    The idea that Nintendo would somehow not come up with the idea to make a 3D platformer for their 3D console, and that they would need to take that idea from someone else is absurd.

      @ExtremeWreck Před 21 dnem +46

      Exactly. If(and I mean IF) there was someone who stole the idea of a 3D platformer from Argonaut, it would've been Accolade considering how rushed Bubsy 3D was & how it was an unfinished pile of toxic poopoo. The developers said that they were unaware of Super Mario 64 when they 1st made Bubsy 3D, but considering Bubsy is a blatant Sonic clone, I wouldn't hold onto such a claim. They probably stole the idea from Bug! on the Sega Saturn however considering that was a 3D platformer released in July of 1995.

      Super Mario 64 wasn't even the first 3D platformer released, seeing as Jumping Flash! came out April 28, 1995 in Japan, over a year before Super Mario 64 was released. Not to mention that Crash Bandicoot and Bubsy 3D were also in development at the same time as Super Mario 64. There's also the infamous Sonic Xtreme, which while it was ultimately cancelled was in development around the same time as Mario 64 as well.
      Its a pretty safe bet I would say that once 3D gaming had become a reality in the early 90's that almost every game developer on the planet immediately pivoted to translating every genre of video game into 3D. It would be extremely naïve of Argonaut to think that they were only the developer at the time trying to make a 3D platformer. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason that Nintendo rejected Argonaut's pitch was because they didn't want their 3D platformer competing for attention with Super Mario 64, which was likely in the earlier stages of development at the time.

    Jez San getting more confident over time that Nintendo stole the Yoshi Racers concept for Mario 64 isn't all that surprising if you read into research on eyewitness memory. People grow increasingly confident about their memories with repeated assessments at the cost of accuracy, meaning that the initial, unconfident report is typically a lot more reliable than the later, 100% certain one.

      Nintendo FUNDED development of key games... it is obvious that Argonaut Soft saw the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn using CD-ROM and attempted to get in on the 3d mascot EARLY...
      In direct comparison and year of release, Croc utterly destroyed Bubsy 3D.
      And to top it all off it was Croc that was on BOTH Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation while Bubsy 3D was only on PlayStation and was utterly lackluster software filled with bugs and bad gameplay design.
      The only problem with Croc is that it apparently didn't sell as much as what Nintendo 64 ROM Cartridge good games were selling which was millions to multi million copies...
      Argonaut Soft staff calculated that by 1997 there would be a significant number of PS1s and SSs so their very nice and safe 3d platformer just didn't become this big thing it should have become like some of the also rans on 16 bit systems.

    • @apollosungod2819
      @apollosungod2819 Před 19 dny +2

      Ehh allegedly Croc managed to sell 3 million copies on Sony PlayStation so that is technically a resounding success for Argonaut Soft and Fox Studios however the Sega Saturn and PC version didn't sell as well... way to go Sony PlayStation for actually being a profitable platform for videogames back then...
      However they made Croc 2 for PlayStation and PC and released in 1999 with no Sega Dreamcast version despite the claims that Dreamcast was way easier to dev for which is false because the devs had already made a Sega Saturn game and Dreamcast was brand new hardware that had no fully established install base so it's a huge risk to release games for only to watch them not sell.

    My favorite part about Jez San's alleged meeting with Miyamoto is the fact that Miyamoto isn't fluent in English, so even if they did meet, I can't imagine a conversation between them being that complicated. I mean, discussing a prototype that might not have ever reached Miyamoto in the first place is one thing, but then discussing the royalties from the FX chip? Sounds a bit unbelievable to me.
    I have nothing against the guy, but the inconsistency of his story and his claims, lead me to believe he's exaggerated the rejection so much that at this point he doesn't know what actually happened.

    • @BlueAizu_
      @BlueAizu_ Před 20 dny +11

      Stiff competition from the PlayStation 1 and the cost of manufacturing the Super FX 2 chip likely played factors in them deciding against releasing Star Fox 2 on the SNES. Plus don't forget the N64 was originally slated to release in 1995 (the same year Star Fox 2), and that absolutely would have cannibalized the game's sales. They could have stood to lose _a lot_ of money if the game flopped, and the odds were stacked against it.
      Ultimately Miyamoto felt it would be better to release a new Star Fox on the N64 instead, and to his credit he was right because Star Fox 64 is to this day one of the N64's most beloved games! It's very fortunate they still held on to Star Fox 2 for all those years and gave it a second chance on the SNES Mini and on NSO.

    Wasserman never even remembered exactly which songs for Dragon Ball Z he went uncredited by Saban for but that whole thing I do mostly believe because I wouldn't put it past corporate executives to do such a thing and Haim certainly has a storied history as an executive. Not a particularly bad one by all regards but hardly squeaky clean. Stuff like staking Digimon's future in the west, his own Saban Entertainment and somehow the Fox Kids block and the entire Fox Family channel on Digimon beating Pokemon in popularity. Also censoring DBZ to get it on syndicated TV, which Funimation didn't care much for (all the edits Saban were making were expensive as heck) and dropped them as a distributor, thus ending the original Ocean Dub.

    in terms of games that seem like rumors, there was some sort of mario game on PC (most likely a bootleg) that i played in the early 2000s it was janky but interesting in the fact it was kind of an isometric RPG type game which features peach, toad, and bowser all in the first part of the first level. never managed to get anywhere to figure out how to play it but it was interesting just because it happened to be on PC and looked pretty good.
    pretty sure it was wiped from existence as no one has information about it and it being on PC via download means it was a bootleg or some kind of accidental demo release for something because the game had so many weird things going on that it may not have even been finished or meant to be played.
    also played some kind of game found on a floppy disk which took place in a black room with two pentagonal platforms and a rope between them the player character (dinosaur or bipedal dragon) had to jump on to try to get to the other side but i was so young i couldn't actually do that and the disk was lost afterward so i never learned the name or if it was a full game or not.

    1:27 Not really "games" persay. The game maker would be the only one with any actual gameplay but unlike say Garry's Mod or MUGEN (which I also do not consider to be games as stand-alone software but rather engines that games can be made with), it wouldn't have had been a main part of the engine but rather something you have to put together yourself.

    I have been on the warpath for a while that there's a massive open world Mario game that has been in development since Odyssey came out, and will probably be a launch title for the Switch 2. For one, you can tell something is going on under tight wraps because of how loud the silence is, but they literally released a proof of concept side game in Bowser's Fury to show it off without explicitly announcing it.
