I work for a company that helps people come off of medications. We have known for more than ten years that a Benzo withdrawal was comparable or even worse than a heroin withdrawal. If you quit cold turkey you may go into shock and cardiac arrest. One of the saddest client experiences was when a mother and her 8 year old came to us. His school counsellor mentioned that he was having problems with his attention and he seemed anxious in class. The boy was prescribed 3 different medications and two, TWO were benzos. Turns out that he wasn't sleeping well because he was being bullied by some older boys and he was fearful of recess and lunch because that's where they would corner him and that's all he could think about. This child had to go through the withdrawals that an adult should never have to experience, because some school counsellor thought that he needed drugs instead of looking for the root cause of the anxiety in the first place. What a world.

To those who don't know, he developed a physical addiction to the benzodiazepines that he was prescribed by his doctor for anxiety. It tragically happens to millions of people around the world all the time. Now cynical people with an axe to grind say he's a junkie because he's in recovery, but the fact that he's taking control of his situation is, in my opinion, a demonstration that he is following his own advice. A "clean room" is a process, not an event.

I was so frightened of moving in the night it snapping piercing my lung and me dying in my own blood because I have no partner. So I've been battering them for a month and valour. Weirdly for what are proposed to be muscle relaxants a weird side effect was the removal of my abject fear (crying, I've only ever cried when my dog died but I was genuinely so scared I couldn't control my emotion). My question is "how long does it take to form a proper dependency on them?" I've completely stopped now. So scared I hired an escort to stay over next day it was "this is like a holiday for me, I have my own room with projector etc and you want nothing but my company, I'll half the price I'm even gonna have a deep clean for you". I'm thinking great. Anyway, she was just looking what I had and where, I woke up went into her room with a coffee she's not their but around £4000 of assets are stolen. She robbed me. Is it possible that in 2017 when I gradually came down with CHF and hadn't slept in weeks because of huge anxiety that I might suffocate if I didn't stay propped up, and my nurse had mercy on me & gave me 1 tablet of something for anxiety that made me feel so wonderful I finally slept right through the night, and then, the next day, when I asked him what it was, so I'd know something that worked in case I ever experienced anxiety like that again, he refused to tell me what the medication was, even when I pleaded, just so I'd know what worked in that case. Well of course you experienced a severe withdrawal syndrome, but this is not due to benzodiazepine , but due to your reckless decision-making. You built a 40+ year long dependence. Here, when I speak of dependence, I primarily mean in a psychological sense. You could not function properly without your medication, and it was your primary support system. Over time, of course, due to the nature of the human organism, this extended into the biological realm and your body adapted to this new neurochemical environment you-ve created. This also has nothing to do with benzos or any other medication : biological adaptation happens all the time at all levels of the human being (it-s an evolutionary mechanism for survival). For whatever reason, you decided to quit this medication, which has sustained you for the past 40 years. Then, just pay close attention to what you wrote in your comment: "I started a looong, slow, home detox, thought I was out of the woods until 2 weeks after quitting completely." So you attempted to cure a 40 year dependence with a HOME DETOX (this stinks of pseudoscientific garbage) , decided to quit essentially cold turkey (relative to the length of your dependence), and now think that what happened afterwards with you is a consequence of taking benzos? This kind of thinking is so flawed and dangerous: it reminds me of Germany thinking it can quit its dependence on Russian energy (which it sustained for decades) overnight, just because someone said so. You/ve made a huge mistake and ofc its easier to blame the medicine than to take personal accountability. These are my thoughts on this issue.

@@stanislavknezevic6684 awfully detailed response for someone who isn’t considering that this person developed a chemical dependence while their brain was literally still developing. You also aren’t looking at this person’s psychology or personal circumstance. How can you expect a developing child to know better than to abstain from a very powerful mind altering substance given to them at the hands of their own caregiver? You’re disregarding way too many factors in your argument for it to be even close to the full picture. What did you hope to accomplish by telling this person about what you perceive as solely their own mistake? Besides, they went through hell and came out the other end five years ago- no small feat. Many people don’t make it through what this person is describing. I didn’t take the medication for that many years but I did take it for 10 and the psychotic symptoms are very real. Consider the why this person was taking that medicine in the first place. Not everyone takes them, no? Something deeper is always going on with that individual that they need to literally turn the volume down on every part of their life to be able to tolerate it.

