams! It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy to learn from!
This. Is. Epic. Super stoked, Crash Course!
Love this video. Packed with great info, no BS, not condescending.
Thanks Jay Smooth this is a topic I didn't think I needed. But found to be very interesting and hopefully helpful in the future. Can't wait for more.
Love the little cameraman to the audience right of the radio! And a good start to the series.
Please please please make this available in even more languages
Incredible! We just started a research group on the subject! We''re gonna keep an eye out for bibliographical references and authors leads! Thanks a lot!
I can't wait for the next episode ! I'm already just more alert to medias, and this is only the intro
I’m so glad you are hosting this, Jay!!!
Reason #42 why I'm a fan of this host: he is one of the rare CZcams video hosts who uses the word "comprise" correctly.
The thought bubble explanation is awesome!
My god does the world ever need this series!
Oh wow. Super-stoked about this series now.
I'm writing my undergrad thesis on this exact topic (specifically political effects) - can't wait for more videos!
Mike Rugnetta was here.
Jay Smooth...perfect name for this series.
My favorite course created by this organization yet.
So excited to see you here, Jay!
wtf!!!!!! Jay Smooth is teaching crash course!!! absolutely amazing!!!!
Loving his voice, and loving the topic. Thank you very much.
This was great. I'm a film professor who teaches a media theory and criticism course and this was very helpful. Thank you.
Love it! Can't wait to dive into the rest of the series! (I never comment on videos lol) keep it up, crash course!
Thank you for doing this. This is needed more now than ever.
Jay Smooth! Anything with Jay Smooth, I support all the way.
This looks like it's going to be an awesome course, and also timely.
This should be taught at school, like seriously, general school system is way too outdated
Lol I'm in school rn watching this in health
Excellent addition to Crash Course!
Host seems good and while I know a fair amount on the subject I can't wait for the deeper dive into the subject, IM IN
Thank you so much!! I have been waiting for this course without knowing it!
Great info! Crash Course instructors just always talk way too fast & slowing playback speed doesn't make it any better. He's actually my favorite & he has great delivery of the content/material, just wish it wasn't so rushed with Crash Course.
Keen. Been a while since I first covered this topic, so I definitely need a refresher.
Sooooo excited for this course 🙌🏻💞
I'm graduating in advertising this year, so this is going to be very useful!
This Crash Course series should be watched and carefully studied by all humans alive today. This subject is simply not taught in primary school. The world would be a better place if everyone had more media literacy!
This sounds really interesting! This is definitely something a lot of people need to look into.
I'm super excited for this series
Ooooo I’m excited for this series
Very important subject! Thank you!!
As a A Level media studies student I am so looking forward to this series
wow, so dope you guys are doing a series on this.
Dad: 2 mins in and I'm hooked! Love that green radio btw
I am so exited for this series!
I was apprehensive about a series not being hosted by the Green brothers but I love this guy wow
This already looks fantastic
20 seconds in and I know that this *the* serie I was waiting for.
yes! I love this! it's much needed! and as a student of film this helps a lot 🎉
SO excited for this course!
I love this Jay.
Wait so multimedia, literally means multiple multiple medium?
It's a transportation system that allows for delivery of different types of media *at the same time* - For example - CD-ROM was multimedia because one storage system could carry Audio, Video, and Data at the same time.
Joshua Walker that’s a long way of saying “yes” lol
Multimedia = multiple media = multiple mediums. "Media" is just the correct Latinate way of pluralizing "medium", rather than Anglicizing it to "mediums". (In general, any word ending in "-ums" is an incorrect, Anglicized pluralization of a Latin word).
Pfhorrest so using simply math, your equations equate to
Multiple multiple media, (or multiple squared media, whichever you feel is most simplified)
No, you don't need to repeat "multiple". You can have one medium, or multiple "mediums", which is more correctly put as multiple media, because "mediums" is a weird mutant word. "Multimedia" is just short for multiple media.
Aaand the best named Crash Course presenter award goes toooooo... Jaaaay Smooooth!
Crash course always pleasantly suprising me.
I'm trying to teach my coworkers about how to obtain media literacy
This is going to be interesting! Awesome
I’m excited for this crash course!
Oh boy, I'm so excited! I'm glad this topic is being covered! I hope it won't be too US-centric :o
Thanks for the vid! Very clear and definitely learnt some new tips.
Yes and many more x yes. This! Thank you. Coherence will follow shortly :)
Very skeptical of this first episode, but... BUT!! This video was both entertaining and informative. Can’t wait till the next episode!
Great Explanations... I truly liked this...
I am going to use this in my intro critical thinking courses. Thanks!
PREACH CRASHCOURSE! stoked
Coupon and receipts are media....
You learn something new every day.
I like his voice
