My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

I buy, sell, and flip small engine stuff myself. I hoard parts from all the machines I get that aren't worth fixing. A couple of years ago I was able to build a Troy Bilt riding mower completely from scratch out of my parts stash, and it is 100% factory correct. Hoarding pays.

It is always nice to see parts getting repurposed rather than thrown away. I have parted out a lot of small equipment online over the years. I use to fix them up to sell but I learned it’s so much easier and more potential profit to just part out. Some of the prices for oem parts are absurd so used is the next best thing for most people. Well, the oil in the gas tank guy actually unknowingly did a good thing in a way. If you’re going to store a two stroke for over a year like that, putting oil in the carb will keep everything inside good, as long as you recall doing it two years later and remember to drain it out.

      Mike,
Good luck to you. It's fun for me to work on small equipment/engines. I just finished working on a 2005 John Deere 145 mower it has a 22 horsepower V twin engine. The complaint was the battery would die before they got their yard cut. I checked the alternator output and it was very low put a new alternator on and it didn't do any better, less than 13 volts. I unplugged the alternator ( it has 2 wires that connect to the voltage regulator) it would only put out 12-13 volts AC. I reved the engine over the governor speed and it started charging at 32-36 volts AC I hooked the alternator back to the voltage regulator and now it's putting out 13.6 volts DC so the battery will stay charged now. I have a lot more work to do, but the no charge, was the most important. Why sharpen the blades when the mower won't run?
It can be fun and make a few bucks as well. Again good luck to you Sir.

I was noticing that my mower wasn't filling the catcher properly as it was half filling and leaving clipping behind so i cleaned the mower body and sorted the blades ! still very little change . Well it turned out ( I discovered ) that the catcher being made from a hard plastic it has small vents with a filtering grill on the inside that if not cleaned regularly(specially after wet or damp mowing ) clogs and won't vent and creating a air lock affect which interrupts the air flow which helps carries the clipping into the back of the catcher . I wonder how many others have had this issue ,even cloth catchers . I enjoy your videos ! keep it going ... In more ways than one lol

This year I couldn't get it started no matter what so I took it to a Stihl dealer. Their answer was it's flooded and ran good for them. After I continued having the problem I took it to a second dealer. They said all it needed was a bit of adjustment and I went through starting (warmed) with them. After a few days I was back again to not starting. After watching some of your videos I decided to check the coil. I didn't have a spark plug tester but couldn't see any spark when I grounded the plug. I ordered a new coil on Amazon and thanks to you had no problem installing it. I had put away my brand new Stihl Farm Boss Super with full fuel & bar oil and got to work bucking up firewood Saturday morning. After the first refueling & topping off the bar oil I noticed it took a couple of pulls to start my saw. It was a bit sluggish but still cut OK. About 3/4 through the tank of fuel I realized what I had done. I needed some diesel for part cleaning and used one of my saw-gas cans to hold it. THAT was now in my saw! I called my dealer, told them what I had done and asked what damage was expected. He told me it happens more often than you think and that diesel (pre low sulfur version) has some lubrication qualities and that I should just replace it with fresh gas and keep on working. The saw is still running fine 20 years later.

OOPS - I have been known to start my saw without first removing the plastic bar/chain protector. It's getting a bit chewed up! Funny how well the saw runs with the guard on it!

I've had my 150bt since 2011. It's been flawless. I recently replaced the fuel lines and grommet. But if the coil ever fails I'll just trash it or part it out. I can't believe how expensive replacement parts have become!

You would do your body (mostly shoulder) a big favor by retraining yourself to adjust your pull. You short stroke it to engage the starter which is great. But then you slack your arm every time which reverses what you just did by engaging the starter. making you yank everything through the engagement causing a slight jerking to occur every time you pull. I submit that you relearn your pull to begin right from the engagement of the starter. So, short pull it until the moment of engagement then continue your main pull directly from that point.

This is very smart. Buying fixer uppers is so 10 years ago. The busted one might have critical repair parts worth more than the flipper model. Then you gotta deal with cheapskates. It was really hot that day. Lol dont settle for less when you already tried to be reasonable.

Yea your right as always! But I got tickled when you showed bar oil in gas tank. Most likely whomever fuel it up did put gas in the oil side. But it leaked out by the time you received it. John Q Public can make life either fun are questionable.

My little "oops" was when I sharpened the chain on one of my saws then decided to flip the bar , I left the chain on the bar and did the flip , put it all back together and then realised , that makes the chain back to front . Pull it apart again , remove chain , put it back right way , no harm done , lesson learned ;-)

I remember old timers used to fill fuel tanks with oil and pull the starter to get the oil in everything when they knew it was going to be stored for a long time... this was back in the 50's, 60's, 70's... (it worked) but I don't remember why as it was B4 ethanol.

i just got a Husqvarna 150bt it it brand new never been run other than a factory starting from lowes and the customers that come in pretty much parted it out on the shelf from the tubes to the air filter and gasket to the fuel lines and fuel cap an estimated 115 dollar repair in just parts they would have taken the engine if they could said to my self these customers are going to make me love them.

Hiii, hmmmm ... I made the same mistake with my 1998 Jonsered 2045 Turbo chainsaw ! I filled baroil in the fueltank in a hurry, but didnt try to start it ,because I realized what I just did 😆... this saw has no primerbulb, so I emptied the tank and added new correct fuel... It started after some pulls and was smoking like an old dieselengine for a while ... These days this saw gets a full tune up with new clutch, sprocket, fuelfilter, oil pump parts ( bar oil leak ), spark plug, bar and chain before my firewood season starts... just got some carburettor parts in my mailbox too which I will look into if I cant adjust the carburettor properly ! Then I hope it will run fine for a long time !

Thanks for the explanations and a view into daily shop life! Just a quick question for you: are the Husqi's parts that expensive because of import and shipping costs or is there simply a general tendency to rip people off in the market for maintenance parts? Anyone with the answer, feel free to chime in. As always, thanks for your honest videos and straight-forward content!

Clearly manufacturers want consumers to buy new units rather than fix small problems with their old ones. That blower purchased in pieces would cost $1575 plus shipping and tax.
The Chinese are taking advantage of this strategy by offering knock off parts at a fraction of the cost.

    • @mikewatson4644
      @mikewatson4644 Před rokem +1

All replacement parts tend to be expensive unless they are something very common or fit lots of machines. They are sold 1 at a time, often ordered 1 at a time. Very expensive process when compared to making complete new units on an assembly line where they might be making hundreds or thousands in a run. It's not a ripoff, just the economics of how things happen.

probably the most common thing i seen was people pulling the chain cover off with the chainbreak on. it wouldnt come off so a light pry then they cant figure why it wont go back on. bad thing is a little over half the husqvarnas the lever is not part of the chain cover. the one clutch tool worked on most, the others i made one from an old socket with a grinder and some patience
