Debora Iyall was the singer for trailblazing punk/new wave band Romeo Void. Here she is to talk about the band's glory days, the new Record Store Day release and occupying Alcatraz.
Thank you Marty for having me do this interview with you. I think it’s the favorite one I’ve done for the promotion of our Mabuhuay live record. I remember hearing a quote once, “I can’t tell you, until I believe you know”. I don’t remember who said it, but a good interviewer is like that. They can have that quality of listening that helps you organize your thoughts and speak from the heart. I would sure love to come to New Zealand someday, we’ll see. Nvr say Nvr. 💋
Dear Ms. Iyall, it's always great to hear the insight of people who have shaped our childhoods. I was born and raised in the Bay Area (San Mateo/Redwood City) but I didn't learn of Romeo Void until I was an adult. Since the temporary reunification of some of the band in 2004, has there been another reunion with the band as a whole? Are you still in contact with each other? Thank you for your musical contributions! Best wishes from Germany, Toni
@@degreeO I absolutely agree on that definition. Some of my most cherished artists have been wildly effective at connecting with people without achieving chart or financial definitions for “success”. I feel lucky to have had a band that supported each others’ creative visions. It’s double plus good we found listeners and the enthusiastic audiences that we did. 💕👏🏽💕
I am thrilled to see this! Debora seems so happy and healthy, her exuberance about life is palpable. I saw Romero Void live in Ann Arbor with none other than Billy Idol opening; an unforgettable evening :-)
Thanks to all the fans checking in here. I just want to let #romeovoid fans that there’s going to be a Best of Romeo Void Live album released Fall 2024. Keep your ear to the ground.
I still play my original Romeo Void vinyl. It sure is a shame the band didn't earn a fortune for these great recordings. Hearing the specific details of the record industry tricks is overwhelmingly sad. Great interview!
I dont know how I would've made it through growing up without the music of Romeo Void. They didn't know me from Adam but I sure knew and bought all i could and played their music.I had the purple Benefactor poster with the indicating glove on my wall until it dry rotted . It was sad when I had to finally take it down. If I had been thinking when I bought it at Music + in 84 I should've had it laminated .
Wow, that goes without saying.… I cannot believe it. I’ve been turning this music up here recently like to 11 just to hear that sucks man and see her sing, and do her thing.… She looks great.… My neighbors love this song I’m pretty sure.
im surprised she's doing so many cover songs now! i'm glad she's doing music :) I always thought of her as an incredibly prolific writer and lyricist. Sometimes I think it's nice to just appreciate an eclectic mix of cover songs too.
I want to sing my favorite songs and learn some favorites of my band mates. It’s challenging, my signing’s as good as it’s ever been and I keep thinking of more songs I want to learn. I’m pleased you appreciate my lyrics, I’ll probably write more of them again. Imho I wrote some good lyrics released on multiple solo recordings. Knife In Water - Dialog, Stay Strong, Singing Until Sunrise. Also do check out the newest version of never say never with The Raton 3, filmed in Denver last month here on You Tube posted via Curt’s Damn Photos.
I just wanna say one thing I love is the way you so comfortably used spoken word. It vibes with my aesthetic and its just so human and also timeless without a need for the constant restrictions of mandatory melody@@deboraiyall3406
@@deboraiyall3406 Ms Iyall Romeo Void's music has the vibe of something that makes me want to lie in bed and heal from a bad childhood or something.....Is that the vibe you were going for with the music? Like I have all my descriptions for music hahaha
@@KrisBryant99 I am simultaneously working on writing my story, so what you’re saying makes sense. Thanks. Most of the songs we do are songs I truly love or identify with.
I love her voice. She was a beautiful singer. When their music stopped it made me sad. I think to record companies women can only front a band if they wear very little. She's great.
i'm saying this not just for musicians kind of but for anyone who achieves fame. It can ruin and kill people. oh that record company crap is part of it. Examples are ubiquitous. RV made fine music and should be appreciated and compensated at appropriate levels.
😊 no disrespect Deborah You're a beautiful woman it had nothing to do with your looks and everything to do with your weight. You need to stop lying to yourself. All you had to do was love yourself and take care of yourself and your music career would have been different.
Thanks for the great interview, wondered what become of the group... although wouldn't exactly say they weren't commercially successful back in the 80's, their EP, "Never Say Never" sold millions of copies world wide, and their follow up album, 'It's A Condition' also was right up there in popularity amongst the new wave / post-punk fans which was a huge scene back in the day... P.S. "Never Say Never" and "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing), the latter, "became a Top 40 pop single... showing that their fan base grew wider as they gained popularity.. also featured in quite a few film scores

"Never say Never" was an anthem for my friends and I during university. If influence and joy matter, then Romeo Void was wildly successful.

Thank you for making our teenagers years better back in the 80s. Your music and image were the epytome of coolnes.
@@armandomendoza9028 Thank you. It was my pleasure. I felt like we were making the music I wanted to listen to.
Love Debra's voice and I miss this band. ❤
12 years old, KROQ Los Angeles, "Never Say Never" hit the airwaves and it was just perfect. I loved this era of experimental music and expression.
OMG - my teenage crush is still so CUUUUTE! I love this kickass lady.
IKR?! I remember back in the day, being a young teen and seeing the band thinking "I guess I like big girls" 🤣

I’m glad she made a point of stating she’s been sober for 27 years, and that has helped her stay healthy and maintain her voice.
I love Romeo Void and I have Debora's first solo album. Love her music!
...I met her backstage at the Kabuki Theater 1984/ Bay Area..a friend worked for the band...she was really cool/nice! Love Romeo Void < 3
This song endures !!!!
Its like seeing a old friend bring back a lot of memories thanks for the wayback experience 😊
Great interview, love your music.
Great interview. It’s sad about all the money issues with these labels. Like she said, “it’s a crime” what a lovely, wonderful and humble woman. Wow
She is beautiful!

Still pay my RV records, and all my other records from that era. The messages mattered, and still resonate.

Girl in trouble is awesome loud
Th3 spirit is more important
Than the look
The light more beautiful
Than shame
The song
Aided my joy
Romeo Void
Made me glow
