My good friend, Sally McRae, earned a spot in the 2014 Western States 100 - the original 100 mile race - after placing 2nd female at the Sean O'Brien 50 Miler (see my video from that race here: • 2014 SEAN O'BRIEN 50 M... ). A big part of running this race successfully is having a good crew to pace & take care of you at certain aid stations. Along with Dave Daley and Colin Cooley, Sally asked me to be her Crew Chief. Not one to pass up the opportunity to help a friend at one of the most historic races in the country, I quickly agreed.

Wow, that got some tears from me at the end! Love that her first thought when finishing was to hug her crew. And her genuine surprise and disbelief when she was called up on the stage beforehand as a top competitor! Great film. I need to go back and watch more of your archive!

I grew up with my dad running marathons so I'm somewhat familiar with the race experience but definitely not on the level of 50-100 miles, and I know nothing about Western. I really enjoyed your 100Km race video so I got a better feel about ultras from that. I feel like you portrayed the insanity pretty well. Sally being surprised at being called out in the top 10 in the beginning was really neat to see.
There was a nice blend of explaining whats going, talking with runners and crew, montage sequences to music, and effort put into showing just how hard this race was. It kept me interested the entire time and I found myself really wanting to know how it was going to turn out! Sally's epic comeback was really cool.
The only thing I might suggest is making it more apparent just how much time has elapsed during the video. I knew it went from before dawn to after sunset but I didn't realize she was literally running for 21 and a half hours until her time was called out, which blew my mind. I think the concept of running for nearly a day nonstop doesn't quite make sense to non-runners. Like I can't wrap my brain around that haha. What a feat of endurance!!
I loved this video. This is the type of content I'm most interested in: race logistics, pre-race meetings, crew planning, etc.
It´s amazing for me to watch someone like Sally getting to this wonderful goal in her running life. I really want to send her congratulations for this experience and you and all the crew for being so lucky being selected by her to share the race. All of you have been very fortunate.

Great job on the post production of this vid. I agree, this is your best yet. You captured the epicness of what I imagine the Western States being. Sally is a beast and makes me feel like a wuss being happy in spite of pain.

The fact that this girl can run 100 miles, and I'm dying after a 5k is truly remarkable! What's even crazier is that she can do this for almost a whole day non-stop, as well as getting top 10 in the female catagory!! Congrats to all of you for making a great team, and congrats to her for making it through the race in stride!

Ethan, this is seriously your best event/documentary/you filming stuffs video yet...and I have seen them ALL! Your voice over part is awesome!!! But in true GingerRunner fashion there are some dislikes...ok one dislike. You were the crew chief and so we only got to see small snipits of your runner, I would have loved to see you taping her up and stuff. I score this 4/5! Tchau!
I mention that I can't hold a camera and tape Sally up - I only have 2 hands and SHE is my priority, NOT my documentary. I'll probably use my gopro head mount next time :)
