BACKPACK BLOWERS: HIP vs TUBE THROTTLE. WHICH ONE IS BETTER?
Vložit
- čas přidán 17. 11. 2018
- I've been using backpack blowers for approximately 10 years now and it wasn't until a couple months ago that I've tried a hip throttle for the first time. I've been very curious about the benefit of each style and noticed that hip throttle blowers seem to work best for the big cleanups, like parking lots and fall leaf cleanups. The tube throttle seems to work better for the quicker summer cleanups after routine mowing.
Question of the day: What style backpack blower do you prefer and why?

Thanks for watching!
Just bought my 8010H ! Happy I went with the hip throttle I don t have to worry about breaking the cable or the handle on the tube. Also with the hip throttle it makes it easier to stop any blower moving from side to side on your back as you are using both hands and the straps to keep it in place!
Use a zipp tie my dude
Up until last week we had never used a hip throttle blower. Like anything new I’m sure we could get used to using it but have no complaints with tube throttle so most likely will continue using that style. It was good meeting you 👍🏻
Thanks for your comments, nice meeting you too!
Hip throttles a lot more comfortable for big clean up jobs in my opinion. Lot less fatigue in the hand when your not operating the trigger and moving the tube. Tube trigger throttles better for work where you are on and off the throttle a lot.
Exactly. I'm liking the hip throttle right now with all the leaf falling on the ground.
Last year I purchased the Husqvarna 580 back pack blower. The dealer recommended 👌 the hip control, because of the fact that the tube control has the wire hanging on the side and it could get caught on branches and other objects and can be damaged easily.
I always look at the land scapers trailers to see what kind of back pack they using and most of the time I noticed that they have the hip trottel blower. I live in Northern part of New Jersey, which is very country with plenty of beautiful trees 🌳and woods
I notice all tube throttles here in Michigan. I was talking with an ECHO product manager and he said the hip throttle is popular on the east coast. For me personally, I like tube throttles for grass clipping cleanups and the hip for big leaf cleanups and extended use.
Great video👍🏻Cool that you got many people's opinions. So, I was planning on buying an ECHO PB-9010T(Tube Throttle), but was debating on whether the ECHO PB-9010H(Hip Throttle) was a better option. After watching & reading many reviews I am going to stick with my first instinct and purchase the ECHO PB-9010T (Tube Throttle).
Have both hip and tube throttle blowers .. both have worked well .. if given the choice having one or the other I’d prefer hip throttle due to the fact- 🤔 or personal opinion I feel you have more and better throttle control with the hip throttle and I can still set it and forget it on cruise while I pick my nose etc.,! 😳😵💫 plus it’s Hip to be hip 🤣
Haha, I've mostly used tube throttles, but definitely like the Hip during leaf season.
The video turned out great. Well done. Go team tube throttle!!! #teamtubethrottle 😂
Thanks, I have a relatively new camera and mic. I thought the audio turned out well with all the noise in the background. Thanks for participating in the video!
I went with the cheapest one. Picked-up 8010 hip version because a dealer charged $529. They did not have a trigger version in stock. Other dealers had triggers and only discounted them to $580-575. I guess 8010 is a hot item.
It does a great job for big cleanups. I have backpack blowers with both tube and hip. It took me a little to get used to the hip throttle, but I like it better for big leaf cleanups.
I'm all about hip throttle! What are you going to do with your left hand anyway?? Also, when walking through bushes I shorten my tube and flail it around over the top of the bush to get leaves out, it's nice to throttle down with the other hand if in a bed with mulch.
Glad to hear the support for the hip throttle. I hear they're more popular on the far east side of the US.
@markthomasbuilder I know this is an old video, but hopefully I can still get an answer. On the hip throttle, don't they all mostly have a cruise control, so in theory couldn't you still just use one hand ? That seemed to be the big plus for most that liked the tube throttle. Also, did you notice if the hip throttle offered anymore stability to the backpack ? seems like the tube throttle would allow the pack to move around on you back more, I'm sure a lot of this can be defeated dependending on how secure your straps are, but in theory , it seems the hip throttle design with both hands on deck would offer more rigidness and stability. Also, I am looking at purchasing my first BP-Blower and was looking at the Echo 770 , I found Home-D selling the Tube version for $75 more, but other online retailers offer both versions at the same price. I have no real live experience to make a determination, but I am a homeowner using this for personal use, only about a 1//4 acre of wet damp leaves, small sticks and general clean up. I would love to get your input, Thanks !
