      That sucks. Will have you in prayers. My entire family is just/currently. I lucked out and wasn’t around the person they got it from. My sister, bro in law and kiddos got it but got through pretty uneventfully. Kids were better in 2-3 days.
      Mom took about a week and dad is still on the mend, but he had some recent medical issues that probably caused his case to be more rough.

    The monk thing also applies to fighting an enemy caster. If they are concentrating on a crazy effect, it might be worth it to have the monk peel off and run over and harry them with 3 or 4 concentration checks

    • @vadaritis

      So long as they dont have a dangerous bodyguard to zone ypu out. Cause i dont care if that arch mage is holding most of your party members with a hold person if they are standing next to a pit fiend.
      Unless that is the only option left. Its all in context. One of my players would constantly do this and wonder why they kept getting knocked unconscious...

    • @matthewcrowther890
      @matthewcrowther890 Před 3 lety +2

      Also worth nothing, concentration is automatically dropped if the caster is incapacitated. Conditions like, oh idk, stun do cause the target to be incapacitated. Might be worth blowing a couple Ki points trying to land it so the spell is insta dropped

    • @DrScott-i9r
      @DrScott-i9r Před 3 lety +3

      Magic Missile is a marvelous concentration break - auto hit and each missile forces a concentration check.

    • @harrykeogh2466
      @harrykeogh2466 Před 2 lety +1

      @@DrScott-i9r I'm not sure this is correct. The phb says save for each source of damage and the magic missile spell is the source of damage rather than each individual missile, the description for MM says each missile hits simultaneously thus doing all of its damage at once not split up into individual damage dice.
      There could be an argument for a ranged multi attack for instance to cause individual concentration saves as each arrow would hit seperately, but I would still argue that the shooter is still "a source of damage". If there is an errata or something that shows I'm wrong then then i'll hold my hands up to it and say fairs fair.

    5:09 Don't be a Ronnie. Ronnie was my brother's level 5 wizard that ran past the 3 paladins and a knight (playing 4e) to use burning hands on the storm giant. He was then one-shotted as he was kicked down a mountain.
    On targets to look for, keep an eye out for dangerous abilities. Things that leap out to me are wraiths and shadows, which have lingering effects that can cripple a party not just this combat but future combats, especially if you don't have the spells to deal with it. Losing 12hp permanently every hit is probably a bigger issue than just 24 slashing damage from another creature that can be healed later.

  • @mahedros
    @mahedros Před 3 lety +27

    Your point about prioritizing positioning over pure damage output is a great one. Back when I was more active in playing MMO's, I recall some of my guild members talking about players they knew who where excellent at going through their rotation and generating massive DPS numbers, but who were terrible people to have in a raid group because they'd stand still and do as much damage as they could while ignoring the mechanics of each fight.

    any Dm that would call out a group for metagaming when they're watching each other in battle, positioning to allow each other to do their thing and prioritize helping each other and assessing threats is an adversarial one, honestly. As if you wouldn't have an eye out for yoru battle buddies during combat.
    especially since it's in the rules that all participants in the initiative are aware of each other unless someone successfully hid or is invisible and hides.
    also, an addition to the point you made about not overcomplicating being creative, a lot of times players forget that the super complicated maneuver they wanted to do to win style points mid combat could be explained easy with one of the simple actions they're allowed to do on their turn, like a shove/grapple attack, or in a rogue's case a bonus action disengage/interact with object.
    taking those actions, and then describing them in those creative fashions would be mechanically sound and cool.

  • @giovannigennaro9732
    @giovannigennaro9732 Před 3 lety +3

    To your point on creativity, this is ware it comes in handy that a lot of striker classes have pretty good rp opportunities. On your turn, Dish out sneak attacks, and when you have to interrogate a prisoner, or haggle down the price on an item, then get creative.

  • @soneca_br
    @soneca_br Před 3 lety +1

    On maneuvers Grappling can have a place when enemies that you really need to kill/capture is trying to run away and the casters have no way of restraining them(or failed to). Can also be used to bully enemy spellcasters, but those are situational compared to just whacking someone in the face.

  • @ThePageTurnerPT
    @ThePageTurnerPT Před 3 lety +2

    I might just be a HUGE nerd, but I really, REALLY want to see you do the math to get all the numbers you do, particularly in your reply video to XP to Level 3 about the +2 to flanking rather than advantage, and now the +9.8% crit chance for the rogue with the use of the Help action

    • @AnaseSkyrider
      @AnaseSkyrider Před 3 lety +1

      It's super basic statistics. There are 20 sides on a d20, and only one of those is a crit, so 1/20 rolls is a crit, which is a probability of 0.05 (5%). When you have advantage, you're looking at the probability of rolling twice where at least one roll is a 20, so you're going to multiply two probabilities together, and so we have to actually look at the probability of *not* getting a 20 (which is 19/20). Multiply 19/20 * 19/20 = 0.9025, so a 90.25% chance of not rolling a crit, or a 9.75% chance to roll at least one crit.

