Rusty Cleaver Restoration [Antique Rusty Cleaver]

- I'm restoring a rusty cleaver in this restoration video. On this antique rusty cleaver, I'm removing the rust, polishing the metal, doing woodwork on the wooden handle, and I'll be browning in this project too. At the end of this restoration, the old rusty cleaver will shine again in its old splendor.
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
In the first step of this restoration I filed away the folded metal at the end of the handle. With this one step I already held all the individual parts in my hands. I then put the cleaver in rust remover for a day. With a file and various types of sandpaper, I removed all the bumps on the cleaver, and made the triangular hole round again with the step drill. On the bench grinder, I then polished the metal to a high gloss with a polishing wheel. Since the edge of the rusty chopping knife had broken off in some places, I created a rough basic shape again with the bench grinder (with a grinding wheel). With a whetstone I made a perfect cutting edge again, which is very sharp :). I sanded the wooden handle with sandpaper and treated it with linseed oil, the brass ring was sanded with sandpaper and polished to a high gloss. All components of the (formerly) antique rusty chopping knife are now finished and everything just had to be put together.
▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I found the cleaver in my basement, as I am still expanding the house I live in and many corners have not yet been "explored". I was surprised to have found this treasure. Maybe the previous owner wanted to arm it there? Maybe he gutted an animal there? I don't know, so unfortunately I can't say much about the history of this old cleaver.
I used the following tools: files, cordless screwdriver, sandpaper (different grain sizes), bench grinder, polishing paste (different types), whetstone, linseed oil, kitchen paper, rust remover, browning, step drill
It took me about 14 hours to restore, without the paint drying time.

@@ForgottenShineRestoration yeah I accidently the subtitles and It actually helper me under stand what you were doing without sound I'm not deaf just have slight hearing problems all in all loved the restoration and the overall end result nice job man
That's just so... *Chef's kiss*
Good to see an actual restoration for once, so many channels say they're rostoring something and then just modify the hell out of it. Great work.
Wdym by modifying the hell out of it?
@@stardustlullaby I think they mean like throwing out the old handle and making a new one (typically with a different handle shape too), and changing some of the blade’s shape, or giving it a stain (not sure what the actual term is, but I’ve seen some where they put a coating on the blade to turn it almost black)
It just goes to show that with a little TLC everyone can reveal their beautiful inside 😌
Yo I just realized watching the video with subtitles 💥

anyone realize when he polished the cleaver and showed it to the camera it reflected so good we could even see his face
Very nice job, man! I agree with you, I love polished brass as well. The real question of the day is what did that grape ever do to you? 😆
Hey Random! The grapes just weren't sweet enough, so I had to punish them.
@@ForgottenShineRestoration Fair enough! Next time they'll know to be sweet or they'll be getting the guillotine.

Very good. I like the scene on 5:44 what camera do you use?
Hey not terrible! Thanks for your comment, it was filmed with my smartphone and a macro attachment.
Is that a steel wire brush or brass?
Muito bom
Obrigada!
Bravo 🌷✌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hey Boob Haddadi. Thank you so much!
Oh man you should see the one you do in 6 months lol
I didn't see the screw at the beginning so I was wondering what kinda mad balancing skill do you have to balance a cleaver upright like that than I saw the screw in the table and now I feel stupid
How old do you reckon the cleaver is?

Question doesn’t grinding the peen on the tang defeat the purpose of peening it over that s is gonna blow out the first time you hit something hard with it

Any reason why you didn't use sandblasting on this cleaver?
no 🤔
@@ForgottenShineRestoration maybe try blasting first next time. Safe rust removal for maybe something more caked in rust. Great videos by the way. Keep them coming.

Could u restore my brain its rusty

Be careful exposing linseed oil to fast friction like that. It has a tendency to combust.
Hey K K. Yes, I noticed that with this project too, that it started to burn, thanks for pointing that out!

@@ForgottenShineRestoration Okay sorry to disturb you
You missed a spot.
I'm sorry but I can't stand polish and shiny paint over unfinished surfaces. That's like parfum without a shower.
My apologies but I can't subscribe.
Hello josep alacid. Why are you also of the opinion that the surface is not finished? It's a shame that you didn't subscribe to my channel, maybe it will work out later ...
@@ForgottenShineRestoration
The black spots, valleys and irregularities on the blade, accentuated by the shining.
All shiny knife blades on new items are flat.
A brushed surface finish is much better when you can't get it as smooth and flat as "chrome shine" needs.
I feel like I should have saved my comment. Most people will think it's rude, but I thought I was giving a slightly different POV about glossy paint; actually the one on the professional side.
