Stan originally was a darker character when the Oggie's arrived, he did knock Hilda about occasionally, as seen in this episode where he smashed the room up and threw her about but she escaped. But he did mellow after a while.
In their first episode Irma reveals that their two youngest children had been removed by social services.
@@martinistakis1825 There was a retcon later on. Stan is heard saying to Eddie Yeats that he's never laid a finger on Hilda. But I remember Jerry Booth seeing a bruise of Hilda's face. The two 'lost' Ogden kids, Sylvia and Tony, were also written out of existence. In 1976, Hilda says that she and Stan only had two children, Irma and Trevor.
Stan “Belt up and clear out!”
Hilda “Aww, Stan. Yer’ talkin’ to me again!”
That tells us everything we need to know about their relationship.
Minnie's old fire place so much nicer than the '''modern'' fireplaces e.g. Elsie's new one.
My god how the viewers' tolerance levels have changed over the years!!! Domestic abuse is now frowned upon in Coronation Street, like it's something new. But it was even happening in the 1960s too! Coronation Street has always been about "real life" and being true to it.
Bryan Higgins It’s not viewer tolerance - it’s community attitudes and legislation.
@@helengazzara8725 Even so, viewers seem to be complain about things now in such a way, that you'd think the people in the show weren't acting and actually doing it. Like when Gary Windass killed the loan shark and buried him in the woods. From the amount of complaints received it's like those people thought he really had killed him and buried him. Things like this though, do happen in real life... Some viewers these days are living under a rock.
Yes Stan was quite the Les Battersby back in the day, at least Les was not a wife beater. In this episode Stan went beserk at Hilda and roughed her up. He would have done more but she ran out and he managed to restrain himself.
@@Uksoapfan They had two children on-screen, Trevor & Irma, but there were 2 other children, Tony & Sylvia, who were sent into care.
@@bryanhiggins3102 Yes, and also when Irma wed David Barlow in 1965, Stan said to belt her if she gets out of hand. David did look bemused that Stan condoned violence to women. Stan was a rogue to start with.
"Diana..Dors!!!!" This must have been a riot to make
If that had been now, I think Jerry would’ve been more concerned about Hilda’s bruise-maybe even reported it!
Scary stuff. The way Irma expresses nostalgia and laughs when her mother is screaming....
@@martinistakis1825 Yes. The Ogdens are truly dysfunctional.
Not a good idea to take Stan upstairs to tell him the news, Hilda! Stay downstairs and break it to him on front of David and Irma...
Great episode
Poor Hilda- comedy gold though.
Stan celebrating winning £100,000 (he thinks) and then at the other end there’s Minnie who can’t put her fire on as she can’t even afford any coal.
Unfortunately that's the world we live in.
Still the same 57 years later
I'm surprised Hilda played a practical joke on the factory girls all those years later when this episode must have stuck in her mind.
Probably why she did it a she knew how much it would hurt them all.
The old lady with Ena and Minnie in No 5 at 16:48 was a poor attempt at a Martha replacement.
Irma “Takes me right back to old times...”
Does Lionel not know Irma”a worked in that very shop before-for his predecessor, Florrie?
I think they tried to replace Martha with that old lady - didnt work
william f they tried to replace Martha with the ogdens didn’t work they should have just kept her
Yes that old lady was Clara Midgeley. She even used to sit in Martha's chair in The Snug. A lame attempt at replacing Martha.
That's what I was wondering - how long did she last? They should not have killed off Martha.
@@jasbegs1258 She left in April 1966, so lasted just less than a year. I will never forgive Timmy Aspinall even in his death for axing Martha.
I always view Hilda Ogden as a replacement for Martha Longhurst.
It's odd that they made wife battering semi-humourous. We've come a long way, baby.
Stuff the pools, I'd just like to hold Valerie like Ken did - and then he went and betrayed her with a pointed stick.
Aww can you imagine if they really had won it would have been great 😊
My dads work syndicate won £1500 on the pools around the time of this episode.Dadsshare paid for a new 3 piece suite, happy memories!
Alas, I think Annie was right. Stan would have gone through the money quickly and been no better off.
Seems like Ken was an s.o.b. back then, and he hasn't improved over the years.
I would say after Deirdre, he has.
@@analogueandy8x10 Are you saying he didn’t cheat on Diedre?
@@melaniemiller6487 It's not as if she didn't cheat on him either. They were both just as bad but more her in the older days of the early 80s.
Even if Stan had won the pools, he'd have just been an even richer slob than he already was. He'd have blown it on booze and cigs. Hilda would have got nothing.
The Old Soap.
Stan and Hilda, they were sommat else.
Omg.... domestic violence
Eee by gum i think i"ll get me spoons out and ave a sing song
Yes their 3 kids. Irma was the only one who forgave them
Im creased at this episode but if that fat lump had of lamped me he would have bedn eating his food through a straw
Does anyone know if the Ogden’s had children taken into care ?
Yes I think their 3 kids where put into care, because if stans violence and drinking, irma only one that forgave her parents
They originally had four children, two never appeared on the show and were said to have been put in care. These two unseen children were retconned out of the show in subsequent years.
10/10
And, to think of Ken's self pity and outrage when Deidre hooked up wth Mike Baldwin. The old hypocrite.
Ken is a NASTY fool! Always thinking he's so much better than everyone else. He's always been a slimy bugger! Also, considering the actor who plays the character had his own issues believing anything with a skirt on within reach wanted it from him, literally, so very sad!!
Yes i never took to the guy - too pompous
@@williamf4544 I said it before never ever liked him them and now ☹️☹️☹️
I've never been struck on Ken. As for Ogden, he should have got a good one back
@Alberto Yea my reply was a bit wierd. Haha. I think I meant that Eddie Yates would be good to have back on.