I found this video at the perfect time. My partner was addicted to benzos i guess worst than i even expected. He told me he stopped but now i see it’s not that easy. We went on vacation and not having any he went into withdrawal and psychosis. The craziest scariest thing i even witnessed in my life. The crazy outburst, the paranoia, the delusions, no sleep, he thought people were going to “k!ll him”, he was seeing things not there, he literally called the cops on himself on vacation! We were in the hospital on an island, he kept saying his stomach hurts which now i see is a symptom. I just thought maybe he took drugs and was dealing with paranoia and it will go away. It didn’t he was shaking, no appetite and the list goes on. I was so scared and couldn’t want to get back home! The plane ride was the worse! He thought everyone on the plane was after him, he kept telling me he had a “b0mb” on his foot, a lady was taking out an AirPod and he kept telling me “she’s shotting up! Look at her taking out the needle!”. I was so confused and over it. Now seeing how bad it can be i have sympathy. He was checked into the hospital ICU that’s how bad it was when they explained what the withdrawal symptoms can do. i say all this to say that sometimes we can make things about us because the whole time i argued with him for ruining MY trip, telling him i can’t wait to go home and leave him. And while yes, i do feel this way, i now understood what’s happening and it breaks my heart knowing what he was going thru. He didn’t mean to do these things or “ruin” the trip. I never knew benzos were this bad and i wish it was educated more so people would know the harm or signs to spot.

Benzodiazepines, a devil pill, one that nearly took my life. The Dr’s kept pushing this as treatment as they thought my medical issues where all in my head. When in reality I had a rare neuromuscular disease along with ovarian tumors. By the time I had proper diagnosis my body was dependent on alprazolam. I was crawling on the floor in my kitchen one morning in a psychosis state from tolerance withdrawal. I had no idea what was going on, it hit me out of nowhere. I then found out what tolerance was and I was going in and out of withdrawal ON the benzo. My Dr was no help and wanted to up my dose and I knew if I didnt get off I would die. I researched online and found someone who lead me to the harms of the medication and proper tapering off and I mean strict tapering method and is approached by small percentage reductions to help the body adjust. It was torturous hell, like nothing remotely comes close to it, you wish you would die. The symptoms of withdrawal are on a level almost intolerable to what any human should have to endure and it takes sometimes years to recover to a point of living a life with any quality. There are thousands and thousands of people that are going through this, with little to no help and have to stumble upon help from ones that have been through it. Informed consent needs to be given to EVERYONE that is prescribed this and should never be given more then 2 weeks.

My dad was prescribed benzos for YEARS after having panic attacks. When he retired he decided he no longer needed the medication. He told his Dr he was just going to quit taking them. Dr. said "you can't. It could kill you". It took years for him to get normal. The weaning process was terrible. I watched a fit, alcohol & tobacco free man in his late 50s become a shell of his former self. My dad is 6'2" & normally around 210-20 lbs. During the prolonged weaning & withdrawal stages he dipped as low as 165lbs. He didn't sleep properly for years. He said even his hair hurt. Seriously, I bet it was over 2 if not closer to 3 years of withdrawal. Worst part was my dad took them as prescribed & nearly everywhere he went for help he was treated as an addict. "How long have you been abusing your medication?".

I woke up after a decade of alcohol abuse, and after years battling with any semblance of sobriety, years of destroyed relationships, health and legal issues, I couldn’t do it anymore. I didn’t even recognize myself anymore. I shaved my head and said it was over. (For the trillionth time).
I just knew there wasn’t anymore “breaks” from it. I was down so bad, I knew I couldn’t survive if I ever went back. Like looking out over the ocean from the banister of a boat out at sea. One slip and you’re gone.
It took me years of education, outpatient, AA and relationships with people who were addicted, to overcome this codependency that was ultimately masking my problems. When it comes up, i openly admit that I’m an alcoholic, it is not a unique struggle, as well as any addiction.
I never could picture a happy life without alcohol. But with it approaching 2 years on April 21st, I have had the best year and a half of my life. I’m sharing this because I want this peace for everyone battling with their addictions. So much time is burned up in alcohol and drug abuse. You finally have time to address your issues piece by piece, and finally invest in yourself. So grateful for the life I have today, and that all came from my past self, taking it day by day, for my future self.

