In this episode we travel from Galicia along the coast to the province of Asturias, in Spain. We visit chapels and swim in rivers and visit the farm that we lived on for a few years before having kids. Asturias is known for its insanely magical natural beauty. It has the high peaks of the Picos de Europa and it’s stunning, craggy coastline with it’s bright blue water. We fell in love with this region years ago when we volunteered here.
In the countryside of Asturias, the majority of people still live according to their ancient traditions. Many of them are shepherds and it's very common for many families to have their own cheese cave in the mountains to age their alpine cheeses. Also, the majority of people still forage for their sustenance, finding chestnuts, wild mushrooms, hazelnuts, apples to press for Sidra, walnuts, and cherries, which all grow wild in the forests.
It is a very unknown region, most often only visited by other Spaniards. It is a place to be completely surrounded by natural beauty and to find beautiful, quiet countryside villages in the mountains or on the coast.
Please let us know if you have visited this area before or if you plan to go soon!

I live in Asturias and our arms are open to all those who want to visit us and enjoy this unparalleled paradise, also unknown in the rest of the world, tranquility and a fertile land where if you want you can live off it and the peace of mind of caring for your animals and your family friendly environment.
Thank you for making our little haven of peace known.

I was in Navia, Oviedo, and Luarca in Asturias In summer of ‘74. It was amazing. My paternal family had a large farm and he had rabbits and beautiful bulls. I loved that farm. We had our own Chapel and still a huge palace. We had to use bed warmers to warm the beds because they were so cold. It was August and it felt like late November in NY. It was so lush and green. My heritage is from there.

But as much as I like tourists to come, I dread seeing the beaches crowded with them, as our mountains already are. All my hope is in the rain and the education of people like Dane and Jillie.

Beautiful video. What a great experience to have been able to live there. My wife and I have a 2 week trip planned this April to travel across northern Spain, starting from Pamplona and driving west across Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. We have been there once before, almost 7 years ago, part of a much broader around Spain road trip, so we only spent one night at a rural hotel on the coast of Asturias going between Santiago and Bilbao. It was incredibly beautiful. Of all the places we’ve been to in Europe, this region is the one we most wanted to go back to and explore. If you have any suggestions or recommendations for places to see, particularly more out of the way villages and back roads of I would be most grateful.

For us, our overhead there was very low because we did not need to pay for accommodations and we grew most of what we ate. It is also smart to look into farms to volunteer on which would cover most costs. Now a days, we still travel very frugally. We save up and then pay as little as we can so that our travels can last longer.
