A history of the Ohio Players out of Dayton, Ohio (The Funk Capitol ) and part of Ohio's Funk History. Credits: tvOne.
The Ohio Players are one of the most successful funk outfits of all time, scoring monster crossover hits in the 1970s like "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster." They took funk into uncharted territory, bringing a jazzy, free form feel to chart-toppers like "Skin Tight," "Heaven Must Be Like This," and "Sweet Sticky Thing." Along the way, The Players - with monikers like Sugarfoot, Diamond, and Rock- lived up to their names, with super-sexy album covers that got nearly as much attention as their songs, and by lifestyle excesses that led to a major drug bust. Their notoriety was so extreme that the group was rumored to have killed someone during a recording session with the dying screams mixed into the grooves of a song.

Ohio Players were an American funk band, most popular in the 1970s. They are best known for their songs "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster"; as well as for their erotic album covers that featured nude or nearly nude women. Many of the women were models featured in Playboy.
The singles "Funky Worm", "Skin Tight", "Fire", and "Love Rollercoaster"; as well as their albums Skin Tight, Fire, and Honey, were awarded Gold certifications. On August 17, 2013, Ohio Players were inducted into the inaugural class of the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame that took place at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.

The 70’s were, (musically) unparalleled. What a great time to be alive. What we now need is a “Unsung” episode of
Cameo.
Slave "Unsung"!
Ohio Players always had a sprinkling of JAZZ in their Funk. They will always be one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES.
When I play the sounds of the Ohio Players I feel like a young man and arthritis leaves my body. They bring me Joy of life.
when i hear this song now i can totally relate to Pain is in my heart tearing me apart. Im a chocolate female 60/y/o n its so true for me. 11-6-21
Awesome band 👍🏻
@lamascotapan😂😂
I don't think a higher compliment could possibly be made! That's about as good as it gets Brother!
Beautiful. Keep dancing young man!
How I wish that this type of band and music was still around. Thank God for the great musical legacy the Ohio Players left us with. They were a premiere group in my opinion.
I loved some Ohio Players. They were the bomb...
You are so right! I remember when they were on the Midnight Special!
And the look and image too. Never to return
I think the Ohio players should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame
Man, I've been saying that for Decades.
When you look at classic songs, influence, style they should definitely be there. Their music was part of the American soundtrack back in the 70's.
Unquestionably!
They're not ??!!!
So true
This is the music that I came up on. I really enjoyed this documentary. I am happy to hear this music 🎶. God bless you all.
Album covers were LEGENDARY
That and sexy
Back then the album cover said everything about the music songs and the greatness of the band.
It was a special time in life to be a part of the 70’s✌🏾❤️✊🏾
My parents would tape them up.
John, they show as hell were.
Fact.. they are etched in the brain
I love Sugarfoot no matter where the story comes from. 2021 still in love with the Ohio Players.
Right. . 👌💯💯💯💯🎤
Yes
Mee tóo.
Me too. He was fun to party with.
I Love SF
I mean between EW&F and the Ohio Players, how many hits did each have? They both had a huge impact on popular music across the board. LEGENDARY! Both bands are amazing!
As a teen in the 70s those were my Groups namely EWF and TOP. It's was a great era to have BarKays, Commodores Brass Construction etc ..
@@erinmeggik391 🙌🏾🙌🏾💯
My first two record albums I bought when I was a kid in 1975 was Honey by The Ohio Players and Gratitude by Earth, Wind & Fire! That’s how potent my favorite bands were at that time. The music was phenomenal.
That Last Days and Time album by EW&F was 🔥🔥🔥 too.
I love this. Billy Beck and I went from 2nd grade all of the way to graduate together. So proud of Billy.☺️ Janet A.
The Ohio Players were in a league all by themselves. Especially when James "Diamond" Williams (their sensational drummer- man listen to that foot drum) joined them and they proceeded in putting together 3 blockbuster albums in a row with "Skin Tight", "Fire", and Honey!" Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner with the double-neck guitar and that slanted fro (not to mention the greatest of funk voices)! These dudes were just simply TOO COOL. No one quite like them. But hey, no mention of "I Want To Be Free!" Come on now - to this day, I never could get enough of that one.
When black music met something compared to the trash out there now the players play real instruments back then wasn't about pushing a button and getting a sound that sound like a instrument yeah...right
'Say it brother...'
Love the group! Did anyone ever see Sugarfoot play the other neck on the guitar? I didn't. Not a criticism, I just wondered if it sounded different?
