Were you on a tour like this with porters etc? I worry about not keeping the pace. I also like to go a bit slower so not rushing too fast. So awesome you did this. How can anyone give a thumbs down are you so calloused. Not only is this man amazing in his wonderfully simple but perfectly apt narration fantastic amature filming but ends on the best note possible... Every father every son should do something like this. I am so envious of the whole experience. In a world where people are being divided we need to make every effort to connect to unite to be interdependent and to kindle relationships.

@@JohnnieV The trail is definitely the hard way, for the adventurous in mind. Most people prefer to fly into Cusco, ride the bus to the train station, ride the train to Aguas Calientes and then a short bus ride up to Machu Picchu. The trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu and back can be done in one day. Typically, from 4 AM to 8 PM.
@@JohnnieV , Indeed. If you leave Cusco by 4 AM you can be at Machu Picchu around 11 - noon. You can spend the rest of the afternoon at the mountain and then spend the night at Aguas Calientes town at the mountain base. Then return to Cusco the next day.
My neighbor just got back from climbing Machu picchu.Her pics were incredible . It was her birthday so the chef made her a cake out in the middle of nowhere. Great story...thank you.

I just finished watching your video. I was hooked from the beginning. You are an excellent storyteller. I loved the pace and narrative of your experience. I was born in Peru and have been in Machu Picchu twice but never planned to take the Inca trail, much less climb the Huayna Picchu. But through your video I felt as if I was doing it with you. So glad you were able to go in this adventure with your son. It is evident the love you have for him. I got misty eyed at the end due to the warm and loving words you said about him. They used to make jokes about people inviting their friends and neighbors over to se their vacation photos. Portraying it as if it was a chore to be endured like torture. Perhaps some were or are. My father passed away in March of this year, 2019, and I would have loved to have been on a 4-day hike to Macchu Picchu with my father one day. You guys will always have that memory to cling too. My wife and I visited Peru in January and simply loved the country and it’s people. The Peruvians are amazingly friendly and we never felt uneasy there. The journey to Machu Picchu can only be described as breathtaking, and perplexing when you attempt to understand how they could have constructed this site and many others 500+ years ago. This journey should be #1 on anyone’s bucket list.

I am sitting here in my kitchen working and looking at the cold dreary rain swept view out my window here in the uk and was Doing as we all do flick through you tube for something to watch when I saw this. I too did the same Inca trail journey many years ago with my wife and the memories came flooding back I stopped what I was doing to fall back into that feeling you felt as I watched it, you truly put your soul into this and that will live on in this video. I Believe we all need to travel and experience what wonders the world has to offer it is so easy to get caught up. Thank you great video. We used a company called Llama travel who did and excellent job organising our trip.
Jon, and Elliot, this "production" of your trip and travels on The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was wonderful to watch in its entirety. I see you used a GoPro to do the filming, and filled in with other cameras. The image stabalization worked very well, it was easy to watch you hike up those uneven steps/rocks. What great photography, in everyway. The narration of the daily walks/hikes are mesmerizing, and very interesting. I visited Machu Picchu after experiencing the Galapagos Islands in 2013. I cannot say we hiked the Inca Trail, but we did have wonderful experiences traveling through the Sacred Valley and eventually the train to the small town of Aquas Calientes at the bottom of Machu Picchu. Traveling together, father and son added so much to your adventure, and your "Once in a Lifetime" experience. Thank you for sharing this with us. There is so much to compliment you on, I could go on and on. Bravo and well done!
What an amazing descriptive tour you took us on. It was like being there. My son in law also made the same treck you did, but was more focused on the climb than photos. He did take many, but not like you. At the top he spoke of the spirituality and the Eagles he watched below flying. Bless and thank you borh, your guide and porters as well.

Thank you for that Jon. My wife and I did the trail back in 2007 and it was the best thing we have ever done. We made fiends for life and will never forget it. Your beautiful video brought back so many memories and it was just as though I was there again! Funnily enough there was a father and his son on that trail. The only difference when we were there was that it was almost completely blue sky over Machu Picchu, which I think is quite unusual. We went in May - when did you go? Having sons of my own, I thought the end of your video was very touching. I'm really glad I stumbled upon this video!

I just watched your travel documentary to Machu Picchu. OMG! What an incredible journey. I even felt the emotion you must have experienced in some of your climbs. I have always said that Machu Picchu was a bucket list adventure for me. After seeing your documentary, I am not sure I could endure. it is obviously much much older than the official date of construction and it shows how it was reinhabited several times. I was there and it is just the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Flew to Macchu Piccu from Cuzco in a Peruvian Hu1h helicopter in 1972. We gave them a film and still photos courtesy of Dept. Army Special Photo Office Panama. Great trip. Back then, their were no permits required to visit. Peru was still evaluating what to do with this wonderful opportunity. We spent three hours on the ground.
THANK YOU Jon and Elliot for this amazing travel video, which I just "stumble" upon it. I have been twice in MP, 2003 and 2013 and both times the weather was great. I was always wondering about the BIG hike from Cusco and can tell you after seeing this, that I would have never made it; not in 2003 or 2013. Train, Bus and a tour guide into this ancient city was my way and whenever I look at MP photos/videos now, I'm looking for the one tree standing in the middle of the lower meadow if it is still there.

