When my mother and father passed, myself and 7 brothers were the palbears. In both instances, we walked behind the funeral coach with my 8 sisters to the cemetery.
Though it was extremely difficult emotionally, it was an absolute honor and privilege.

Very useful thankyou. Someone has just asked me to to do this for the first time, and I want to, but its pretty daunting. In all the funerals I've been to before it's not something you pay much attention to the detail.

I am going to be a pallbearer for my dad at the end of the month. As we are a family spread over the UK, a practice was not possible... I found this video and will be sharing it with the other 5 who will be carrying as I found it very helpful... Some of my nerves are alleviated. No doubt I'll be watching a few times to make sure I have it straight in my head when the time arrives.
Thank you for all you do for those in your care.

I was taught feet first through every door when entering & exiting with the exception of entering the hearse so that the feet would naturally exit first when dismounted (or disembarking). Only for Senior Church Ministers/ Priests, they will be carried into their churches head first when entering. [forgive me, english isn't my first language]

I've just started working for Co-op funeral care and I'm supposed to be a pall bearer on Monday. (I've never done it before) but I'm 5'2 and my colleagues are 6ft. I'm wondering how I'm supposed to shoulder the coffin when there's such a huge height difference. Do we then hold it the same way as the family? Otherwise the coffin is catapulting over my head.

Hi Crusty, Welcome to the profession. Every funeral directors do things slightly different so it's important you follow their lead. They may not show you, if so follow our video and you won't go wrong. Good luck. Matthew Uden

Hi John, I'm glad you've found the video helpful. It's going to be a very hard day but when it comes to the pall bearing I promise everything will be ok. The Funeral Directors will be by your side so nothing can go wrong. Just remember that you're doing the last thing you can do for someone, so be proud not nervous. Kind regards. Matthew Uden

does the body not slide when the casket is slanted such as when going down stairs ?

Sorry if this is too much information, but at interments in the cemetery here in Malta coffins aren’t lowered horizontally as they are in Britain because the grave opening isn’t big enough. Instead a heavy rope is tied around it and it’s lowered vertically by cemetery workers, with one of them going down a ladder into the grave to position it. And yes, I have heard the body shifting inside the coffin, which I find quite harrowing.

What's the procedure for carrying the coffin out of the church? I need to know urgently, please!

    • @matthewuden1087
      @matthewuden1087 Před rokem

Hi John, please see below -
      Approach coffin.
Stand in position 2&2 or 3&3 facing each other across the coffin.
All in one movement place you hands underneath the coffin and lift together.
Once lifted to shoulder height please your shoulder underneath.
Everyone Face the alter and then you will all be facing the correct way.
Once on shoulders the funeral directors will move the trestles.
Turn on the spot - side stepping.
Once facing out start with your left foot first.
      I hope this helps.
      Matthew Uden

Are you supposed to place the boutonniere on the coffin after you put it down, or is this not common?

My belovéd Mother passed away on 5 April 2023. I simply WOULDN'T trust myself to carry my Mother's coffin, and be in procession....Getting it wrong can only be done ONCE!

So sorry to hear that your Mother passed away, our thoughts are with you. When a family or friends of a loved one chose to carry their coffin it can be really beautiful, and as long as they listen to the conductor they should be fine. We do have bearers and the conductor on hand to help if they are struggling though. Of course, it is really nice when our trained team carry because they do it with precision and grace.
