That ad accusing the guy of indoctrinating children in communism really is one of the sleaziest political attacks I've ever seen, and that's saying something. It's rather telling that basically no other country allows campaign commercials to be as unregulated as we do. It's bad for democracy.
It is racist, much like the time that guy said judge would not be fair because he is Mexican. The judge was born in the U.S.

There is not one elected official in the US advocating for communism. Problem is, conservatives don't fact-check, nor do they understand the political nor economic spectrums.

The thing I've always found concerning is they will blatantly lie about their opponents, Your casual voter won't know if it's the truth because they can't properly vet the info in the ad.

Lying is part of the culture. The US cannot blatantly lie with its foreign policy and wars, then expect domestic politics to stay clean. Reap what you sow.
You know... There's no law that says that the TV stations can't immediately follow such ads with their own commentary indicating that such ads are lying. 😁
Thank you for highlighting Jay Chen on your show. He is running in my district here in Orange County/Southern California. His opponent Michelle Steele's campaign in 2020 collected voters' mail in ballots in misleading and illegal receptacles if you recall the scandal ("Government officials say the receptacles are illegal and could lead to election fraud, but the party says it will continue the practice."). Her campaign has posted signs all around town that read "Jay Chen - China's Choice" when Jay Chen is a VETERAN of the U.S. NAVY. Such disrespect!! She's nothing more than a puppet.
So sad, I did not hear about that. Arizona judge is allowing armed guards watching drop boxes. That is illegal voter intimidation. What is wrong with that judge. Texas permitless open carry law? All these lying attacks on Democrats ~ scary. Not that Democrats do not use attack ads, but they are not organizing armed guards to watch voters at drop boxes or to stand outside polling places.

The person who splices the quotes would clearly know that they were being misrepresentative, so actual malice is easy enough to prove. I don't know why defamation is a crime but defaming a political opponent isn't.

Is there a way we could reform what's allowed in political advertising? I would really want to know, because this is ridiculous. The amount of research I do after being inundated with attack ads to find truthful information about candidates is exhausting...

It’s probably also because the audience is much bigger, I believe the NY studio only seats 200 or so people.
He's always done his stand up on weekends while doing. The Daily Show. He said he just wants the freedom to do other projects as well. He's also producing like a recent documentary.

Trevor Noah is a great comedy, very sharp in his analysis about issues. Yet the downfall of his job at the Daily Show is that he is either not free to express all of his views or he just sold out to the Democrates. Could you see that he did not mention any attack ad that is from the left?It is a pattern in his Daily show broadcasts. He leans on one side, most of the time. And that is not how he operated before the Daily show. Watch his shows before the Daily show. He was much more free when he was his own in South Africa.

The point is the absence of balance, the fact that the population so easily get hooked by the game of politicians from any party, thus dividing themselves into hostile groups to the benefit of parties that as group don't even care about the people. This applies to any country in the world

It’s odd that news stations do crime reporting because it’s the cheapest type of news coverage they can do that is engadging. It’s been so bad that like often 50+% of news coverage can be crime reporting of anecdotal events. Not stats(which involve stores of peoples lives)
Crazy thing is the right has spent 9.8 million on negative attack ads compared to the liberals 300k. Most of the right ads involve anecdotal impressions of crimes and perception of crime that’s influenced by the fact that it’s the cheapest news type they can do.

Even candidates I support have been using "negative opponent" ads, "but I will..."
Long ago, I got a print ad attacking their opponent for stance on an issued. LOL I said, thanks, now I do not have to research that candidate because that is exactly how I feel. I do not even bother to read them anymore, straight to recycle bin. TV remotes are a boon ~ skip over the ads.

I live in Denmark and I voted a few days ago. The place was walking distance. There were 8 booths and one was occupied the rest was free. I was greeted wirh a smile by the many people who worked there and keeps an eye on things. Best of all no one called me a mule or took my picture.
Meanwhile here in the USA republicans have proud boys with guns guarding drop boxes and the court is cool with it.

Want to eliminate attack ads? Implement Ranked Choice Voting - all the places in the US and the rest of the world that has Ranked Choice voting quickly realize that attacks just do not work anymore under that kind of voting.
(probably we'd want a better voting system than ranked choice, but ranked choice ranks above what we currently have on my ranked choice ballot of voting systems!)
This works when like minded candidates can form a coalition. Each one saying something like "I think I am the best candidate, but if I don't win I would support candidates X, Y, or Z". That can allow the best chance of one of those candidates to win, without having to pre-select which candidates should stay out of the race in an attempt to support a consensus candidate. It is hard to ask someone to drop out of a race. Plus, they might select the wrong candidate and lose the election when they could have won with one of the other candidates.
Ask Sarah Palin how this worked out for her.

All the political attack ads are going to be the norm of the future. People have to use their own common sense. And learn how to reasonably discern BS versus the truth.

Salt and sugar don't cancel each other out. We need salt in moderation to help store water and minerals to feed our muscles and nerves. And we need natural - simple and complex sugars - for energy.
But processed foods contain mainly high fructose corn syrup, and loads of sodium is used as a preservative. Cravings for either is related to adrenal fatigue and hydration. Cortisol is then released to try and balance your feelings of sleeplessness, cravings, fatigue, depression, weight gain and general illness.
That's why it's so important to just eat healthy!