I loved watching your excellent video. I have made that hike 5 times, the first was in 1982 and the last must have been some time in the mid 90s. I was really interested to see how much things have changed. Campsites were unrecognizable as I believe they have been relocated. And bathrooms! What a great improvement as the situation was getting pretty bad. It also looks as if more of the actual Inca trail has been uncovered and been put to use. I will probably watch this more than once as I can no longer make a hike like that, and the crowds are too big anyway. Thank you for making it. I can re-live those wonderful times vicariously.
Sally Vogel I also did the trail in 1980..... quite different conditions. Just me and friend without a tent, just a tarp. To begin we had to cross a river in a small box suspended by a cable. Quite an adventure!
Melodiaindia, I remember that crossing at K88, except we always began the trek farther upriver at Chilca. Good for you doing it on your own! We had porters who wore flip flops and their own clothing...not as adventurous as you were, but still a marvelous adventure.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your amazing adventure. My son just got back from a similar trek. Now I understand what he went through. He loved it but said it was the hardest thing he ever did. Tom is 33 and traveled alone. After watching this, I wish I could have traveled with him, but I wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes. BTW, this is one of the best personal documentaries I've ever seen. came across this by accident today - a wonderful trip - I went to Macchu Picchu the 'easy way' by bus and train a few years ago- even then I knew I couldn't manage the Inca Trail with increasing arthritis. I went to Machu Picchu March 2019 it was the closet i got to heaven. Unbelievable when you reach the point. I was just amazed and speechless when i reached the top and my tears started flowing that i was able to make this beautiful trip.

Truly amazing what can be done with enough slaves. My heart aches for the poor people forced to carry out the "orders of Pacha Kuti." I don't imagine he paid union wages nor gave them coffee breaks and had a retirement plan for them other than "You can rest when you die." I am glad that two of my sons and their wives have had the chance to see this place. The younger couple doing the trail as these men did, and my middle son (who is 11 years older) took the bus both up and back a few years ago. While my poor arthritic body (childhood onset, so it has been a hindrance my whole life) made a trip like this inadvisable, I get to enjoy it through my children, and videos like this, of course.

Pull any trip together for you and your Dad, even something simple and close by. The silver lining of my Dad's cancer was our "Saturday drives" through the nearby countryside. We talked and shared things and became closer than I ever thought possible. We did our drives during his last 6 months. I will cherish those memories forever. It's about being together, wherever you are. You won't regret it.

The trail is definitely the hard way, for the adventurous in mind.
Most people prefer to fly into Cusco, ride the bus to the train station, ride the train to Aguas Calientes and then a short bus ride up to Machu Picchu.
The trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu and back can be done in one day. Typically, from 4 AM to 8 PM.

If you leave Cusco by 4 AM you can be at Machu Picchu around 11 - noon. You can spend the rest of the afternoon at the mountain and then spend the night at Aguas Calientes town at the mountain base. Then return to Cusco the next day.

I just finished watching your video. I was hooked from the beginning. You are an excellent storyteller. I loved the pace and narrative of your experience. I was born in Peru and have been in Machu Picchu twice but never planned to take the Inca trail, much less climb the Huayna Picchu. But through your video I felt as if I was doing it with you. So glad you were able to go in this adventure with your son. It is evident the love you have for him. I got misty eyed at the end due to the warm and loving words you said about him. They used to make jokes about people inviting their friends and neighbors over to se their vacation photos. Portraying it as if it was a chore to be endured like torture. Perhaps some were or are. This however has been an incredible delight! Well done and thank you for inviting us to come and see your trip and share in the closeness even though we will never meet. Wow. What quality viewing. This is brilliant. The best travel video I have ever viewed. The father/son element, hit home, and made me teary-eyed. My father passed away in March of this year, 2019, and I would have loved to have been on a 4-day hike to Macchu Picchu with my father one day. You guys will always have that memory to cling too. My wife and I visited Peru in January and simply loved the country and it’s people. The Peruvians are amazingly friendly and we never felt uneasy there. The journey to Machu Picchu can only be described as breathtaking, and perplexing when you attempt to understand how they could have constructed this site and many others 500+ years ago. This journey should be #1 on anyone’s bucket list.

