VA LONG-TERM CARE BENEFITS- Step by Step Application Process-2019 (Aid and Attendance)

  • The VA long term care benefits can be so confusing and applying for veterans benefits can be a long and stressful process! So many veterans are not receiving the benefits they deserve; benefits that can pay for home care, assisted living, nursing homes and even adult day care! Our family members who were war time veterans sacrificed so much for family and for our country, now it's time that they receive the veterans benefits that they so much deserve!
    In this video, you will not only learn about the veterans Aid and Attendance program, but you will learn how to apply, step-by-step. This information was not available when I was applying for Aid and Attendance for my dad earlier this year. A video like this would have made it so much easier!
    The Aid and attendance benefit is notoriously difficult to apply for, but it doesn't have to be. Follow the instructions laid out in this video and you will know exactly how to prepare and get your application reviewed as quick as possible.

    Thank you for sharing this story of your struggles with the VA. My story about trying to get benefits from thevVA. It lasted from 2013 until 2022. I learned that hiring an attorney would make things move along much faster, and would result in the maximum VA benefit. Yes, the attorney received 30% of my back pay, but that's a whole lot better than getting nothing and being frustrated every day of my life.

      @@SofiaAmirpoor Hello Sofia- I work in the health and aging industry and I'm trying to help some of our senior vets get this benefit. There are lots of "sharks" out there that are just after their money, so I figured, maybe I can learn this and offer it. I know I'm ethical- but I'm not sure how to navigate the VA (it's a BIG animal!) so this video was EXTREMELY helpful. I'm teaching myself so I can help senior vets with a limited income get some help. It's my way of giving back.

    Thank you so very much for sharing your insights! I was so overwhelmed when I heard about the application process but now it does not seem so insurmountable. I do have two questions, if I am filing an application online do I still have to mail the various forms to their respective offices? Second question, my dad is currently in a skilled nursing home, his Medicare benefits have been exhausted and we are looking at an additional 4-6 weeks of care due to stage 4 wounds. Once he's fit for assisted living, he will be moving to a different facility. That said, what facility do I list for application purposes, the skilled nursing home or the assisted living community, or both? Thank you so much for your help!

    • @SofiaAmirpoor
      @SofiaAmirpoor  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Lisa, I'm glad that this video made the task seem a bit less daunting! Do be aware that this video is about 2 years old and the VA website has changed a bit since then, but the process should be pretty similar. If you are applying entirely online, don't start the process until you have all your documents in order. Then you can scan all your documents and save them onto your computer, then upload them all at once onto the VA application site. Super easy! Regarding which facility to use on the application, I'd say use the nursing home for now and you can always change it later. My dad had to move during the application process and I just gave them an update. 4-6 weeks may not be enough time to heal a stage 4 wound, so his stay there might be longer than you expect. If you have other questions you can always call the VA helpline at 800-827-1000. They are very helpful answering questions about the application process. Good luck, and I'd love to hear how it goes!

      Hi Caroline, thanks for your comment! I think I put everything I know into that video! The VA website has changed a bit since I made that, but once you are able to navigate to the correct area on their site, the rest should be the same. My advice would be to have all the documents and forms you need ready and organized before you start the application…the process will go much smoother. And if you get hung up or have questions, call the VA helpline that I included in the description of that video. They actually answer right away and are very helpful…surprise, surprise!! Best of luck in your application process for your mom! I’d love to hear how it goes!

    Do you have a video or how to complete each section of say the 21-680 section by section if completing for someone else. We are trying to obtain Aid and Attendance for a veteran relative with worsening Dementia currently in an Assisted Living facility hoping to avoid her having to be sent to a nursing home where she doesn't belong, 8 months from now when all of her money is gone except her social security monthly check. I am also concerned about the "Claimant section" and who fills that part out? It asks for the phone number but am afraid to put her phone as she doesn't always answer and won't remember speaking with anyone. Same for mailing address vs. address where she resides (assisted living facility) because she doesn't always get her mail. My relative served during the time of the Bay of Pigs, but the VA Benefits representative encouraged me to apply as did her VA CSW. On the 966 form there is a section for Claimant and one for the Veteran. Which do I complete? Should I do both? Again they ask for mailing address, phone, etc. You mentioned the VA doesn't recognize POA, however section III Declaration of Intent asks for name of Attny, or Agent if a valid POA has been completed, which it has. I am POA for my relative. Sorry for so many questions and for making this great video! I feel like I am doing this alone......

