I've never heard of this "registering" thing. I simply sat my exams in the school hall like everyone else, and got my grades a couple months later. The teachers must have sorted out any bureaucracy behind the scenes for all the students. I mean, they'd sort of be failing their jobs if they didn't.

I didn't do very well in my GCSE'S either, but then I went to college for four years and did very well and that did absolutely nothing towards getting a job. It really puts you off seeking professional education

Back in Karl’s time: can be successful with one E in a GCSE. Nowadays: teenagers can’t get much without English and Maths minimum, and for most jobs now they want a minimum of a uni degree/couple years apprenticeship due to increased competition. 😭

I never registered way in advance either, you were just told what time your exam was and tuned up, you then signed a register on arrival before sitting down to take the exam, but that was it, that would have been around 1992, I think they lost his results, because if he did turn up, which I believe he did, he'd have probably had the same scenario as me.

Personally the way I see it (as do most employers and higher/further education institutions) being entered at a level in which obtaining an A*-C is possible and coming out with a D or less IS considered failing purely down to the fact that, as Rob Chilton points out, you missed the level you were entered for. HOWEVER, some people are entered for Foundation level in which the highest possible grade is a C thus anything but a U is considered a pass but it is in a lesser qualification.

I've read it, you don't get it. A D is a grade, and it can be used as evidence. But it is still considered a fail, a C and above are the grades accepted as passes. Anything below is considered a failure. The results we got just tell us the grade, the D is a grade but not a pass.

In New Zealand an E is Excellence or an A. M merit, A an achieved or C. NA is a fail or not achieved.
