  • At around 1.30am, emergency services responded to the intersection of Bridge St and Gresham St, in the Sydney CBD.
It's understood construction crews breached a large high pressure gas main, sending workers running for cover.
The first arriving fire appliance from The Rocks could hear the loud gas leak venting from over a block away.
Police closed the road in both directions and established exclusion zones for pedestrians and traffic.
NSW Ambulance arrived and remained on standby during the operation.
Additional fire crews also arrived to support the The Rocks fire station with breathing apparatus.
Fire crews established a high pressure water spray to disperse the gas and prevent it from igniting.
Fire & Rescue Station Officer, Glenn Willsallen said the gas vented around 10 metres into the air.
Emergency gas workers from Jemena were called in to enter the construction pit and to slowly seal the leaking pipe.
After two and a half hours the emergency was declared safe.
Further work will be completed later today to permanently seal the damaged gas main.
