God bless him, Bowie wrote and performed many brilliant songs down the years for a number of great albums, but he was never more at home than here, in front of a live audience. I had the great pleasure of seeing him play live a couple of times, and his stage presence was always amazing, as was the banter he always had with his band and with the audience. I'm not sure we'll ever see his like again. RIP David! 💔 🙋‍♂ Lovely reaction as usual Shawn.

@@thisworldofwater8017Not on this one pal. Not a shred of flash. No crazy makeup, hair style, clothing, smoke bombs, lasers, flames, nothing. No dozens of backup singers or dancers throwing themselves around like the idiots in today’s pop and rap. Bowie in a suit and tie, with his natural charisma, smile, and voice.

This is my favourite Bowie song from the "Berlin Trilogy" of albums recorded when Bowie, along with his good friend Iggy Pop, had relocated to Berlin in order to "dry out" from alcohol and drug abuse issues. Fellow British Berlin resident, ambient music maestro Brian Eno, produced the albums and brought in Robert Fripp, (King Crimson), on guitar and "Frippertronics" effects pedals to add his unique sound to the recordings. These albums have a darker more experimental feel to them than Bowies other recordings.

Best version!! Thanks! I just love this story!!
David Bowie on Heroes, “I always said it was a couple of lovers by the Wall that prompted the idea for Heroes,” Bowie told Classic Rock in 2015, explaining its meaning. “Actually, it was [Bowie producer] Tony Visconti and his girlfriend. Tony was married at the time, so I couldn’t talk about it. But I can now say that the lovers were Tony and a German girl [Antonia Maass] that he’d met while we were in Berlin. I think possibly his marriage was in the last few months. And it was very touching because I could see that Tony was very much in love with this girl, and it was that relationship which sort of motivated the song.” “I’ll never forget that,” he recalled. “It was one of the most emotional performances I’ve ever done. I was in tears. They’d backed up the stage to the Wall itself so that it was acting as our backdrop. We kind of heard that a few of the East Berliners might actually get the chance to hear the thing, but we didn’t realize in what numbers they would. "And there were thousands on the other side that had come close to the wall. So it was like a double concert, where the Wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I’d never done anything like that in my life. And I guess I never will again. Source: www.loudersound.com/features/the-story-behind-the-song-heroes-by-david-bowie

How magical it must have been to be in that audience hearing that song in Berlin. I just got back from a trip to Berlin. We saw the apartment building where Bowie lived with Iggy Pop. A pub downstairs had a Bowie Dark Star poster in the window. I wish we had time to do more of a music trip, but we did also get to see many sites related to the Berlin Wall and the Cold War. It just makes this music all the more poignant.

The story goes that one night on the elevated train in Berlin, Bowie saw two lovers leaning against the Berlin Wall, and he marveled at the contrast and how life/love finds a way-
Bullets over our heads, the shame is on the other side, we can beat them, forever and ever, …
You picked up on a LOT man well done, just not WHY the bullets 😉 > he didn’t make it specific, that was probably purposeful, as it can almost apply to ‘life during wartime’ anywhere🤘🏽
This is my favorite Bowie song for the reasons above, and this is a great performance.

Pretty sure Robert Fripp (King Crimson) was responsible for much of the sound on this track and album, and may have co-produced it with Eno, with whom he has a history of mind-boggling collaboration. Moreover, Mr. Fripp probably provided the aboriginal guitar track. That high angelic drone goes all the way back to their first album, and the song, Moonchild, whereon it hovers from on high. 1969. Birth of Prog.

Sometimes I forget that the younger generation hasn't known a world where there's a wall between East and West Berlin and they don't know the difference it made. It made a difference when people from our side went over to the other side too provide entertainment to them. That's why most of our musical legends were always playing in Berlin if they could. This is also a generation that's never heard the term the iron curtain. That's a Russian thing you'll have to read up on it. Peace!