😊👍🎺🎸🎷🎷🎸
@Frank From L.A. Make that when both Diamond and William “Billy” Beck joined.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should call their name The Ohio Player's music is FIRE!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I loved this group. I was in college going to house parties and listening fo this group. They were great. Loved their album covers too. I’m 70 but I can still dance to their music.
I freaking loved Ohio Player as a kid in the 70's. What a great band. Are they in the rock and roll hall of Fame yet?
Me too
They should Be!
Lets make an petition
Darren Miller ,if they're not they definitely should BE😁💜The sound tracks of my youth❣️Back when Music was Music🎶🎼🎶🎷🎸🎺
These were the days when a person had to have real talent musically. I will always have love for the Ohio players.
Yes !!!!! You said it all🎷🎸🎺🎷🎷🎷🎸
This documentary got me all funk up 😱 🎸🎷🎺
💯💯
Wow! Who would have known that this band went thru this hell...
Facts; they did it for the love of the music back then
This is who Cameo got they're style from
THE OHIO PLAYER'S FOREVER WILL NEVER DIE LOVE Y'ALL
The are ageless! Many younger musicians used their musical innovations!
Since i first heard the Ohio Players (i was maybe 5) I LOVED their music - my Dad played them a lot. The album covers troubled me bit as a young lady, but i would still sneak and play them. I saw them perform a few times as an adult; I wish I had seen them more. Some of their songs are MASTERPIECES of jazz infused funk, and their musicianship was off the charts. Best horn riffs ever, EWF included. They deserve more credit and recognition.
P
When I was a little kid with my mom at the record store, I would always run to The "O" section to see the Ohio Players album covers and my mom would yell at me to put them down.
I bet it was that Honey album! Bad boy! Lol
Was it the Fire or Honey Album?
@@thetayoung242 yes they had some explicit album covers I remember my mom had three of them the one with the honey on the girl maybe the pain album and there was another picture of a woman's nipples showing through her top .
@@carwashconnoisseur7216 My mom had the one with the girl's nipples showing I went through her record collection.
@@thetayoung242 she was stuck to the floor that honey was so thick and gooey .
I remember having to buy the Ohio Players albums when I was 12 to 15 years old and keeping them in the garage then sneaking them into my bedroom after my parents went to bed unwrapping the album and then adding it to my rotation of EWF, Commodores, Funkadelic- Parliament, Isley Bros, Ronnie Laws, Chi Lites, Kool n the Gang and so on and so forth!
Omg for those of us in our 60’s and older; we grew up with the best music and probably the best time anyone could ever imagine!
Nothing but the truth. Love my era ❤
@@cmarie6157 OUR ERA! ❤️
This shows the importance of financial literacy . Paying taxes, saving money, buying real estate, not buying excessively, etc. They should never been homeless after all their success
Be quiet. Put up your Financials. You probably poor
You are absolutely right! Not being financially responsible causes financial issues that doesn't have to be.
You have to keep these three letters happy IRS.
Exactly
What does "financial literacy" mean in a nation that is designed to confiscate black wealth?
Every group applied distinctively was artistically phenomenally, and back then, you couldn’t get in the studio without measure of talent.
One of my bands (through the years) got to open a show for these guys. The bass player graciously let me use his amp. He seemed genuinely glad to help me out. Their music was tough, world-class, and super funky. Great memory. Sugar blew my mind on guitar. Yeah.
Just LOVE this documentary.
Just LOVE The Ohio Players...🥰😍🤩!!!
In 1983, I had an Oldsmobile Omega with an 8 track tape. My 1st tape was "Funky Worm"
The Ohio Players will always be loved and never be forgotten thank you much love from Cleveland Ohio
I remember seeing them in DC in the 70s. They were outstanding! Yes...They had some creative album covers. Love the song, "The Funky Worm."
This was the greatest band ever assembled in music history. Idc what anyone says. Nobody sounded like them or played like them. Greatest of all times. The Ohio Players🎙 🎸🎹🎺🥁🎵🎼🎶🎵🎵
Got that right! They were da shit! Nuff Said!
They were Untouchable and Funkalicious! Too much, tight and undammforgetable! Besides their funk music, their album covers were Untouchable! Nuff Said!
Yes!!!!
It was real music funk soul I love that band I'm old school I don't listen to the garbage out there now....you don't see black bands with horns any more I miss that!😊🎷👍🎺🎷
Not the greatest but they were up there!
those were the days when every song on the album was good
I was so blessed to grow up in Dayton Ohio in the 70's and be a part of all of this. Dayton will always be the Land of FUNGK.
Never been to Dayton but born and raised in Ohio...we felt the Funk in "small town" NE Ohio....I think it was something in the air.

