  • Hello, my friends!
    I received a lot of questions about Peltier modules, especially about the TEC1-12706 type, which is actually the least efficient.
    But which is the best one? In this episode I will test a few Peltier modules to find out.
    A big THANK YOU to all my patrons, especially to: Max Rice, techge and Anthony Ortenzi.

    What you're seeing is the effect of joule heating. Basically you were able to manage the hot side of smaller peltiers better because heatsinks were larger in proportion.
    06 is not rubbish. It has to be planned & executed properly.

      Thank you - it would have been nice to see how warm the large heat sync was getting. Liquid cooling would have significantly improved this test.

      @@RCToys09 I guess there's a reason why the manufacturer make different types with different price or costing. I bet it not only related with size but also with quality. Using liquid cooling required more electricity as input. So if using same input give different output then we can conclude which is more efficient.

    Please do another video like this one, but in the next video, apply heat & determine which module produces the most electrical power when you use the optimal heating for each module design. From what I see online, the TEC1-12706 can produce 57W at 50C, which is 1.425W/mm2. That means ~702 of the TEGs could produce 1 kW of power with an input heat of 50C

    crazy and almost magical technology I was unaware of until lately. I would be curious about this same experiment with numbers on the heat side also

  • @RCToys09
    @RCToys09 Před rokem +1

    Repeat the test and track the temp of the large heat sync. You will find that the large heat sync can't keep up with the heat generated by the larger peltier, and it will be hotter with the 12705 than with the 12703. This explains why the temp was greater at 60 minutes than at 30 minutes - the ambient temp of the heat sync rose. A peltier is designed to create a thermal difference between the hot and cold side of the peltier. The colder the hot side is, the colder the cold side will be. For air cooling, the 12703 is better. With liquid cooling, the 12705 will remove more heat than the 12703.

    • @Schrimpieman
      @Schrimpieman Před rokem +3

      Quite similar as to what I was thinking. Smallest-size peltier (12704) performed "best" compared to the group because of its smallest physical size in proportion to the (heat) radiator. Increasing the cooling capacity (ie: Larger radiator or more fan cooling) in proportion to wattage output needs to be considered to make a fair comparison.

    The modules have different electrical specs and they're being driven with a fixed voltage, the ideal way of driving a peltier module is using a constant current (CC), as resistance varies with temperature. Idealy the module should be driven within 60-70% of its maximum current to maximize lifespan. The last digit of the modules indicates their maximum current. The TEC1-12703 has a maximum current of 3A and is being driven a little above its maximum current. So, this module is being overdriven.
    My suggestion would be to compare them using CC at the same percentage of the maximum current of the module being tested.

    Great video, but I have Concerns.
    Later on, you chose the TEC-12703 because it cools down to the lowest temperature. In the mini-fridge you've build, the Amount of heat the Peltier has to remove is much higher, and the Qc of the 12703 is very low. Dont you think the 12706 does a better job when the amount of heat that has to be removed is quite high?

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks! TEC1-12706 may be a little better in a closed box, but it draws more current and it needs a bigger heatsink, so the entire cooler will be bigger, more expensive and will draw more energy.

    Nice video and analysis. Could you please suggest best PELTIER module for heating application? Thanks in advance

      Hi. I haven't tested Peltier modules in heating applications, maybe in a future video.

    • @greggv8
      @greggv8 Před 3 měsíci

      Least efficient at cooling would likely be best for heating. Peltiers move heat from one side to the other but in doing so they convert a lot of the input electricity to heat which goes out the hot side. In other words they put a lot more energy out the hot side than they take in the cold side.

    I'd like to ask if it's practical to make and use a portable air condition using the 3 amps Peltier module in hot countries like here in the Philippines? and how many modules would it need to make it efficient to cool down a small area or room? I'm just curious.... Thanks for this video....

      @321tryagain Před rokem +1

      No, peltier devices are not very efficient for cooling and a power output of 1000w is suitable for a medium size room, so at least 20 of these.

      @@321tryagain Far more if you want to operate at a reasonable COP and at that point you'd have a very expensive and weak AC system (assuming you actually take care to pump the heat outside)

    hi can i get around 0 centigrade in 40°c weather with 4×4cm heat sink and 12706 peltier? i want to build a phone cooler but the peltier gets too warm

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  Před 10 měsíci

      no. you need 1 or maybe 2 peltier modules 12703 with a big heatsink.

      @@Sorin_DIY but the main thing is building a phone cooler it can't be that big

      then you can power it with a lower voltage. because a 12706 peltier module with a small heatsink will get very hot.

  • @sashilemtur6647
    @sashilemtur6647 Před rokem +1

    i think you need to supply 12v 6amps for the 12706 module, for its full load to work.

    • @paradiselost9946
      @paradiselost9946 Před 9 měsíci

      it wont draw 6 amps at 12v, it needs 14v or higher.
