I played trumpet in the pit orchestra of a community theater production of ‘Promises, Promises’ in 1974. This brought back a lot of memories. I played those songs many times during that February run.
I thought Sean Hayes did a remarkable job in this show. I enjoyed him and it tremendously. Hats off!!!!! And Ms. Chenoweth was marvelous. The whole company was sensational. Great 2.5 hours in the theater. Thanks to all and Burt Bacharach!!!!
It was my very first Broadway musical. My friend went to see "Hair" while I saw this. I was never really hip. The main thing I remember about the preview was THAT tall girl in the red dress. It has been declared by those who know best that "Turkey Lurkey" is the most difficult dance ever staged on Broadway. Donna was it's STAR. Michael was her mentor. Her biggest devotee. In her shoes, he was putty. Donna later got an acting Tony for playing herself, the BEST chorus girl in Broadway history. In retrospect for me, the show Promises should have been billed as "Finest Hour: the Jill O'Hara Story" featuring Donna McKechnie. Did it ever get better. Jill should have been as big as Barbara Cooke. Every show dancer in town sure wanted to be as big as Donna McKechnie. Thanks, ladies. For Donna, I have indelible memories. For Jill, I have incredible songs.
I think I am more impressed with the cast's energy and abilities than the songs and the storyline of the play. They are astonishingly talented in every way. I do wonder how a song like Turkey Lurkey Time made it into a musical that includes masterpieces like "Knowing when to leave", "Promises Promises" and "I say a little prayer".
I’m an old sod, so perhaps a bit biased. I saw the original production on a cold, raw, sleety evening, the week before Christmas. From the looks of this video, it doesn’t remotely do justice to the original. Michael Bennett staged the numbers, Donna McKechnie was still a relative unknown. Scope CZcams for the original “Turkey Lurkey Time.” The colors are a bit faded, but it’s classic Bacharach. I’m in my arthritic 70s, but it still gets me up and moving, bumping and grinding like is was 20 again. Trumpet and percussion both get A++. Good times.
It was good to see a Broadway revival of this 1968 gem, but it was not a patch on the original, and whose decision was it to add three Burt Bacharach pop songs that weren't written for the original production? Big mistake.
Promises Promises was my first Broadway musical in 1971 at the Music Center in Los Angeles 😊

Love Burt Bacharach and his score.

How backwards. It's a great show, and I Say A Little Prayer was not in it.
Turkey Lurkey is silly, but holy cow, watching them perform this live was so exciting! Desperately wanted to join in the dance! :)
The original choreographer was Michael Bennett. He could elevate any ordinary number, and make it a highlight.
The 69 version looks a whole lot better then this especially the Turkey Lurky number.

LOVE THIS VIDEO. LOVE THE MUSIC. THIS IS WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC. NOT LIKE THE CRAP TODAY!
I should have seen this show on Broadway.
Me too😢
Me too. What was I thinking ?
This was my first Broadway show I saw

I saw this ! It was great ❤
So musica linda
Love the score as always, but give me the original Bennett choreography. This version of "Turkey Lurkey Time" just doesn't hold up to the original.
Sean was better than I expected, but Jerry Orbach was better.
I disagree Sean has an Innocence about him.
Jerry was great & had a strong voice. RIP
But, was Ice Cold in the original production.
Does ANYBODY know where i can watch this?
literally im here searching for it...did you ever find it?
@@sillychili3482 no! Unfortunately not 😢
North Hollywood has a production this month (dec 2022) going into January
Broadway boys and girls have the strangest sounding voices. They sound like slightly advanced high schoolers.
Sounds like you don’t know anything about Broadway.
Who, thought, he could actually, sing?
Why does Chenoweth look so prematurely old?
Her jaw and forehead. I guess it's something there
I am not a big fan of hers. That squeeky singing and talking voice hurts my ears. I do love Sean though.