FINALLY, People are talking about how NASTY and EVIL Benzodiazepines are. I fell in love with those at a young age due to how much they helped with my anxiety, depression and stress. These things seemed like a life saver at the time. But they quickly stop working and then leave you struggling for YEARS to get off of them. Now I am trying to maintain sobriety from benzos..
I am finally 6 months sober and I am seeing a new way to live life. Still struggling with severe rebound anxiety but it is getting better day by day. It’s just one day at a time, you can get sober! Thanks Jordan Peterson for talking about this.

So glad he is slowly coming around to getting saved by Christ. his wife truly knows The Lord, he has always been too intellectual though and logic can get in the way of “faith” God wants us to believe without seeing , and then He will show us things we cannot even imagine and Him showing up in our life, thankfully He is still at work and does so even when we don’t realize it and aren’t believing !! He knows exactly how to get our hearts back to Him. ❤️🙏🏻🙌🏻

@Russell's Brand faith isn’t logical 😉 that is why it is called “faith” how did any miracles occur in the bible, and still do today, faith is the clay so to speak God uses to mold miracles. He reacts to faith. Can you logically explain a super natural healing? The process of it, no just simply God does it , and is pure love and all powerful, it is sort of like Job thinking he had wisdom as a human… and God came to Him, chapters 38-41 challenging Job , ok if you think you know “anything” answer me this then, and they were questions NO human being can actually answer , because God is the creator of ALL ❤️

Got high for like a week and was so absolutely terrified of that seizure that I was scared even a week of me taking it and then stopping would give me another seizure,, even though I prob would've been fine and the rest is history. Now he's on meth. He's a shadow of his former self. He's a skeleton. He OD'd a couple months ago but survived. The military has paid for his rehab several times before, but what I never understood is they will wean him off everything but the benzos. He stays clean a few months except for the Xanax then he starts the same cycle all over again. It's heartbreaking to watch someone you love destroy themselves, and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

@@riaagarwal6840 it can help but it all starts in the mind. That's what's f***** up about the benzos is that they mess with the mind's chemistry. Most can never get to that place where you want to be a better healthier person. It seems impossible.
I've never gotten into them but I have been addicted to opiates. They made me energized and I could think clearly on them so when it came to getting off of them, it was hard but easy. Hard in the sense that fentanyl is the worst drug I've ever come off but easy in the sense that my mind was clear enough I could make the decision. Oh and also I didn't die going cold turkey (DONT RECOMMEND IT)
My girlfriend had a thyroid issue that cranked her bodies metabolism way up. They scheduled radioactive therapy so that her thyroid would go back to normal and regulate her body normally. In the 3-month window waiting for the procedure they prescribed her benzos to slow her down. A woman with the strongest mind of any human being I've ever met was becoming addicted. The funny thing is she came to me and said something. She could feel herself slipping down a hole she KNEW she could never climb out of. I knew it was a cry for help. I pulled that pill bottle back from her and slowly weaned her off with what she had. The dose she was prescribed was turning her into a zombie. After doing research and learning that alcohol and benzos are typically the only things that kill people on withdrawals, I was scared s***less.
We used MJ as a replacement but don't think for a minute it could save someone who's in the depth of despair and been taking them for years. You literally need medical intervention.

I had my own room, but on both sides of the room I shared walls with one guy in his 30's coming off of benzos on one end and the other an older gentleman coming off opiods. 4 out of 7 nights I stayed awake, listening to what I can only describe as pure agony, screaming, crying, begging, praying, wishing for death etc, until, eventually, they'd either pass out or just go shower and go on about the day as if nothing happened. I pray they found that strength, the younger guy was a great guitarist and the older guy was genuinely kind and taught me some things. Anyone who knows the struggle my heart is with you. Klonopin while causing dependence has made bad situations bearable though. But I regret building a multi year dependence. I stopped cold turkey and it was the hardest thing I've done in my life, everyone talks about the emotional and mental difficulty of the withdrawals but the physical part is rarely addressed, fever, nausea, headache, dizziness, vertigo, shortness of breath, heartache and elevated heart palpitation rate I swear for about a week it felt like my brain was failing to control parts of my body, mainly hands and legs I literally had difficulty walking, I couldn't perform my job because I couldn't type on the computer also. I've had a few relapses but it only made the recovering more difficult so I'm 3 months clean now. I think I've said too much but anyway, this is my story that nobody actually knows about but me, THE FIGHT CONTINUES BUT VICTORY IS CERTAIN.

