    I've never heard of this "registering" thing. I simply sat my exams in the school hall like everyone else, and got my grades a couple months later. The teachers must have sorted out any bureaucracy behind the scenes for all the students. I mean, they'd sort of be failing their jobs if they didn't.

    I always wonder at people complaining of Gervais and Merchant's insults to Karl as they are so obviously affectionate (non-Brits might not understand this concept) and he has made buckets of cash from them.
    However I actually, for the first time, felt really sorry for him here. If he wasn't genuinely despondent at hearing his result then that was great acting. Sourcing his educational results - that he doesn't even know - in order to make him look stupid really is pretty mean.
    Never mind Karl; as Ricky said, you've done alright for yourself mate. And please tell me the secret of landing a radio producer job without any formal qualifications (as you then thought)...

    Finally! Personally the way I see it (as do most employers and higher/further education institutions) being entered at a level in which obtaining an A*-C is possible and coming out with a D or less IS considered failing purely down to the fact that, as Rob Chilton points out, you missed the level you were entered for. HOWEVER, some people are entered for Foundation level in which the highest possible grade is a C thus anything but a U is considered a pass but it is in a lesser qualification.

    Exam results are for the most part a load of bollocks anyway so I wouldn't have been bothered either if I was Karl . The educational system in this country starting at age 7 indoctrinates kids into believing that the exam results they get a young age will somehow determine their entire lives. In reality it's much more down to luck, your persona, who you know and how much brown nosing and back biting you're prepared to do to be deemed "successful" in the corporate world. Besides, the exams you sit are no more than mere memory tests and the bar has been lowered to the point where even degrees are worthless nowadays. As education has become more available to the masses it has in turn devalued it to the point where graduates are working in factories,supermarkets and in admin roles and this subsequently increases the entry levels of said jobs. The whole system is archaic, snobbish and ridiculous.

    I've read it, you don't get it. A D is a grade, and it can be used as evidence. But it is still considered a fail, a C and above are the grades accepted as passes. Anything below is considered a failure. The results we got just tell us the grade, the D is a grade but not a pass.

    I've got 8 GCSE's A* - C and 5 A-levels and I'm still in education, I'm not going to go back and try to get 1 grade up in German for a GCSE I'm not going to use anyway... D and E ARE passes, sure they're pretty much useless but they still are passes and still recognized qualifications.

  • @wowsa0
    @wowsa0 Před 11 lety

    Any grade, even F or G, is a pass. U is the only way of actually 'failing'. For most purposes though, particularly entrance to further education, they will want you to have grade A*-C to get in, so although D-F are all technically passes they are not good enough for a lot of things you might want to go on to do so it doesn't matter much. But you still get a certificate with a D-F, it's still a qualification, it's just up to employers and 6th form colleges whether they value them. Google it.

    A* to C pass for the Level 2 qualification, D to F passes for the Level 1... so yes a D is a pass, in a lesser qualification though. You've failed the Level 2 GCSE if you have a D. Level 2 GCSEs are the only ones Colleges and 6th forms will accept so it equates to a fail overall in practice.

    Well that's valid if you want to go farther than the average to be a doctor or a pilot or something, but GCSEs are fine for at least getting a job or getting into college. They're like a bridge qualification for a mediocre job or college to get a degree or whatever.
