    The bubbles come from air being trapped in their feathers. They simply open the feathers to release the air, and it helps to make them faster, by allowing them to move through a good deal of air (from the bubbles), and objects move faster through air than through water.

      @@brentlionakaboldchamp thanks. so they first have to surface and dive down before they can reach such speeds and jump out of the water?

    • @brentlionakaboldchamp
      @brentlionakaboldchamp Před 2 lety +2

      @@luudest Not really, because some air is always available to use that way, since they spend a lot of time out of water, anyways, before they ever go down. The bubbles help, but doesnt make a huge difference, also.

  • @chusmontes

    You should read the article in the magazine. Anyway and to cut it short, when they're in open sea they go to the surface and make their feathers "fluffy" so the air gets trapped under them. Then, they dive towards the ice sheet covering the coast and locate the holes in the ice from behind. At that point, they "contract" or "unfluffy" their feathers, what presses the air out of them in small bubbles. That seems to work as a lubrifiant in the water, so they can reach very high speeds.

    The bubbles are a result of the speed. When velocity exceeds the natural rate at which water can restitute, a void is created which in turn turns to bubbles.

    it's interesting the penguins didn't remain afraid, because there aren't many creatures that live down there, especially the size of humans. however, like penguins, humans walk on 2 legs and are very flat looking when standing up, so once they realized humans weren't killing them, they probably thought that we're "one of them".