Thanks for reaching out. If I had to say what my go-to backpack blower is, I'd say the ECHO 770T. The tube flexes nice and it's great for everyday work with lots of power. The 8010 hip throttle is a great choice for fall leaf cleanups. I'd say the hip throttle probably offers some extra stability, but both have cruise control, which is good for a big parking lots and yard cleanups. My 8010 has the older hose that's under recall, so I have to bring it to my dealer to get switched out. The tube is pretty stiff, so I'm hoping the new one is better. Hope that helps!
You can still use your hand with hip throttle. I had both and enjoy using both. My next 9010 may be hip
Yes, that's true. The hip is my go to for fall leaf cleanups.
I have a PB-9010T. For one thing, it is a beast! The other thing; I like having my left arm free for balance and grabbing trees for stability. I can see myself going down without that free arm. But, that’s me.
A question on the hip throttle. The tube throttle has a trigger allowing for instant power up and return to idle. Is this the same for the hip throttle or is it a set and go type switch?
It's a set and go type throttle. There's no need to hold it down, which is great for leaf cleanups.
markthomasbuilder, Ironically, I’m having a hard time “pulling the trigger” so to speak on purchasing one or the other as I’ve never used either one. I like the waa, waa, waa (who doesn’t) of the tube throttle giving me use of the free hand. Wait! If the hip throttle is “set and go”, why were those surveyed debating the use of a free hand? I think I’m narrowing my choice down by simply typing. I suppose now it’s going to come down to maintenance costs. And per your review, the hip throttle will be less expensive to repair. I’ve had my handheld ECHO for going on 15 years and beyond replacing the primer bulb, it’s been a near perfect machine. I would expect the same from my next ECHO. CRAP! Toss a coin for me and let me know how it turned out.
Lol, I flipped a coin. Heads for hip and tails for tube throttle. It landed on heads. So hip it is!
I like the hand held blowers but they need more power. We do have 1 tube throttle blower shindaiwa 802 work fine for us.
I recently made a video review of the new ECHO PB-2620, which does a great job for a handheld.
Handhelds are good for blowing clippings off tiny lawns that only take 10-15 minutes even with a push mower. Other than that, I use the pb770t but I kind of wanna get an eb802rt.
And what happens when the hip throttle breaks in the middle of a lawn job?
I've heard that tube throttle is more likely to snag on something while working compared to the hip throttle. I don't know how easy a hop throttle is to fix.
I went to HD to look at one. None on display and the boxes 📦 were 20 feet up on the highest shelf...
You may need to go to a dealer if you want to try one out first.
@@MarkThomasBuilder
Good idea.
Thanks
Thanks for the video. I had never seen tube throttle before. I’ll stick with hip throttle.👍🏿
Interesting to hear that, I find the tube throttle to be more popular around the midwest. I hear east coast has more hip throttles. Is that the region you're from?
@@MarkThomasBuilder I’m in southern Louisiana. The first blower I came across was hip throttle so I’m guessing that’s why I was not familiar with the tube throttle
Okay, that makes sense... I really like the hip throttle for fall leaf cleanups, and the tube throttle for cleaning daily sidewalk grass clippings.
Personally I prefer the traditional trigger in the tube
😀👍
I think using the hip model saves were and tear on the blower buy not reving it up so much
Good point, I never thought of that.
I have a a tube throttled one PB 580T there dude and I'm a lawn care business person also tractor man lawn care
Cool, I haven't tried that one but I'd guess it's great for everyday use after mowing.
I prefer tube throttle over hip throttle because I like everything in one place
Yes, I get what you're saying.
Plus, tube throttle makes it revv up faster.
@@Zachpoteet380 yeah, that too
Tube throttle
I'm sure that's the popular choice. I like hip for big leaf cleanups.
Everybody in California who runs echo seems to all have the hip throttle. I say no way, Jose.
Which one do you prefer? Tube throttle or hip throttle? Please say where you're from and why you prefer a certain one.
Tube throttle
michael nicoletti owner and operator of nicoletti property management. i use all makita mm4 blowers with hip throttles. i prefer them due to blowing down commercial lots. i also find the handles more comfortable without the extra parts attached.
