- The Mack is a 1973 American blaxploitation film directed by California native Michael Campus, starring Max Julien and Richard Pryor. The film also stars Oscar-nominee Juanita Moore and Tony-nominated actor Dick Anthony Williams. Filmed in Oakland, California the movie follows the rise and fall of Goldie. After returning home from a 5-year prison sentence, he returns home to find his brother involved in Black nationalism. Goldie decides to take an alternative path, striving to become the city's biggest pimp.
Though reviews were less than favorable upon initial release, The Mack is considered by many critics to be the best entry in its genre. The film is often categorized as blaxploitation, but Michael Campus, Max Julien, and others involved in its production have argued that the genre label oversimplifies the film.
The film's soundtrack was recorded by Motown artist Willie Hutch.
Production
According to director Michael Campus, the original script for the film was written on prison toilet paper by Bobby Poole, an inmate at San Quentin. While staying in Oakland for two months, Campus met Frank Ward, a real pimp and drug dealer from Oakland. Max Julien's character of Goldie is based upon him. In order to shoot the movie, Campus needed Ward's permission, because many scenes were filmed in his territory. In exchange for his guidance and protection, Campus put Ward in the film. All of the homeless people, junkies, pimps and women in the film were supplied by Frank Ward.
Although Campus had Ward's protection, the film was also in Black Panther territory. During filming, Black Panther party members would throw bottles and trash cans from rooftops. In order for filming to run smoothly, an additional deal had to be made with Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, who were then put in charge of providing extras for the film. About halfway through the production of the film, Frank Ward was shot and killed while in his Rolls Royce. There was speculation that the Black Panthers were responsible for Ward's death, and the filmmakers and cast relocated to safer areas for filming. Despite the tension, the film's opening was shot in Oakland with all of the proceeds going to the Black Panthers' breakfast program.
Reception
The film was screened in theaters in only about 20 mostly black communities. Distributors avoided theaters in predominantly white neighborhoods due to a belief the film would do better in black areas. Despite its low distribution, director Michael Campus has noted that the film outgrossed The Godfather in the cities in which it played.
Alternate score
In its original 1973 release by Cinerama Releasing and its 1978 reissue by AIP, The Mack featured a score by Willie Hutch, an artist and producer for Motown Records. In 1983, Producers Distributing Corporation reissued the film to capitalize on the resurgent popularity of Richard Pryor and Roger Mosley, who was co-starring on the hit TV series Magnum P.I.). PDC commissioned a new score by Alan Silvestri featuring vocals by Gene McDaniels. The reissue poster advertised a soundtrack release on Posh Boy Records, but the album was released on the ALA Enterprises label; it is now out of print and highly collectible. To differentiate it from the original score, fans have referred to it as "The Mack and His Pack," based on a catch phrase used on the reissue poster. When the film was initially licensed to Embassy Pictures for home video, it included the Silvestri score. The New Line DVD release restored the original Willie Hutch score to the film.

The Mack is forever legendary

@LEWIS JONES - which pimp was lewis jones? or was he a pimp?
Willie Hutch didn’t get enough credit for the soundtrack for the Mack.
Right there with Superfly soundtrack 2 me
I agree my totally
He didn't
Rap music took from these jewels and crowned what is now still relevant in the top charts today
💯
The old man who introduced Goldie to the pimp game name was Paul Harris. A accomplished actor in his own right.
Facts... 💯💯
Paul Harris played a pimp in Truck Turner!
Q
Ha ha ha ha ha.
he also played Gator in Truck Turner and one of Kansas City Mack partners in Let's do it again.
My dad named me Max Julien because he was so into this era. I now have 2 sons that one is named Max and the other is named Julian.
Also I never understood why Willie Hutch doesn’t get the recognition like other musicians from the era.
I agree with you his music was Epic 🔥🔥🔥🔥
He got his just due as a composer. He scored The Mack. Foxy Brown and he did The Last Dragon. Just the competition in that era & he stayed with Motown too long. Berry Gordy only cared for certain people on that label
Dad naming you, “Max Julien” is pretty cool.
Beautiful names Brother 🖤

This is my absolute favorite movie of all time, and I have watched it countless times.
Growing up in DC as a young kid, seeing the homie Max on the big screen and then turn around and see him in the mall in the city made me believe anything is possible if I put my mind to it
what year was that 70's? or recently?, I would have like to seen him in his hay days, when he was "Fine as "fuk", not now, too old and tired, like the rest of us from the 70's...lol..😂😂😂
I remember my mother taking me and my brother to see this movie as a kid. It was crowded like never before for this movie.
How old were you???? I don't think my mom would ever take me a child to see that movie ...it's my favorite though
R.I.P to the legendary Max Julien. The Mack has made him a household name and he will never be forgotten.
The soundtrack was so dope. I was told my great uncle was a pimp. He had some of the nicest suits that took from my grand mother. They were old and in excellent condition..
I’m so blessed I was around to witness this era!!
@Bruno Moterello I was still a kid in the 70s I probably was around 13 or 14 when this movie came out...it seem cool but that life style eventually came to a end if you wasn’t built for it just like any other hustle!
anyone lucky enough to be alive during the early 1970s is a legend!

