Iranian state-run media have confirmed the deaths of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash in the province of East Azerbaijan on Sunday. They were en route to the city of Tabriz. “The servant of the Iranian nation, Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, has achieved the highest level of martyrdom whilst serving the people,” state television announced.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency provided additional details about the others on board the helicopter; there were nine people in total.
According to Tasnim, the passengers included East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati and Maj Gen Seyed Mehdi Mousavi, head of the president’s security team. A pilot, co-pilot, and a technician were also on board.
