Not sure about the Avata 1, but I know with the Avata 2 if you loose you GPS for any reason in manual it switches to normal mode. Happened to me trying to fly into a train tunnel two videos back on my page. My best guess is that the cell phone tower next to you caused some interference causing that to happen.
Usually it does that if you approach your maximum highest limit. Probably. Increase your highest lever 50 more feet over the 400ft limit
