    For years, analysts, banks and rating agencies promoted global retailer Steinhoff as a sound investment. With 40 brands under its belt, and operating in over 30 territories, the retail giant was one of the top performers on world markets. That is until the house of cards came tumbling down. Billionaire businessman and former chairman of the company, Christo Wiese, is suing Steinhoff for R59 billion. But was he really unaware of the accounting fraud and financial irregularities happening right under his nose? We put Wiese in the hot seat.

    With due respect, I think Christo Wiese is a smooth talker. Whitey Basson took one look at Steinhoffs figures and was not happy with what he saw. The figures made no sense and refused to get involved with Steinhoff claiming it was a dud despite pressure from Wiese. Wiese may not have committed the fraud, but he must have known with his business acumen something was not right. He liked the taste of the pie. How proud Whitey Basson must now feel that he stood his ground.

    • @ksc743
      @ksc743 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I found this hard to believe so I looked it up and you're quite right. Basson said when he looked at Steinhoff's figures return on equity was only 5% while the cost of their debt was 8%. Clearly the figures didn't add up. Very disappointed to know Christo Wiese was part of this although for some reason he didn't think it would go belly up. Usually the more wealthy someone is the more vigilant they are about their bookkeeping. I suppose everything was fine at Steinhoff as long as the wool was pulled over auditors' eyes.

    Retail tycoon Christo Wiese has been implicated in a multi-billion pound tax evasion lawsuit involving Africa’s largest law firm and a London-listed company.
    Numerous reports indicate the South African Revenue Service (Sars) is trying to recover 3.9-billion rand (£221 million) in taxes from the billionaire, who stepped down as Steinhoff chairman earlier last year in the wake of its own accounting scandal.According to court papers obtained by investigative group AmaBungane, law firm ENSafrica - where Wiese was an executive - allegedly helped London-listed oil firm Tullow shift assets out of South Africa in a bid to dodge taxes.
    AmaBungane said ENSafrica was allegedly left in charge of a tax shelter after Tullows’ restructure and later sold this tax shelter to Wiese.