Skin tight and the worm was the jam!!
The Ohio players will never die..
THESES GUYS PUT US ON THE MAPS🗽
Sugar Foot mentioned in this documentary, that he wants the Ohio Players to be mentioned right beside Earth Wind & Fire, in terms of their legacy within the music industry. As far as I'm concerned, The Ohio Players has earned their rightful place to be mentioned right beside EW&F, as one of the greatest R&B bands in music history! RIPSUGARFOOT!
You're right! But, there's no need to compare them, both were astounding in their own right & sound.
Growing up listening to both groups, The Ohio Players were right there side by side in greatness with EW&F
👍🎶👍👍👍🎸🎸🎺🎷🎷
Naw. Different genre.
@ Sixers five, I remember when.
The Ohio Players played it.
The Ohio Players pushed it.
Coming to ya from the D.
Motown. They earned their place.
I just watched it and I don't think it was Sugar Foot that said that. It was a really weird out of place comparison. Really out of nowhere suddenly this guy, whoever he is makes that statement. Apples to Oranges.
One of the first albums that my uncle bought for me was the Ohio Players. Rest In Beats Ralph "Pee Wee" Middlebrooks, Clarence "Satch" Satchel, Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, Walter " Junie" Morrison, and Marshall "Rock" Jones.
So they all died in the group

