    Bad advice: please do not ask me for a letter of recommendation 10 days before a Dec. 1 deadline and expect me to be able to pull it off. Set yourself and your recommenders up for success by applying early. Meet with us to discuss where you are applying, why you are applying to these schools, share your draft essay, and give us a month on letter requests. We are busy people and students don’t realize it but many of you ask the same groups of us to write letters. Many deadlines fall in the same timeframe around the holidays and finals so be considerate.

      I completely agree! I must have not made myself clear in this video - I made meetings with my professors in September as soon as the quarter started to ask them to write my letters. I shared my transcripts, SOP, and CV. It was them who said don't sent them the links until closer to the deadline! But I completely agree, asking someone to write a letter of rec last minute is not going to end well

      That,s the reason,in my country we encourage students to take hard copies of LORs ,scan them and send to universities themselves.

      Thank you. I about had a heart attack because I already asked for them. I finished online but had a gap due to an illness. Trying to find professors who might remember me after 4 years away, I figured I needed to give them time.

    The biggest mistake I made was underestimating myself. I applied to any and all schools then got in to some and I was like darn I wish I’d gone for more schools closer to me. I might have gotten in.

    I personally sent all of my LOR links as soon as I opened my applications back in September, and I'm so glad I did! Typically, you aren't the only student a professor is writing a letter for, so waiting to send them the link 2 weeks out really isn't a ton of time. One professor took about a month and a half to write mine because she had to write 7 other ones, so give yourself (and them) plenty of time to get things done without having to rush

    • @pinkpoet14
      @pinkpoet14 Před 5 lety +1

      I agree. I sent the links around late September/early October (ie around the same time I asked my professors to write the letters.) This made it easier for me to keep track of everything (I could see who had and hadn't filled out the letter yet,) and it meant they could fill out the form whenever they were ready!

    As far as the interview process, the school that I'm interested in going to doesn't have one. I just have to submit the usual...transcripts, letters of recommendation, statement of goals and resume. But if for any reason I do have an interview, one of the main reasons I chose the school is because it has the cheapest tuition but I don't want to sound like an ass lol My cousin and good friend also went to this school and they enjoyed their time there, plus it's in a city I'm interested in living long term. I'll just do more research like you said in the video. Thanks for all of the great info!

Now I’m having to figure out what I’m gonna do and have to go through the whole application process again for this program I should’ve applied for a year ago. Really wish someone caught that before I applied, but it was also on me for not looking through the program in the first place. Just hope I get accepted into this new one

      Will you have managers at work that can write you a letter? If you're close / talk to your BA professors and explain it will probably be a few years before you apply, they might say "that's fine, let me know when you do apply and I'll write you a letter."

    • @discogoth
      @discogoth Před 4 lety

      Keep in contact. I’m still in my undergrad, but when I really connect with a professor, I continue to talk to them after I’m done with their class(es). Since I’m a humanities major, that means I’m keeping up by emailing asking if they’ve read anything compelling recently, and then I read it and later pop into their office hours to chat about it. You can modify this for whatever you study, by asking for articles or research papers they’ve read recently and asking questions via email.