    You are so thoughtful and kind to share this information Sofia. I went through a similar process as yours to get my Mom approved (very recently) to receive benefits as a widow of a veteran. Do you happen to know if we have to re-qualify each year for the benefit and also, if I am my Mom's primary caregiver, am I supposed to keep records of the activities, etc., that I perform on her behalf? In other words, once approved, will the VA ever ask for proof (receipts, etc.) that the benefit is being used specifically for her needs? I am confused as to how tedious I need to be keeping up with receipts, records, etc. Do you do this with your Father? Thanks for any advice!

I am currently working on a claim for someone and I am having his daughter write a letter detailing why her father is in need of assisted living, such as accidents, incidents or need for assistance with ADL's. You do not use this form unless you are providing additional information such as the letters.

    • @SofiaAmirpoor
      @SofiaAmirpoor  Před 4 lety

      Hi Richard! From what I understand, the VA no longer looks at assets, now they use “net worth”. A home (on less than 2 acres), a car and personal items, furniture and belongings are not counted. I believe the cut off for net worth is around $125,000. If your dad lives in assisted living, nursing home, attends adult day care or uses a home care agency at home, then the cost can be deducted from net worth. And there are lots of medical expenses that can be deducted too. There is a 3 year look back period. I’m sure that you are allowed to spend down, but I’m not familiar with the list of things you are allowed to spend on. I recommend that you call the Help Line that you can find in the description of this video, they can answer that for you. If he is close, but not sure, I’d apply, just so you don’t always wonder. Hello Sofia! Your videos are very informative! My mom already receives DIC compensation after my dad passed last year. To file a claim to receive SMH (Aid & Attendance) do I have to still send all the documents I've already provided them when I filed for DIC compensation? Are just the form to file for Aid & Attendence?

    Thank you for this. I am nearly done applying for my 88 year old dad. Does he have to sign it, or can I do this for him and sign it for him? You don't mention any attachments. Should I send his insurance papers? Thanks!

    • @SofiaAmirpoor
      @SofiaAmirpoor  Před 3 lety

      Hi Sally, if your dad can sign, he should, even if it's only an "X". If an "X", there should be a place for you to sign as witness. As far as insurance papers go, I would send in a copy of proof of any premiums that he might be paying since that would be counted towards his medical expenses. Otherwise, no, I don't think so. You can call the VA Helpline at 800-827-1000 to make sure since I'm not an official expert, and it looks like their forms have changed since I went through this process for my dad, so I don't want to give you wrong info. Good luck with your dads application process.....I hope it goes well!

    My father is currently in a skilled nursing facility which medicare and tricare for life are paying for but only has about two weeks left. It looks as though he'll need to be going into a group home after this. He's the veteran and lived in AZ, I'm trying to help my mom with this from across the country :( Should I fill out this VA-21-0966 form now or do I need to wait until he's been transferred into a group home before filling out the intent to file form?

    • @SofiaAmirpoor
      @SofiaAmirpoor  Před 2 lety

      @Megan Crowell. Fill it out now. You have 6 months to complete your application, and the earlier you submit it, the farther back the retro payments will go. Once he is discharged from the nursing home and is in the home, their administrator will need to fill out the form for assisted living/group home to verify his needs….along with the form that his doctor fills out….(I’m sorry, I don’t remember the names of the forms right now, but they are mentioned in the video). But even though he is still in the nursing home, there is plenty of work that you can start doing to start gathering documents. I’m sure it will go smoothly. Good luck to you and I’d love to hear how it goes! Please tell your dad that his service and sacrifice is so appreciated and never forgotten 😊