Being a person who has suffered first hand from PTSD and anxiety. I can totally relate to Jordan not being able to sleep. When you are going through an anxiety attack, you may wake up many times throughout the night in a puddle of sweat. Or you simply just can't sleep. Because your mind is racing. At first you totally don't understand what's going on with you. There were times I had to just go for a drive. Whether it was during the day, or the middle of the night. Because it helped ease my mind. Once you start to manage it better, it gets easier. But sometimes you're overwhelmed to the point to where you just aren't thinking clearly and you try to look for an escape. That escape could be drinking, or drugs. Or it could be what I used to do and go to various parks to hike, going to a school track to run, or simply going for a drive to try to calm down. Hats off to those who suffered the same way. I understand completely how you feel. At times you just want to live like it's your last day on earth. Because you feel so awful and miserable and like it could really be your last day on earth. Just keep moving forward, even if it's a crawl. When you look back, you'll be proud about how far you have came and what you overcame while having to suffer so much and it not defeating you. I'll take physical pain over mental pain any day. Those who know what I'm talking about would more than likely tell you the same.

If you haven’t had to come off of Xanax, it’s really hard to put into perspective how painful it is. I started using Xanax and Vicodin around the age of 20 and it was the first time in my life I felt like I could take a deep breath. It was the first time I was happy with who I was but I didn’t realize I was only hurting myself. I was the definition of functioning addict. I do high voltage electrical work and I had days i took on the upward end of 5-7 bars a day and I would run laps around other people at work. And because I would preform better at work I didn’t see an issue with it. I never took them to get fucked up. I just wanted to feel normal without anybody knowing what I was up to.. It was my little secret. But once that script ran out I went into full on withdrawals and had 3 seizures over the course of 1.5 years. One time I fell off an 8 foot ladder onto my head. I’m 23 now and clean off the Xanax. But because of those decisions I made I lost the one girl who meant the most to me because the drugs made me blind to what was important. Good to see Dr. Peterson back to good health and fitness again.
I've been taking a prescribed benzodiazepine for three weeks - I knew it had teeth to it but hadn't heard about the problems of long term use.
Sleep deprivation on a regular basis is a truly terrible state to experience.
    So too is anxiety.
I'm not sure humans were meant to enjoy life and prosper - that may be a false bubble world which can get so real it then seems as if it's a default state.
But there will be and are moments and times to appreciate and enjoy and saviour - we tend to take those times for granted, though.
Humanity was born to suffer but survive - it's not supposed to be easy and enjoyable - it's supposed to hurt.
That's my two cents worth, what do I know anyway ?

You should be able to taper off the benzos relatively easy and you could take any of these anti-depressants; remeron, elavil, trazadone, serquel, by themselves to sleep soundly.
I've been through hell and back with benzos & sleeping pills like Halcion, Lunesta, Ambien, Valium, Klonopin, Xanax, and after 25 years, i'm finally free from all of these drugs and i sleep 7 hours and feel great in the morning. Benzos are harder than opiates to get off of because of the brutal rebound insomnia, in which i had to take off 2 years of work because i had trouble sleeping more than 2 hours per night. The longer that you take benzos the harder it will be to taper off of them.

The experience I had from quitting benzos cold turkey rivaled the psychedelic experiences I've had, actually blown most of them out of the water because I didn't know when it would stop and my sense of reality went away in the sense of knowing where I was at and who I was around, the delirium brought on by sleep depravation really exacerbated things. Not to mention what I think are permanent changes.

I will say you have detoxed from benzos. Yes, I've taken LSD in higj school and it was a very pleasant break with reality. The benzo cold turkey was ever bit of dantes inferno and a morgue and a raw sewage tank stirred into the absolutely worst most fucking intense negative hell I cannot even explain to others it was so bad. All I know is that I am not strong enough mentally to ever endure even one fifth of my benzo detox again. They say some never come back to full sanity. I can see this, I am not even close to who I was before, my psychic energy was all burnt afterwards. I am typing this to you because I've never heard anyone else explain as well what I endured as you have in your comment. Stay off of them buddy. My torture was so bad I cursed a general practice Dr. last year who offered me a script of xanax " since I complained of anxiety due to being forced off work during Covid and my friends seemed to be dying from Covid". I apologized but I told him my story and I also told him if he actually deserved that diploma I pointed to on his wall that he would never ever start a person on those damned things unless they are dying of cancer very soon. Anything other than terminal cancer anxiety and benzos scripts are the most common form of medical malpractice committed in the western world