Pessimistically, nothing short of revolution and total overthrow of the U.S. government would do that. The system is designed to be undemocratic, and needs to be yeeted. Fortunately, unions have an incredible power to hold the entire economy hostage until the workers' demands are met.

I agree that attack ads should be illegal. In fact, I also believe that each candidate should be GIVEN equal advertising time without the ability to buy more. The ONLY thing they should use campaign contributions for is traveling to hold town halls and rallies for their constituents. And before every election they should mail every voter ONE booklet with their sample ballot and each candidates positions on major issues and what they want to do for the voter and explaining anything else we will be voting for and what it means in lamest terms. Help voters to be educated voters and that is it. Then all the people in our government won't waste so much of the time they should be spending on working for us trying to raise money for their next reelection campaign instead.
This sounds too helpful for the american voter.

He was trying to drum up the Democratic base to get out and vote in the midterms, something that the Democrats have historically neglected doing and the Republicans have embraced. He has a TV show that he can sit behind the desk and have his voice heard all over the world four nights a week. But I definitely agree that him bringing the show to the Tabernacle and performing for what look like from the back of their heads, a crowd who thought they were coming to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is an example of someone performing their civic duty. Another example of an immigrant doing a job that American citizens don't seem to want to do.

Because, I think, people believe what they already think is true. It is called confirmation bias. The internet makes it so easy to fact check, discover the lies, yet some parrot the lies long after they were said.

Interesting. Even if it is free speech, I thought lying in a political ad would fall under defamation.
It’s Slander and it is illegal just ppl being lazy and not wanting to take the time to sort it out verify or go to court over. Not all but most ppl don’t want to put in effort and expect others to do it so they procrastinate. Ultimately the little guy can’t do anything against big names and expensive lawyers unfortunately. So, viewed as doesn’t involve me not my problem.
It is libel and slander, but like the Johnny Depp case in the UK against The Sun, it takes a ton of money, has to be sued on an individual basis, takes a ton of time, and takes a ton of evidence and is extremely difficult to do, can be a gamble and may go against even if it is painfully obvious it is a libel or slander piece.
And generally doesn't accomplish a lot, so these ads get away with a lot.
The usual result tends to be the lawsuit is threatened when it is obvious, in response the ad is taken down, another ad replaces it with a shuffled organized structure by more or less the same people but a different accountable source. New suit, ad taken down, rinse repeat.
So they end up just playing whak-a-mole and eventually gave up and most of the ads just run now to keep the disinformation to a minimum rather than mutating out of control with dozens of ads popping up with more and more wild lies.
That doesn't apply to political ads, but even if it did it would be a civil matter, not criminal. Suing someone takes months so you might win the suit, but who cares when the election is over?!
In my hometown one of two candidates dropped out due to lying attack ads, they don’t even know who’s behind it…it’s really shocking it’s legal, she seemed scared for her life from some that came to her door.

This is one of the reasons First past the Post voting is a bad idea. It forces the system into strict two party system and then attack ads become effective. In a multiparty system their effectiveness is limited since you have several other parties running, and tens of candidates from each party in a district. You can't run attack ads on all of them, so it's better to try to run ads that make you seem better rather than pushing someone else down.

Why would he want to be an American? He works here and around the world to make money in his chosen profession, but he's not an immigrant! My husband's job took us overseas, but we had no desire to become citizens of where we lived. Why do Americans think EVERYONE wants to be Americans? They don't.

When I watch my grandson and his friends come over I play a little game called spot the lie in the political ads and do your own research. 😂😂 These 10 year olds are getting quite adept. I’m in Ohio and DeWine keeps touting plans to process the dna evidence that is backlogged here. He fails to mention that it’s his leadership and Kasich before him are the reason it’s backlogged to begin with.
Thank you for educating the youth! We know most adults don't do the research on legitimate fact sites.

I never understood why pretty much all ads are attack ads against the other person. Trevor is right. Politicians should be going back to trying to sell themselves to the voters, not putting down the voters. Here in PA, based on the Oz and Fetterman ads, I have no clue what either of them are trying to push or their policies. Oz is basically attacking Fetterman saying he lived with his parents until he was like 40, and he want to let murderers out of jail. While Fetterman is basically attacking Oz with his things like him not being from PA, living in NJ, in it for himself. At least Fetterman has some self promotion ads.
Trying to think back, and I can't even remember the last time there was more ads trying to sell themselves to voters than attacking their Opponent. Mid to late 90s maybe?
Nah, they've always been around in one form or the other. In the 1950's it was McCarthy and the communist scare. Took years to get him and his followers out of our politics.
The teachers SHOULD be teaching kids communism. As well as facism, democracy, socialism and everything else. They teach your kids then it's your responsibility to follow up. It's not just free daycare.

I voted for Stacey Abrams because the attack ad showed and said her name 20 times in 30 seconds and only said her opponent's name once at the very end and it said it vary fast that I didn't understand it.

I do wish we could force the FTC to go after these ads using the Truth In Advertising ACT "When consumers see or hear an advertisement, whether it’s on the Internet, radio or television, or anywhere else, federal law says that ad must be truthful, not misleading, and, when appropriate, backed by scientific evidence."
