- Hoaka Delos Reyes is the last of his kind. The master stone carver has practiced his craft, one that holds deep significance in Hawaiian culture, for 40 years. His process utilizes the technique and tools of his ancestors, requiring patience, endurance and prayer. Travel to the glorious island of Maui and spend time with an artist who is constantly learning from the natural world around him.
These stones are considered sacred in Hawaiian culture. When visiting, please be careful not to move or remove rocks.

Glad this Hawaiian master is preserving history.
I think you are on top comments on two videos about Hawaii this and the hawaii fisherman
@@vanyasingh8695 I love that man making stone art I mean I should be thankful he’s a life not very many men have that talent
Mad respect for him. Hawaii has lost many of its traditions and it's nice to see this.
Born and raised hawaiian here. Thank you for sharing our culture with others. Aloha
the quality of the cinematography is just unreal. Also I feel lile I really connect to this story for some reason! Great video, great man
Pretty badass tattoo
So much cultural passion with the Hawaiians, I love it ❤️🙏🏽
Woah this is chillingly amazing
he should be wearing a respirator, silica dust is toxic af
True but somehow he's been doing it for more than 40 years..?!
Seriously. Or at least dampen it.
Some dampen it to make it easier to chip
or just don't breathe it in??

>Talks about ancient neolithic methods
>Busts out an angle grinder
Crushenator500 He never said anything about not using modern methods, too. He uses BOTH.
hahaha
Always a jerkoff in the comment section.
He probably isn’t able to physically make work with the rock like how machines do so please don’t judge him.
Great to see a master carver from Hawaii with 100 percent humble an respect for the old ways aloha brother!!
*Watching from the Philippines*
_Would you consider him to be a... stoner?_
How do you accomplish to do this? Be in every comment
I’d say his favorite genre of music is probably... rock...
Oh mahalo nui loa, I needed this today. Aloha. Please teach to keiki
Never forget the way
Respect for your mana'o.
*So this is how Squidward's house was made*
Is your job just to make comment??

Pineapples 🍍 are not native to Hawaii actually there a bromeliad from South America so no pineapple 🍍 and sponge bob has nothing to do with Hawai’i . Not clever not smart or funny
@@JuanLopez-tp7hj woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh

With all the videos of primitive tech and flint knapping lets just hope this becomes popular too
Everything he said i can apply to life..very inspiring
“It’s either give it your best or you don’t do it at all” something he said in this too. It’s very inspiring what he gave us in this id love to learn what he does since I love being outdoors and working in wilderness. But I have no money to buy the tools he’s got
if u come hawaii dont steal the lava rocks , youll get bad luck until you return them
Kaili Opala that too dont steal anything from hawaii period fckin hoales 😂
if you buy a sculpture made by hawaiian stone, do you think it still applies? 🤔
@@dial0foroperator it works though. haoles return rocks and sand every year
We need to be thankfull for people like him and they should know its okay to say your'e welcome
Anybody realize he is missing a finger? 😐
Miguel LaChica and?
He is a former yakuza so he sacrifice his finger
Yaaa
Was a pleasure meeting you briefly at Hookipa today! Do you have anyone whom you are teaching these traditions to?
Beautiful work. I love your culture

Anyone know if he is still working?
This kid at my school’s last name is Carver
Check My Playlist been a while since I’ve seen you
I wonder if he can also make a moai even though they are from RapaNui. I want to learn that myself.
Does he have an online store. I need a poi pounder.
What song was the guy singing?
How can I become his apprentice? Awesome work!
Stone is everything
Very Polynesian-esque style of stone carving...
How’d he loose his fringer?

*I remeber my ancestors used power sanders in neolithic times too...*
Mine, too! 👍👍😂😂
I like stones
Howd he lose a finger?
Mr Teepawt probs the stoning
Mr Teepawt he cut it on a guitar string when he was playing rock music
He put his finger in....
When he was seeking the heart of island
Remember what he said? The stone shaped him.
2:16 ... right index finger?
why do these videos always show an ancient craft disappearing often with the master saying "I am the last of the ..." but they never have any apprentices... seems kinda dumb to me
Probably because it's not exactly something everyone wants to do. I'm sure it would be even harder to find another Hawaiian that wants to do it.
@@kendallbergstrom yeah but I never see them try and find one either, and I'm sure there's plenty, just like with sumo in japan, go to a village, show what you do, let some kids do it too and see who likes it
They always say this younger generation is not interested.
@AMERICAN NACIREMA damn, that made me really sad because I realise it's true, and it's not just america either... let's hope cultural identity claims a top spot again over all this "we're all the same" stuff
always remember bois..
you dont shape the stone
the stone shapes you
Where on Maui because I live on maui
That one place, behind the trees.
This video is weirdly appealing
Maui nō ka ‘oi
_Can this guy create a stone mask that gets activated with blood?_
Ok
spirit stone
Man is ready for battle
I thought it was illegal to take rocks etc. from the beaches??? Where I live you can't even take drift wood or you can get a fine.
Tracy Brooks idk, he probably has a license or something
That is so ignorant... take a rock, shell or piece of drift wood and pay for your sin.
But can the mask turn you into a vampire?
Is that a JoJo reference???
Really a jojo reference
I REJECT MY HUMANITY JOJO!
R/unexpectedjojo
Did he say handsestor
Hi
When you install the chisel mod...
It's either you give it your best, or don't do it at all.