  • @vadaritis
    @vadaritis Před 3 lety +2

    Its important to consider what type of caster as well. You specifically were talking about arcane casters, but enemy clerics are extremely dangerous for very different reasons.
    Usually they have the AC and HP to hold thier own long enough for an ally to help them out. But if you dont, every other monster in that combat is more dangerous, cause of bless, heroism, and just plain old healing among other things.
    This is the type of caster that is generally a high enough priority to be on par as arcane casters. But to take them out, dont be afraid to ask for help in doing so.

    I do believe that, if the striker has the ability to summon "minions" (like the Ranger or druid with Summon Beast or either of his Conjure something spells), he should at first turn cast them to "level" the battlefield, we could even add terrain control with spells like entangle or spike growth depending on your pc level.
    And yes, this is more of a support role, but depending on the situation (and remembering that these are usually bonus actions) you're still attacking constantly.
    What I'm trying to say is that, if you're playing a half caster, you could try leveling your striking role with a crowd control playstyle.

    You didn’t include something I’d always tell players to be mindful of - the push action. If you have two attacks and your allies are coming up before the target goes then use an attack to push them over and then attack at advantage with your second attack - and your allies as they move up, attack, and then back away too. Another thing I’d recommend is to strike and pull back. Enemies (barring some high lvl monsters like the Marilith) only get one reaction attack so if you can burn that off the target it allows your allies to position more freely around it to maximise their effectiveness. That second point might be more of a tank role but it’s a good trick. I use it as a DM a lot. I had a pack of Gnoll hunters attacking the party in a tunnel where they thought they’d be able to bottleneck them but I had the gnolls move up and then break away, allowing their allies to get into melee as well. Party got one attack of opportunity and the Gnoll Hunters got all 8 of their collective attacks on them instead of only two.

    I think the third action a striker should think about is tripping. While it is true that you are sacrificing an attack to make an ability check I would say it is circumstantially better than the help action. Once people start getting multi attack, sacrificing your first attack to gain advantage on your next attack isn't worth it, but if you can give your monk who is right after you in initiative advantage on all four of their attacks, that would be worth it.
    Things to watch out for in this strategy:
    -Make sure the ally you are trying to help goes before the enemy you are tripping, or they will just stand up.
    -You really need to have a good athletics check or the risk is too big.
    -Make sure you are doing it on an enemy that has enough HP to be worth laying multiple attacks into. If your two attacks are just going to kill it, there's no point in sacrificing an attack so that your buddy just overkills it.
    -Make sure to not accidently debuff your ranged friends. Attacks against prone targets get advantage within 5ft, attacks made from further than that get disadvantage. In short, don't piss off your ranger by dropping knocking prone the target he was about to unload into with hunters mark.

If you character decides to set a personal grudge against (eg) spellcasters aside to benefit the party - that's a good strategic choice, and a valid thing to do, _but it's also a roleplay choice._ That should weigh in to your decisions in battle just as much!

    Should you appoint a combat leader?
    Like in a band you have the frontman. They aren't always the lead singer but they interact with the crowd and get the vibe and call out changes to the other band members.
    Should you have a combat "frontman" like the tank, who tells the other strikers where to focus and hit. A person calling the on the spot changes. What do you think of designating a combat coach and how would you play that?

      Fireball is often a great first round choice, especially if you win initiative. You hit a large amount of opponents without hitting your party members. Once combat is joined this is alot harder to do. Also hitting lots of creatures early means your melee members are a better chance of dropping an enemy with their attack. So the early fireball pays off for everyone in your party whereas the haste only helps one of them. If you get the chance to nuke lots of bad guys take that option. Then buff the tank or striker.

    So, is a maneuver like disarmament more of a tank thing, and you just have to hope that the DM is going to roleplay that the enemy who was disarmed will retaliate upon your tank?

    An important concept for many strikers is having a varying damage type, an overly specialized wildfire druid in fire spells even with everything you've mentioned here will find themselves pretty useless against many creatures out there

    What happens if you're the second tank, the second best striker and the only healer?! WHAT DO I DO?!

    Focus fire on whoever has the largest 'ratio' of damage output over ease of killing.

      For this video at least, I think it's Juri of Juri's Revue from Magic: the Gathering (Ravnica setting). Try looking up the card "Juri, Master of the Revue"

    I think the help action like a lot of things in 5e is being overvalued here, or more accurately, the system of 5e makes things like these much less useful, simply because you can't stack advantage and that there are so many things that the game streamlines into advantage giving a benefit that makes many situations actually just poor action economy.
    Why would I not cast 2 or 3 Eldritch blasts to help a rogue with the help action when he can: Flank with likely other party member, fire from concealment, have the surprise round, target is blinded, rogue is invisible, target is prone, target is restrained, etc.
    I think either advantage has to go as a mechanic, or it needs a stacking benefit or more flat numeric bonuses need to be used in addition. There's just flatly too much in the book that suddenly becomes completely pointless just because one set of conditions have already been achieved.