Glad they’re scratching the surface but wish the information was more accurate. Benzo‘s have been available since the 50s and have been handed out like TicTac‘s for the better part of 40 years.. To say that we are just now learning the dangers of these medications isn’t true as Heather Ashton wrote the Bible on benzodiazepines and successfully dealt with the epidemics problem in the UK before it was a widespread problem in the US mid 80’s. They cause long-term CNS and GABA injury which is something the manufacturers at Roche and other pharmaceutical manufacturers have shown internal documents from the 70s… That’s why they’re only recommended to be taken for a few weeks at most. Also need to differentiate between chemical dependency and addiction as the DSM does. Lots of people people saying he was “addicted” and calling him an addict. He was prescribed the medication for sleep and became chemically dependent, he didn’t seek it out as a means to escape or cope with life pain, big difference.

I get what your trying to say but please stay in your lane, Opiates are soft compared to Benzodiazepines in every single way.. You know your own darkness which hey I congratulate you for making it through but benzodiazepines is in another league. There's 5 categories which makes benzos way worse.
      1) Duration of recovery: With Opiates withdrawal is over in 2 weeks to a month on average... That's cute. The average length of benzo recovery is between 9-18 months with symptoms... I'll say that again, with symptoms for up to 18 months. Don't worry it gets worse, 10-15% develop Protracted withdrawal which can last up to 10 years with symptoms that keeps changing... I'm currently on year 7 with 212 symptoms documented... Trust me
      opiate withdrawal would be heaven.
      2) Symptoms The symptoms of opiate withdrawal are flue like, Hot/cold, poor cognitive ability, nasty sweats, increased anxiety, fatigue, muscle and joint paint... That's cute. With Benzodiazepines Prof Heather Ashton documented 90+, can you imagine 90+ symptoms from muscle symptoms, neurological symptoms such as losing the ability to walk, speak or think? Cognitive abilities are just gone... Most forget their age, visual and perceptional issues... Can you imagine losing eye sight for a large portion of the day only to live in fear of losing your eye sight for good? Akathisia or the suicide disease to insomnia for months only living on micro sleep? Trust me Opiate withdrawal is nothing compared to benzos.
      3) lack of medical awareness: With opiates you have rehab or detox services along with a medical community that understands you... Guess what we have? Nothing, Benzodiazepines was created by Leo H Sternbach in 1955,brought to the market in 1960...since then there's only one study that's it, the medical community doesn't recognize benzo withdrawal we only have support from online groups. I want you to think about... You've been taught your whole life that doctors can help you but what happens when you're having weird symptoms no test can show? And this community of medical experts not only dismisses your cries, but calls you crazy, calls you a trouble maker and pushes you on other doctors making you feel worse. And when you do listen to them and detox the way they've been taught, you get worse as tapering needs to be as long as 3 years but most medical professionals try getting you off the benzo in a month as every other drug works the same so why not benzos right
4)loss of hope: Try being bedbound for years... You will lose hope I don't care who you are it all sinks in how helpless you've become. We lost 24 people in our community last month
      5) Loss:besides loss of life, if you're disabled for as long as we are, you lose family, friends, relationships, job and financial situation the list goes on and on
Again I get what your saying but you're darkness compared to ours isn't in the same park, the worst thing that can happen to a opiate addict is loss of life which I'm not down playing how awful that is because it is, lose of life should never happen but the worst thing that could happen to benzo users mind you according to Benzodiazepine information coalition 98% used their medication as prescribed and were hurt, but the worst thing that can happen to us is no longer being able to live a life, we become disabled trapped in a body that's falling apart and no one can help. Please don't comment on things you don't understand.

When we got there, I told her "Holy crap, I love this shit". Made me very mellow. I can see how and why people get addicted to it. Glad I only had the one.

It's like all the upsides of alcohol with none of the downsides... at least in the short term you don't get a hangover and feel ill the next day like alcohol and it doesn't attack your immune system like alcohol. If used responsibly they probably are healthier than alcohol. But lord knows how impossible it is to use those responsibly.

It's not about addiction. It's about dependency. Most people are harmed taking as prescribed.
