  • I get lots of questions and comments about the Mirena Coil or IUD. Some providers recommend them in cases of vaginal bleeding. This video explains the pros and cons.
Should you take HRT (and not something like Mirena) for menopause? If that question feels impossible to answer, I'm here to help. My digital course, The Menopause Solution, guides you through Searches, Stories, and Studies to help you make your HRT decision.

It was the most agonising thing and I was severely sick using this for a year. Check out the side effects before trying it.

Thank you for this video! I am a 55 year old menopausal woman on HRT. I had the Mirena inserted 4 years ago (and yes - it was VERY painful 😓) to keep my uterine lining nice and thin.
The problem now though is that because I don't take oral Prometrium (micronized progesterone), my sleep is really bad. I wake up at 3:00 am every day and stay awake for several hours. I am exhausted every day. I asked my doctor if I could take Prometrium for sleep, and she said no - I can't have both IUD and take progesterone.
I am convinced that my hormones are out of balance and so that is why I have such chronic insomnia. Not sure what to do - have the IUD removed early so I can take oral progesterone, or not.
Thank you for your channel! I really appreciate how much work you put into them, and the valuable content! This is my first time commenting, but I have watched almost all of your videos!
    Cheers from Canada!!

@larajohnson8174 So sorry to hear about your sleep issue. That's one of the biggest drawbacks for the Mirena IUD. Progesterone is definitely important for exactly that reason. It upsets me to hear well-meaning doctors refer to Mirena as "a progesterone IUD." It's not progesterone at all. Your doctor's hesitance to give you both progesterone and Mirena is not uncommon.

That is sad the way insurance and western doctors see it. Progesterone does a lot for me. Its a muscle relaxer and really has helped my back and all over pain, it acts in my body to prevent vasoconstriction ( inhibiting agonist-induced vasoconstriction.) which reduces my migraines a lot, it helps me sleeep! Which is huge. Progesterone may increase muscle protein synthesis rate...we really do not know all the functions it serves in the body.

P.S. dont give up. Figure out a way to get what you need. Go to one of the doctors on Steves list here perhaps and see if you can get what you need.

I have been on Mirena for 15 months for HRT. Does Mirena IUD cause abnormal TSH? I have NEVER had high TSH level but 4 months after I started Mirena, my TSH got high.

I am 46 years and using Mirena for birth control. My question is about taking estrogen. Would that make Mirena less effective as birth control?
Not in menopause yet, but have been estrogen dominant for years. Dr said I shouldn't need to take progesterone with Mirena. The months before switching to Mirena from paragard, my symptoms had been changing and I feel I may need estrogen soon. I don't have access to a hormone specialist right now. Just Want some information about how Mirena interacts with estrogen. Would I need different birth control method if I end up needing to supplement with estrogen?

@alivoisin3739 Estrogen shouldn't make Mirena less effective for birth control.