Remember how all the brothers wanted to become pimps back in the day, when this movie came out? they were "popcorn pimps", like "pretty tony" said in the movie. (may he rest in peace). he said,' ur a rest haven for hoes." Stay outta grown folks conversations.". Them brotha's/ Actors, back in the day, played the hell out that movie. Back in the day you saw 2 movies for the price of one. and could pay one price and stay all day, which is what i did over and over again. I miss those day, lazy crazy peaceful days...smdh..🙄🙄😬😬
@@mrs.berniemadoff3324 Right and crazy part for me my father took me and my brothers to that one and Shaft lol
I hope people will remember Max Julien's contributions. I was born and raised in Oakland but lived in another state & city when this movie came out. The scene at the pool hall was near my parent's home (now condominiums). Brings back a lot of memories.

I'm from North Oakland. I was 11 years old when they filmed the Mack me and my 5 brothers snuck into the theater to see the Mack and Coffy at Eastmont Mall in east Oakland in 1974.
That's a conquencedence! I also grew up in North Oakland on this street called Aileen Street! Went to Santa Fe Elementary, Claremont Junior High School and graduated from Oakland Tech in 1981! I'm a movie buff and grew up watching all these great flicks: The Mack, SuperFly, Black Caesar, Sparkle, Coffy, Foxy Brown, Truck Turner, Cleopatra Jones! But my all time favorite flick back then was J.D.'s Revenge! Use to go to the Roxie, The Lux and the Eastmont Cinemas! We probably know each other by face! Small world! Nuff Said!
Damn, I was looking all over for this film on Roku TV all this weekend and its unavailable and I would have never thought that he'd die during my search. I have it on VHS. Rest in peace, Max.
Max Julien was a deep brother off screen
REst in power max u are the reason anyone who came from this era and was born and raised during this time got to witness some of the greatest black films , actors , music tv etc.... ever !!!! i'm glad i was born then i came up on the best .

Wow. I saw The Mack when I was a kid. I did not know the history behind it until now. I always remembered Max Julien as the star just like I remember Richard Roundtree as Shaft and Ron O'Neal as Super Fly and of course Pam Greer as Coffy. I actually saw Pam Greer and Willie Hutch once when they came to the Lincoln movie Theater in Washington DC for a premier. I waited in the rain for them. This was way back in the day so no cell phone camera. I just have my memory which is good enough. :)
I like that.
We all started wherein Mack hats and Superfly, coats.to school, were the Mack.
Wow it's good to know the truth about the Movie I was a teen yongsta when I saw the movie and good to hear about the Black Panthers that tried to help our people for the righteousness not to destroy themselves...
I love movies from this time period.
So do I.
The behind the scenes documentary about this movie to me is better than the movie itself because you learn about the ward brothers because they were all in the movie and they made the script come alive
PS- Thank you to all who participated in the creation process and delivery of this epic creation. As well as the soundtrack, Brother Huey Newton, Mr. Ward, Brothers' Max Julien, Willie Hutch, Richard Pryor and a host of equally great sisters and brothers.
Thank you, all endearingly and forevermore.
Good gracious the actress who played China Doll😍 right now !!!!
I have the DVD of The Mack. I watch it a couple times a year. Now that I know how "real and raw" the creation of it was, I have more and a better appreciation for the story. GREAT documentary! 👍🏽👍🏽

Max Julien was born January 1st 1945, and there is absolutely no evidence that he ever did drugs, he was a classical Actor, he also designed clothes for some of the Rappers he has always been and still is highly intelligent, he is married to former Actress Annabella Chavers and to me he looks pretty good for his age, love the movie, love this documentary, love me some Max Julien ❤️💯

YES. LOVE SOME MAX IT WAS A GUY AT MY HIGH SCHOOL BACK IN THE DAY WHEN THIS MOVIE CAME OUT LOOK JUST LIKE HIM I MEAN EXACTLY A CLONE OF HIM .
That's the most I've learned about Max Julian.. My mother took me to see the Mack, I was no more than 10 years old. Even at 10 years old I thought that he good looking.
I knew men like this. I used to see them when I left school. I watched them film Superfly in my neighborhood. I saw the players balls in Harlem. I went to thx Jewel box review at the Apollo theatre. Even the conversation is real slang that was used during that time. This whole entire movie was true to life. The drugs scenes were so real.
They say as soon as the black man got off the plantation, he started pumping us out.
I am from Oakland, California. I knew several people who were in this movie . The kid who was in the scene who said he wanted to be like Goldie is now a bus driver for Muni. The guy in the barbershop scene who had on purple is a pastor of a church now and the club scene with the soul group who wore blue the lead singer is my best friends father I think the group name was The Moments .
Muni?

