  • 1990 Volvo 240 with 215,000km developed a sloppy or loose shifter. Very uncomfortable feel when switching gears. Easy fix by replacing 2 X rubber bushings.

Wonderful video! Usually rubber and sometimes, plastic bushings can soften and stretch temporarily for installation by dropping them into very hot water. You have to move quickly because they will stiffen again as they cool.

3:05 the terminology is that the front bushing is a higher DUROMETER. Great video!

I have the same problem with Mercedes-benz 190, however on that car there is no access to this bushing unless you lower the transmission. Good job from Volvo to make it accessible.

Yesterday while in city traffic, I stopped my 1986 Volvo 240 with the automatic transmission in the street so I could parallel park into a spot. Unfortunately, when I put the shifter into reverse gear, the linkage separated and I could not move. Worst possible situation! 90-degree heat, heavy traffic and frustrated people being blocked by by car. I was by myself. At that moment, I hated my Volvo more than anything in the world. I won't bore you with details, but I really hope this video leads me to a solution. My car is parked at home, waiting for parts. I feel like a family member has turned into a traitor.

It’s nice to see the older Volvos still on the roads, although we don’t see that many here in UK.
You mentioned looking through a ‘Catalogue’ in order to get the part numbers. I assume a volvo parts catalogue, which one do you use ? Thanks.