I didn't know about their original songs like Pain, and the others, but when I heard about the Ohio Players was about 1975, and I loved this group, absolutely. My favorites were, Skin Tight, Heaven must be like this, FIRE, Sweet Sticky thing, and Love Rollercoaster. FIRE was everybody's all time favorite. Like Stevie said, it was smoking hot.
I just want to thank them, for those incredible songs they made.✌🏽
That's because you're not a true fan, but a Johnny come lately.... LOL just kidding
Sweet Sticky Thing takes me to another place!! 😆😆😆
@@sharonedge9434 Don't I know that. Lol.
IF IT'S STEVIE Approved Y.O U KNOW it was a HIT!
Those album covers shaped my childhood! The Ohio Players made some stone cold grooves.
I used to hear them practice some Saturdays in a warehouse on the corner of Fairport and Hillcrest . And around the corner and down Salem Ave Roger and Zapp had a studio .
As good as they were back in the day tell me this : Why aren't they in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame ?
Whose going to be the 1st ones to induct them ?
I would if I could . Sugarfoot used to go and see the battle of the bands at Island Park in the summertime .
I sure do miss these brothers .
R.I.P. to the funksters that didn't make it to this point . Dayton used to be the place to be once upon a time .
Grew up on the Ohio Players music 🎶🎵 and they were my favorite group back in them days and always! I remember the "Love Rollercoaster" rumor OMG 😅🤣😂. Had many neighborhood debates about who was the best band between Ohio Players & Earth, Wind & Fire. I was always down with my Boys from O-H-I-O!
It's a tragedy that they're not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Damn shame 🤬
A full, funky, jazzy, sound with the craziest vocals. Skin tight, Fire and Sweet sticky thing, the Ohio players were the bomb.
The Ohio Players were one of my favorite groups from the seventies. Luckily, I did get to see them perform. My favorites are Love Rollercoaster, Heaven Must Be Like This and Skin Tight.
💒CAN'T FOREVER FORGET THEM😍
Fire 😛
I went to a concert at Austin Peay to See Wild Cherry, Average White Band and Ohio Players.
These guys literally made my life a happy one! I still play their music on my 💿, and even my old vinyls from vintage flavor! I love you guys! Thanks for sharing your greatness!
Who’s still listening to their classics?
On high volume?
Reminiscing bout them good old day?
Mid summer 2021🙋🏽♀️
Ohio Players were one of the first funk groups to catch my attention. The album cover images and the heavy sound with true musicianship, it was all good. Whereas PFunk subject material was often fantastical, the Players were speaking on everyday realities. Subsequently, they felt authentic. From "Pain" to "Angel", everything they made was solid. Not much after that, but they left an indelable mark nonetheless.
All praise is due to the creator of the black man
That would be....God
Long overdue is a documentary about Ohio Funk, period! With so many legendary bands, from that era, gone unsung.
They were the very First artist I saw in concert, I was in the 9th grade!!! My dudes for real, sugar foooot!!! 1976, still listening to them in 2021😄😂😂, this is Music!!!
Its a sin that they are not in that R & R Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The Ohio Players are Ohio natives. They've sold a lot records a lot of music. They're known the world over. Wolfman Jacks favorite band. The Ohio Players. Catch em on the Midnight Special.
This was one of the BEST Unsung episodes ever!!!
Love these guys! Super talented
This is so heart breaking 💔
These guys were masters.
I must admit, I bought "Honey" for the album cover.
But I did love the music.
Sugarfoof started that that trademark funk inflection in his singing, with that famous OOOWWWW!. After that nearly every band started imitating him, from Maurice White,Lionel Richie,Walter Orange of the Commodores, Michael Cooper, and that lead singer of the Barkays. OHIO PLAYERS had some of the most beautiful sexiest Black women on those album covers. It was like getting a ebony centerfold, in addition to that great music inside.
I remember having Funky Worm on a K-tel record as a young music scholar. That was an underrated little jam. These days, I don't know anybody who doesn't love their sound. Skin Tight nearly gets overplayed it seems. Only Sugarfoot could rock that double-neck guitar and make it look so hip. Their legacy will continue to grow.
Back in the day when the album covers were a work of art and these guys at the time would beat everyone when it came to their album covers you would see the most beautiful women you could imagine.
HU You Know ❤ Seems like the Ohio Players were fire at Howard University in the 1970s. The Howard U Band would turn out with Skin Tight at the night games with lights in their instruments. Imagine its dark you would suddenly hear Skin Tight and see the lights then the band would march out almost in a run high kicks as the visiting band was seemingly played off the field the transitions were amazing so much fun everyone enjoyed it!❤❤❤😂😊😊
At NCA&T, NCCU🎉 and WSU too💋
I have been a fan every since I was a kid. OHP are one of my favorite groups of all times!
"Funky Worm" was the jam!
@Kimberly Huggins What in the world were you doing buying records in the THIRD GRADE?
@Kimberly Huggins I have the album.
Such great musicians--mixing jazz chops with funk for their own style. Hard work and skill. I miss the days of amazing organic music like this.
RIP OHP...well done!

When you talk about Funk. The Ohio Player's name is up at the top of the list.. Put them in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. They are from Ohio and they deserve it.
I worked security for the ohio players in the 90s they could not have been more polite. Put on an awesome show at our club and treated our staff with so much respect. I will never forget how great they were. 🙏👍💪🙏

that was my favorite OP song too. 11-6-21
Love their music. Of course Fire and Love Rollercoaster is part of my childhood memories.
Remember the old myth that a girl was killed on the Rollercoaster and you were supposed to be able to hear it in the song?
That rumor sold sooooo many records! I don't know who started it, but if it was a record exec, it was genius.

SUGARFOOT was the man and sound of the band no doubt
That comes along with having the right "front man" for your band. Their personality/charisma/talent either propels the band or tanks it! It's hard to believe Sugarfoot wasn't the first front man for them but I am so glad it came to be. He is truly iconic!!
The Ohio Players -- overall the greatest soul/funk/r & b cultural touchstone, institution, phenom -- EVERYTHING -- that has ever been or ever shall be -- and I'm from _Detroit,_ damnit!!
The 70s were a great time for soul/funk horn bands. Some more impactful than others, but all contributed to the everlasting grooves and memories created from that era. I cut my teeth mimicking the bass lines laid down by this and other groups I listened to during the time.
Man oh Man you did it with this one. I remember this band I am from Ohio, Matter of Cleveland . These men made it happened ,Yes there needs to be a reunion gig . If anyone can make that happen get the money bag ready cause they will deliver the fans,OK