Max Julien is of Native American descent he favors and sounds like my father. This entire Musical score is stellar. I knew Frank Ward was real and not a fictional person.
KARAMELDREEM- NO HE IS NOT, MAYBE HALF OR A QUARTER, BUT NOWHERE DOES IT SAY, HE IS NATIVE AMERICAN. FACT CHECK 1ST...SMFH
Mrs. Bernie Madoff descent means ancestry as well so fact check on you, Boo-Yow!
I have ALWAYS said that about Max Julien as well. As a matter of fact the OLDER he got the MORE APPARENT it became. If anyone disagrees, then just look at his Native American features. Many African Americans are mixed with Native American ancestry. I still have a book that I purchased in the 90's titled "BLACK INDIANS" written by William Loren Katz who explained the relationship between the two groups. I have Cherokee ancestry in my family and I can still see the features of Native Americans in many of my African American family members. Most groups of Native Americans refuse to acknowledge this and years ago on the news I saw a tribe who wanted to cut all ties with their African American brothers and sisters. I cannot remember which tribe though. RIP Max Julien.
Beautiful Man..it was just something about him..his face..he really owned this film. Let's not forget his movie Thomasina and Bushrod..also a classic. RIP.. the Mack will always be a classic film.
I've seen this movie more times than I can count. My two favorites lines: When Goldie is talking to Slim in the bar reflecting on how women would risk their lives on the street to get her Pimp's money and he tells Slim, "Oh, I'm not talking about me; I'm talking about those other dudes". And when Pretty tony loses his girl to Goldie in the pool hall and his only retort to Goldie was "You ain't no pimp; you're a rest haven for hoes"
"You a car thief! A CAR THIEF!!!"
I am truly appreciative for the explanations provided in this commentary.
R.I.P the legend !!!
Just a classical film will always be a historical movie that I still watch i. 2021
So many good films and music from that era
INCREDIBLE!!! This documentary on the Mack was so fucking GREAT!!! Did you hear the rap, lingo, the lines they were saying?!!! Some legendary quotes in the history cinematography! The dissing of the cops just how they put words and statements together was 1,000 percent on point. Scarface and the Godfather was good but, I'm not not Cuban, or Italian. The Mack is where it's At because I'm Black, and that a Fact!!! 👊🏿✌🏿
The best Movie ever!!! I love this documentary thank you. It was right timi g we needed this whatever they said about it it was needed.
Keep it real baby!😏
My favorite blaxploitation
Such a great movie. SUPERFLY is still my favorite movie but the Mack is high on my list.
The Mack was the 1st and one of the best 70,s movie I saw in ST Petersburg FL and Saw it over and over again. My mother lived in Oakland CA at the time. The first time I went to the State Theater.I fell in love with him and his wife and knowing that my mom ❤️ lived in the same city and state that I plan to go one day.🤗 well I made the trip and I have been here since 1985.Max Julian, I will keep you in my thoughts and smile on the fact that you through this ❤️ for the movie and my mom and you help me grow up with life.
I remember meeting him as a kid he lived across the street from my aunt he was a cool cat rest well
The story of Goldie is about my friend Fahali Wards daddy Frank Ward and his brother Tony Ward from Louisiana who migrated to Oakland in the 50's and grew to be the biggest gangster in Oakland. Unfortunately my friend daddy didn't see his movie made because Fahali's daddy Frank was murdered right before the movie The Mack premiered in February 1973, he died at the young age of 33 years old. The question is who murdered my friends father Frank Ward ? Well word on the streets in the early 70's it was allegedly the Black Panthers!!!! Yes, Huey Newton and Bobby Seals are possibly responsible for my friends father death!!! I watched this movie being made as a child in Oakland and I watched my friend Fahali Ward sad everyday not knowing his daddy Frank, but Frank left his son a 1972 silver and grey Rose Royce I used to look at almost everyday. There is more evidence that point to the Black Panthers pertaining Frank Wards death but you'll have to wait until my book comes out about the city of Oakland. I will be talking about the Black migrants who left the south after World War II to become long shore men in Oakland to the introduction of Lesane Crooks aka Tupac Shakur!!!
The behind the scenes and production is just as good the movie it self.
Rest In Paradise Max Julien 💖
This movie holds a special place in my heart, an integral part of my child hood. RIP Max Julian, a true black pioneer.

Now I gotta pull out my dvd and watch this classic AGAIN
In 1968 I entered this world..and this movie mimicked my surroundings.
I saw this movie when I was a teen. I never knew that when I grew up. I would actually be in Oakland. I took messages for the Fouche Hudson Funeral Home. The Sneaky Fox waz on my bus route!! Wow! Rest easy Max Julien!!!
If you don't mind me asking what street in Oakland was the Sneaky Fox Located I always wanted to do a filming location video for my channel.
Just as Ron O' Neal was the perfect actor to play Priest in "Superfly", Max Julian was the perfect actor to play Goldie in "The Mack." They both infused their characters with an incredible blend of power and charisma along with an underlying vulnerability. These outstanding lead performances are why these films still resonate today with younger audiences.
I love this I wish the game was still golden!
This was a huge, the music, the acring. Classic, classic..
