I think y’all are really missing the point of this show. It revolves around Emily’s love for poetry, not Emily’s love for sue. They were a bonus, but the story is Emily’s.
@@hannahdawidowicz9627 Well I'm sure they were happy at some points but they both had tragic lives as well as being alive at a time where they couldn't truly be together, so there was definitely no happy ending. Sue and Austin had an unhappy marriage that eventually ended with them being estranged from eachother after their youngest son, Gib, died. Whilst that was going on Emily became more and more of a loner, at some points not even leaving her room to see guests. She attended the funerals of her close family members by listening through the crack in her bedroom door whilst the services happened downstairs. We could guess now she probably suffered with agoraphobia and also hallucinations. Emily spent years taking on the running of the house after both her parents had strokes, as well as financial issues that meant they had no staff to help. Sue protected Emily's privacy the whole of her life, but even more so as she became more isolated, and was the one who prepared her body after Emily died slowly of what historians think was kidney failure in her 50s, so they did remain close. However, they were gay in the 19th century with both experiencing probable mental illness and facing the challenges of being a woman in a patriarchal society, as well as both of them experiencing unbelievable loss of close family and friends. I'm sure they were happy, but their lives and situations were dictated by other forces and they were never truly able to be together in the way Emily wanted in her poems.
I feel like the last words were very poignant. “Wait for me, I’m coming” she spent so much of her life in secret and the wider world not knowing her greatness. I feel like she’s talking to the future (us) because a lot of her poems were published after her death, this is what it means. She’s telling the world to wait for her because now we know her greatness. That how I interpreted it anyway..
@@HellfireClub242 I did think that, but she was in her fifty’s when she died so she could have seen herself in heaven when she she was younger. To me, I think that this is the world she created in her mind in her solitude. She saw the mermaids as companions
@@hannahshearman8108 I took account that the scene prior to the beach was evident. The scene where Emily was in her room, clearly going through the years. As you correctly stated, Emily spent nearly 20 years as a recluse before the end. But the reason I think this was her death is because of two reasons. One, the age of Emily. Yes she is younger but that was the age where her and Sue had the relationship. It unfortunately didn't happen in the last two decades. So for Emily the only thing apart from poetry that made her happy was Sue - when she was younger and at her happiest. Two, the mermaids. However I believe that the mermaids were Sirens (indication of death). And Emily spent a lot of time writing about death and immortality. For her , seeing them made her happy because Emily was ahead of her time. And seeing the Sirens was the end of her life but not her legacy.
The ocean represents Emily's mind/imagination/consciousness and the mermaids represent her future poems. She is rowing into the future that is full of hope and new experiences.
@@ashleytorngren1773 well in the show they only share her beginnings and not the next 25ish years of her life. So that’s what she is rowing towards. She is rowing towards her future poems and new experiences. Dickinson is like her superhero Origin story but doesn’t tell the full story. She lived a lot more life.
@@ashleytorngren1773 so it is actually a fact that Emily did not meet with General when he first came to meet her. So that’s why In the show she didn’t meet him on first meeting. Also Sue is part of a huge part of all of Emily’s new poems. I couldn’t tell but it is being said that the mermaid with the hot pink hair was actually Sue (Ella).
When I watched it, it felt kinda inconclusive. But then I remembered, this is not the end of Emily. This is just a part of her life and life goes on. The last episode centered around Emily’s passion for poetry, imagination, creativity, her mind. Her loved ones appreciating her, loving her and accepting her for who she is. I really really LOVE the pairing of Emily and Sue, but the show was not only about that (they had their last perfect romantic scene on the previous episode). That’s why the show is called DICKINSON, because her family was also very important to her. All of Emily’s context. Although, I would die to see an special episode or movie after this series 👀 lest ask Apple TV+ for one…
Episode 9 was abt wrapping Emily and Sue love story and it was beautiful. But it makes sense that the end of the show is abt Emily's poetry and how she found joy and meaning in her simple life through writing. The show is abt Emily as a poet and this is what it has to end on
I always wondered… How were they going to put a happy ending on this show, where the end of Emily’s life was so sad? But they did it. She’s sailing hopefully into her destiny. ☺️
Someone said that they don't like final episode much but i love it. The way Sue look up upstair where Emily was with satisfied eyes for the recognition of her work (as a poet). And the way Emily was afraid of Sue's jealous when she talked "how about Sue? Does she get mad at?" (When Mr. Higginsons came). Their behaviour talked much. Love them! But in real life, just hope them be best friends without shipping them as a couple is better, cause maybe it makes they keep distance, especially Hailee.
Actually, I understand that people don't like this episode, there were too many boxes open and unexplored. I wanted to see Emily struggling with putting the dress together, I wanted to see her interaction with Higginson, maybe I even wanted to see her growing old and Sue standing above her coffin, still as much in love with her as decades ago. Also, I never got to know if Maggie had luck with Higginson (she probably didn't but at least I wanted that plot thread closed). I think this kind of suffers from the Show Ending Hurry syndrome where they try to pack everything up too quickly (like in Lucifer, for example). They wasted two whole minutes on this scene, a scene that didn't make me feel anything but confusion. And it's probably a tangent from this topic but Vinnie's knitted cocoon served no purpose other than an attempt at humor, it had no base in her emotional state and was there just for the "Oh yeah, Emily's the crazy one..." moment. Also, that corset scene. I'd take like 20 points away for the complaints about "not being able to breathe". I know she was friends with Louisa May Alcott in the show (not in real life) but come on.
Fan thoughts on the rest of this finale episode, fair enough. But this final scene? I don’t know why people are so disappointed by it. The series was ultimately about Emily Dickinson and her poems, which sue was a large inspiration behind for many yes but their love story wasn’t the entire focus. It’s called Dickinson for a reason. You could argue that their story was concluded in ep 9, but the larger story (of Emily Dickinson) was concluded here. And I can understand some interpretations of this ending being that it symbolises the end of her life. Perhaps she envisions her younger self here (because she did live as a recluse for many years after) as she approached death (mermaids/sirens). However, we should all agree that surely it symbolises the future of her poetry and legacy. “Wait for me, I’m coming” is such a fitting final line as she sails onwards - into history. Right into even 2019-2021 where she had a whole series dedicated to her and her art and life. The final 25 seconds was a perfect ending.
Why some of you interpret the sirens as her upcoming death is a complete mystery to me. This is young Emily we're seeing, she continued living about 30 years after that. The myth of the sirens being a threat only applies to men, the travellers, it never was a threat for other women. I interpret it as her future recognition by other women (though we know she's appreciated by both women and men), us lesbians and bi women maybe, her seeking not the fame but the transmission of her words, her poems, to those who would intimately relate the most to them. Sirens are not a coincidental image, she is called by them, and she willingly goes there. The water crossed with a bark is often yes symbolic of a passage between the world of the living and the dead, but here I think it's symbolises more how Emily and us, the fans of her work today, have some sort of connection through time, how she was able to - in a way - resist death, we witness the posterity of her poems. Also Emily was gay af, hence the sirens, of course she went in the boat to join them xD
