We chat with Jack about his project and how he learned to rebuild these robots to animate the same way they did in the 80s.

Also about your Billy Bob, you can find spare parts for Billy Bob online like his guitar, you could even get a new Billy Bob mask from Aaron Fechter "the guy that owns creative engineering" since the animatronics for Showbiz Pizza was built in Creative Engineering and Creative Engineering is doing great nowadays and even has the molds and supplies needed to make spare parts like Masks, paws, and other parts that relies on molds.

Seeing the old animatronics makes me sad. I love when I see people repairing them. They're really peices of history and art and I love them.
They really are pieces of history and art. I’m glad someone is giving them the care they need, and in turn, giving the artists and mechanics behind them recognition and respect as well. I know FNAF is fun and popular, and some people find animatronics creepy even without games like that, but in my eyes, any robot is a cool robot, and pre-digital electromechanical systems are freaking fascinating to me! I know this maker is using a digital control scheme now, but the fact that he kept it compatible with the original wiring and tubing while still being able to give it his own series of motions and sounds is so awesome, and to me, the perfect blend of restoration and originality!
these characters hold a special little place in my heart. fnaf might have introduced me to them, but i fell in love with their story. it's a shame chuck e cheese replaced them.

"SFX" stands for "special effects". I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) but "VFX" pertains exclusively to CG and other post-effects, where special effects consist of explosions and puppets and other on-set or in-camera effects.

Kudos to him for deciding to not upgrade the figures with gradual movement and compliance. The jerky motion might not be pretty, but it's part of their design.

So animatronic endoskeletons actually do like that. Also, these things being powered by player piano... it feels right for some reason. Probably because animatronics and player pianos both fall into the category of "robot does stuff blew people's minds a century or so ago".

Restoring one of those old beasts is a lot of work, Jack is to be congratulated.
Jack might want to talk to the people at Gilderfluke & Co. I believe they did the controllers for the Chuck E Cheese characters, and they are still in the business of making animation controllers for characters. You probably don't like posted links, so just look up Gilderfluke on the web.
How about talking to Aaron Fechter? He is the creator of these animatronics.

He actually got it backwards. Showbiz bought Chuck E Cheese, but because of a licensing agreement with the animatronic character's inventor, they rebranded with Chuck E. Cheese characters.
Yep. I'm an '80s kid, so I've got more than a few nightmare-inducing memories of ShowBiz Pizza.
That's right.Maybe he was nervous. Jack should know that Chuck E. Cheese went bankrupt in 1985 and Showbiz "absorbed" the assets of CEC by agreement without even paying a dime, acquiring their crappy characters, cheesy name, and other assets while discarding their liabilities. Everyone who listened to Nolan Bushnell and invested in CEC before Showbiz absorbed them lost their butts. Then, Showbiz simply changed its name to CEC to get rid of its own legacy and to stop using characters owned by Aaron Fechter.
Would rather all Chuck E. Cheese had been rebranded as Showbiz Pizza. I don't know why since I never set foot in one that I remember, but Chuck E. Cheese was some place I just didn't like even though it was the same idea. Showbiz Pizza I'll always have fond memories of, especially since one of my birthdays was spent there and I got the record and yellow t-shirt from them for being the birthday boy. Too bad I left the record in the sun and it warped.
I had many birthdays at Showbiz. I have a lot of good memories there watching these animatronics.

Animatronics are amazing! Great video showing the old school characters. I really enjoyed it. I created this board called the Robotochi Automation Breakout board for anyone who wants to start building animatronics like this. It's powered by arduino and specializes in servo-audio control!

No, Chuck E. Cheese doesn't own the Rock-a-Fire Explosion but Aaron Fechter owns the rights to them.
He would have to have Aaron's permission but Aaron refuses to give the rights of the characters to other companies so that's why the remaining restaurants got changed into Chuck E Cheese. Well I don't blame him, the Characters is like his childrens, not literally and Aaron has a channel where he makes videos of the Rock Afire explosion.

