Machu Picchu Hike: Incas Under Spanish Rule 🇵🇪

  • ■ MACHU PICCHU, PERU: When the Spanish Conquistadores, with the backing of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V's imperial ambitions, ventured deep into the Andes mountains of modern day Peru, they ran into another imperial power; the Incas.
From a little tribe on the brink of extinction in their home territory Cusco just 90 years earlier, they'd struck back and carved out a massive territory for themselves and in the process subdued all opposing tribes in what is today Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Chile and even parts of Argentina.
Exactly how less than 200 Spaniards managed to subjugate the powerful Incas, that's a topic I cover in a separate video. I'm having some technical issues with a corrupted file though, so exactly when I'll be able to upload it is anyone's guess at the moment. So to not keep you all waiting I'm uploading this one first.
So who were the Incas? What was their society like? How did they fare under Spanish rule? I cover these and many other questions as I wander around what is to date the most unique world heritage site I've ever visited in person: Machu Picchu.

An absolutely insane amount of rock went into building that place and all 'Inca' sites. The walls are like your standard blocks but under the ground and the terraces you're walking on are feet upon feet of larger rocks at the bottom followed by layers of progressively smaller and smaller rocks just under the sand and soil. Within those layers too are like little channels to direct water to other places so it doesn't erode the soil. The engineering that went into building that thing is just insane.

The Spanish conquest of Peru was one of the most important campaigns in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. After years of preliminary exploration and military skirmishes, 168 Spanish soldiers under conquistador Francisco Pizarro, his brothers, and their native alliescaptured the Sapa Inca Atahualpa in the 1532 Battle of Cajamarca. It was the first step in a long campaign that took decades of fighting but ended in Spanish victory in 1572 and colonization of the region as the Viceroyalty of Peru. The conquest of the Inca Empire (called "Tahuantinsuyu"[2] or "Tawantinsuyu"[3] in Quechua, meaning "Realm of the Four Parts"),[4] led to spin-off campaigns into present-day Chile and Colombia, as well as expeditions towards the Amazon Basin.

Having watched tons of your VLOGs to all the fabulous world places, I've concluded the best parts of it all is "Harold," himself.