I have a hip throttle and like it just fine. I stow it with the throttle arm up so it's ready for the next start-up which is fine except sometimes I forget to swing the arm down and get the blower on my back and realize that the throttle arm is sticking up behind my left shoulder.... grrr.
Y'all already know I like tube the best and where I live is in my username. Originally from California tho.
1 st
Nice!🙌
One hand operation
You could run 1 hand if you have the hip throttle wide open for big parking lot clearings. I'm betting that tube throttle is preferred about 75 percent of the time, if I had to guess.
@@MarkThomasBuilder but what about if the hip throttle breaks in the middle of a job?
Tube
Good choice.
I prefer tube throttle myself I have Echo Pb 8010T and Echo Pb 9010T both are tube throttle the 9010 have more power than the 8010
It's amazing what ECHO was able to do to get the additional blowing power.
Echo PB 9010T 220 miles per hour of air speed. Moves 1,117 cubic feet per minute that’s a lot of power very powerful blower can rip the flowers off the flower beds easily
just got a hip throttle by accident and I can't replace it for the same price. $130 price difference. I guess I"m sticking with the hip
I like the hip for leaf cleanups. It's a little weird at first, but you'll get used to it. I didn't know there was that much of a price difference.
@@MarkThomasBuilder I ended up getting it during their rare 20% off sale. The dealers in my area (northeast) only stock the hip throttle. Exchanging it at this point would be a significant unknown wait and I would lose the sale discount.
@@davem8697 hey man. Which dealer is giving the discount in NE? For large cleanups like right now is the hip version better? Why would you want to switch back to non hip?
@@24rxman the sale is over. It’s normally only a couple days a year that the manufacturer offers the sale. There’s no easy way of telling when it will occur besides calling. I got mine at Turf Depot in Londonderry NH. Shiandowa version (same as echo but red) was 20% off opposed to the Echo’s 15%
@@MarkThomasBuilder now that I’ve had a chance to use the blower several times, the hip throttle was a happy mistake. I originally wanted a trigger because that’s what I’m used to, but I quickly adapted to the hip and prefer it now over the hand throttle for a couple reasons:
1. Throttle cable doesn’t get stuck or manipulated wrong when moving and storing the blower making moving the tube much easier
2. The ease of setting the speed on varying levels of low to high but not to full throttle is awesome. It’s like a cruise control. This backpack blower is a beast and I don’t need or use full throttle all the time. I realize the hand throttle had an option to keep the trigger down, but in my old husqvarna it didn’t do a good job of holding the speed.
3.(bonus) I like the 2 hand operation. I can always turn the throttle down low if I need to pick something up or keep it at the same cruise control. I didn’t often need my other hand when blowing before and now it doesn’t feel as awkward plus I don’t lose the ability to use it for picking up items.
I've used hip and tube and tube wins hands down! But then again, hips don't lie! Lol. I wonder what it would be like if stihl made a hip throttle backpack blower.
That would be interesting to see. I've heard that the east coast is where hip throttles are more popular.
Having lived in Sacramento I can confirm they use mostly echo and red max with the hip throttle, hardly any stihl users. But Sac doesn't feel very Californian to me at all, though it's the state capital, it feels a lot like a southern city in many ways. But people in the south, or at least in Oklahoma City also like echo and red max, but with the tube throttle instead and there's also more stihl stuff. The town I grew up in is an hour south of Sac and has more stihl stuff and tube throttles, and feels a lot like southern California.
There’s only 2 things I hate…
1) people who are intolerant towards other people’s preferences and opinions
2) People who prefer Hip Throttles…
TubeThrottleGang Rise Up!!!! 😂
Haha, now that's a definite opinion! Thanks for voting.
I want a “Jaw throttle” so I can adjust it by clenching my jaw which frees up both hands!
Interesting concept
I’ve listened to reasons for using the hip throttle, and they all sound like bullshit. Just don’t understand why anyone would want to use two hands instead of one. It just seems stupid.
It took me awhile to get used to a hip throttle. I see it handy for big fall leaf cleanups. If I had a choice, I'd go with tube throttle.
The hip is more commercial quality.
I like it for big leaf cleanups.
1:37 What’s all that dam noise?!!! 😾 I thought these loud, polluting, dust makers were outlawed by meow! Just buy an extra battery and do your job without killing the earth!
These will soon be outlawed in California. It will be interesting to see what they come out with for battery power.