It's amazing how modern technology has made these animatronic's more accessible and modernized.
Looking back Jack Turner has definitely managed to go far. He now has full sets, works with Aaron Fechter, has managed to make replica fur for the characters, and even sells some bots privately. He's even building a stage for his main full Rock Afire Explosion set and has some rare bots like Friendly Freddy, Fats (from Wolf Pack 5), Uncle Klunk, and 2 surviving Rock Afire Explosion prototype mechs being that of Looney Bird and Fatz.

Honestly I think it’s so cool that there are people out there taking their own free time and resources to restore these animatronics! I’ve always been into robotics so videos like this are super cool and fascinating for me while also being kind of creepy.
Great video! You did an incredible job rebuilding it. My father operated the Bethel Road location in Columbus Ohio back in the 1980’s. I loved hanging out there, nothing to do but play video games all day.

I'm finishing up my last week now, as a matter of fact. So, I know it can be a bit overwhelming, but I'm here to tell you there's nothing to worry about. Uh, you'll do fine. So, let's just focus on getting you through your first week. Okay?
Uh, let's see, first there's an introductory greeting from the company that I'm supposed to read. Uh, it's kind of a legal thing, you know. Um, "Welcome to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. A magical place for kids and grown-ups alike, where fantasy and fun come to life. Fazbear Entertainment is not responsible for damage to property or person. Upon discovering that damage or death has occurred, a missing person report will be filed within 90 days, or as soon property and premises have been thoroughly cleaned and bleached, and the carpets have been replaced."
Blah blah blah, now that might sound bad, I know, but there's really nothing to worry about. Uh, the animatronic characters here do get a bit quirky at night, but do I blame them? No. If I were forced to sing those same stupid songs for twenty years and I never got a bath? I'd probably be a bit irritable at night too. So, remember, these characters hold a special place in the hearts of children and we need to show them a little respect, right? Okay.
So, just be aware, the characters do tend to wander a bit. Uh, they're left in some kind of free roaming mode at night. Uh...Something about their servos locking up if they get turned off for too long. Uh, they used to be allowed to walk around during the day too. But then there was The Bite of '87. Yeah. I-It's amazing that the human body can live without the frontal lobe, you know?
Uh, now concerning your safety, the only real risk to you as a night watchman here, if any, is the fact that these characters, uh, if they happen to see you after hours probably won't recognize you as a person. They'll p-most likely see you as a metal endoskeleton without its costume on. Now since that's against the rules here at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, they'll probably try to...forcefully stuff you inside a Freddy Fazbear suit. Um, now, that wouldn't be so bad if the suits themselves weren't filled with crossbeams, wires, and animatronic devices, especially around the facial area. So, you could imagine how having your head forcefully pressed inside one of those could cause a bit of discomfort...and death. Uh, the only parts of you that would likely see the light of day again would be your eyeballs and teeth when they pop out the front of the mask, heh.
Y-Yeah, they don't tell you these things when you sign up. But hey, first day should be a breeze. I'll chat with you tomorrow. Uh, check those cameras, and remember to close the doors only if absolutely necessary. Gotta conserve power. Alright, good night.” kinda vibe from this

This is awesome!! I’m deep into robotics, and I wanted to see how old school animatronics worked. Pneumatic control seems very effective, and its super cool that they used to use program wheels out of player pianos! Best of luck to this guy and his project, and hopefully he can hire a fursuit maker or a movie prosthetics artist to create the original character he wants with the robot! What a fun hobby!
They used to walk around during the day too!But then the bite of 87'.
I worked on these characters in the mid 80s as a technician for showbiz. The shows were on 9 track tapes. We didn’t use player piano boards - they were custom built. It looks like the same solenoid bank that was on the real show. The primary problem was rebuilding the cylinders to take care of air leaks.
Did the animatronics have a voice box or were they voiced by people in a seperate room?

Holy hell, I can't believe how far those animatronics from Funtown Mountain have come. In an urban explorer's video, you get a glimpse of the band, showing that time had truly been unkind and left these robots battered and decayed.
