In the Eastern Cape, thousands suffer from severe malnutrition. It’s a condition that has led to the deaths of at least seven children in the province, and a crisis that requires significant funding and political will to resolve. But in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, home to one of the province’s biggest cities, the priority seems to be multi-million rand vanity projects that have become a financial drain on the municipality’s coffers. Despite being cash-strapped, the municipality established a development agency tasked with boosting tourism and economic development; an agency that is now cashing in on major projects funded by the municipality and its ratepayers. In East London, what should’ve been a world-class beachfront upgrade has disintegrated into nothing more than a glorified “stoep”, while the bill for the Waterworld Fun Park revamp has ballooned to an eye-watering R120 million. Carte Blanche investigates why an entity with a poor track record for delivery is still in business.

You should see what's left of the roads in (what used to be beautiful) Gonubie. Kids can't even pass their drivers tests because they have to choose between damaging their vehicle or veering around and away from the impossible number of mammoth potholes (which is apparently not allowed). I could not believe when I saw the huge display of expensive Christmas lights put up by BC municipality in East London this last festive season - how on earth is there money for THAT? It's heartbreaking what's happening to our beautiful Eastern Cape - a treasure that should be protected for all South Africans. So so much potential for economic growth there, but that is impossible with no infrastructure!

😪... This really hit close to home for me... The ANC has truly ruined Buffalo City... I'm from East London the place where there are war torn buildings is Quigney a Suburb of East London. Honestly watching this as a person who grew up in East London broke my heart. Waterworld was every child's dream two decades ago just like the ice rink that burnt down in 2005.

I was born and raised in East london, I remember how beautiful Quigney and Nahoon used to be, I've seen it deteriorate infront of my eyes , it breaks my heart because it had so much potential. To see people that are in high positions think that it's acceptable to manipulate the system and think they are still making a difference. It's pathetic and not acceptable. That project seriously could have not costed R100M. Something very fishy is going on here. CORRUPTION.

The fact that the pavement had grass growing through it already sets the standard of work done at 1/10.... lol even Ayanda himself responding to the interview in that manner shows that he's looking out for himself. It really tells me that the terms and conditions of the contracts awarded are poorly designed, and there's no harsh punishment of doing projects of that magnitude, therefore guys can can do what they want and be "negotiated with".

I wish we could be bankrupt completely before all our infrastructure is ashes. Money is created but man there are monuments you can rebuild once they are ashes they are gone forever.