I am sitting here in my kitchen working and looking at the cold dreary rain swept view out my window here in the uk and was Doing as we all do flick through you tube for something to watch when I saw this. I too did the same Inca trail journey many years ago with my wife and the memories came flooding back I stopped what I was doing to fall back into that feeling you felt as I watched it, you truly put your soul into this and that will live on in this video. I Believe we all need to travel and experience what wonders the world has to offer it is so easy to get caught up. Thank you great video. We used a company called Llama travel who did and excellent job organising our trip.
Jon, and Elliot, this "production" of your trip and travels on The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was wonderful to watch in its entirety. I see you used a GoPro to do the filming, and filled in with other cameras. The image stabalization worked very well, it was easy to watch you hike up those uneven steps/rocks. What great photography, in everyway. The narration of the daily walks/hikes are mesmerizing, and very interesting. I visited Machu Picchu after experiencing the Galapagos Islands in 2013. I cannot say we hiked the Inca Trail, but we did have wonderful experiences traveling through the Sacred Valley and eventually the train to the small town of Aquas Calientes at the bottom of Machu Picchu. Traveling together, father and son added so much to your adventure, and your "Once in a Lifetime" experience. Thank you for sharing this with us. There is so much to compliment you on, I could go on and on. Bravo and well done!

What an amazing descriptive tour you took us on. It was like being there. My son in law also made the same treck you did, but was more focused on the climb than photos. He did take many, but not like you. At the top he spoke of the spirituality and the Eagles he watched below flying.

Thank you for that Jon. My wife and I did the trail back in 2007 and it was the best thing we have ever done. We made fiends for life and will never forget it. Your beautiful video brought back so many memories and it was just as though I was there again! Funnily enough there was a father and his son on that trail. The only difference when we were there was that it was almost completely blue sky over Machu Picchu, which I think is quite unusual. We went in May - when did you go? Having sons of my own, I thought the end of your video was very touching. I'm really glad I stumbled upon this video!

I just watched your travel documentary to Machu Picchu. OMG! What an incredible journey. I even felt the emotion you must have experienced in some of your climbs. I have always said that Machu Picchu was a bucket list adventure for me. After seeing your documentary, I am not sure I could endure. Flew to Macchu Piccu from Cuzco in a Peruvian Hu1h helicopter in 1972. We gave them a film and still photos courtesy of Dept. Army Special Photo Office Panama. Great trip. Back then, their were no permits required to visit. Peru was still evaluating what to do with this wonderful opportunity. We spent three hours on the ground.

I have been twice in MP, 2003 and 2013 and both times the weather was great. I was always wondering about
the BIG hike from Cusco and can tell you after seeing this, that I would have never made it; not in 2003 or 2013. Train, Bus and a tour guide into this ancient city was my way and whenever I look at MP photos/videos now, I'm looking for the one tree standing in the middle of the lower meadow if it is still there.

Your film allowed me to experience the adventures of the trailblazing. Great shots you recorded and I will use some of them as a reference picture for my pastel painting. Thank you! I loved watching your excellent video. I have made that hike 5 times, the first was in 1982 and the last must have been some time in the mid 90s. I was really interested to see how much things have changed. Campsites were unrecognizable as I believe they have been relocated. And bathrooms! What a great improvement as the situation was getting pretty bad. It also looks as if more of the actual Inca trail has been uncovered and been put to use. I will probably watch this more than once as I can no longer make a hike like that, and the crowds are too big anyway. Thank you for making it. I can re-live those wonderful times vicariously.
Sally Vogel I also did the trail in 1980..... quite different conditions. Just me and friend without a tent, just a tarp. To begin we had to cross a river in a small box suspended by a cable. Quite an adventure!
Melodiaindia, I remember that crossing at K88, except we always began the trek farther upriver at Chilca. Good for you doing it on your own! We had porters who wore flip flops and their own clothing...not as adventurous as you were, but still a marvelous adventure.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your amazing adventure. My son just got back from a similar trek. Now I understand what he went through. He loved it but said it was the hardest thing he ever did. Tom is 33 and traveled alone. After watching this, I wish I could have traveled with him, but I wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes. BTW, this is one of the best personal documentaries I've ever seen. came across this by accident today - a wonderful trip - I went to Macchu Picchu the 'easy way' by bus and train a few years ago- even then I knew I couldn't manage the Inca Trail with increasing arthritis. I went to Machu Picchu March 2019 it was the closet i got to heaven. Unbelievable when you reach the point. I was just amazed and speechless when i reached the top and my tears started flowing that i was able to make this beautiful trip.

Truly amazing what can be done with enough slaves. My heart aches for the poor people forced to carry out the "orders of Pacha Kuti." I don't imagine he paid union wages nor gave them coffee breaks and had a retirement plan for them other than "You can rest when you die." I am glad that two of my sons and their wives have had the chance to see this place. The younger couple doing the trail as these men did, and my middle son (who is 11 years older) took the bus both up and back a few years ago. While my poor arthritic body (childhood onset, so it has been a hindrance my whole life) made a trip like this inadvisable, I get to enjoy it through my children, and videos like this, of course.

The 8 foot high wall on your left @38:48 is incredible. All the mix of big stones and little stones to make everything fit was so finely done. Do you remember if there was any type of mortar used to hold the stones in place? I didn't see any earthquake damage either, or was that edited out?

Pull any trip together for you and your Dad, even something simple and close by. The silver lining of my Dad's cancer was our "Saturday drives" through the nearby countryside. We talked and shared things and became closer than I ever thought possible. We did our drives during his last 6 months. I will cherish those memories forever. It's about being together, wherever you are. You won't regret it.
