Grandmaster DXT was embodying the spirit of flyness back then. His flyness was so genuine and pure it spilled over and created a sub genre called scratching which lives on til this very day. Thank you!!
Although this wasn't the beginning of hip hop, it was an important record that introduced the turntable as a musical instrument. Herbie Hancock and Grandmixer DST are musical pioneers.
Wow, this is great. Herbie was always cool. He played piano for Miles Davis back in the 60s, and come the 80s he jumped into a new genre and rocked it. Herbie Hancock FTW!
So great to see this on here! Met them at Bristol Colston Hall with this tour and then again at London the following week. Had a great time, thanks for inviting us. Still have your neckscarf Wayne! Amazing video,..They all ROCK!
This is done by DST with real vinyl, and to be sure that damn needle didn't flip to the next groove was tricky, you needed hat they call now a waver, and if you didn't have the original Fab 5 Freddy's Fresh from the Beside, you had a hard time, because that Aaah this stuf is reeeeaaally /Freeesh was the final groove on a B-Side from a obscure record ( I had it and cutted fresh untilll you could not hear it anymore, now they cutt with cd's shit and mp3's easy, this is art, and Herbie noticed it
I am still in love with this video!!!!!! OK so heres a test for all of you "heads", what was the first R&B/Rap collab? I cant wait to see who gets it right!!!!
Yeah maybe a bit late to respond - I would have guessed "Save Your Love for #1" by Rene Angela with Kurtis Blow, but then I saw it came out beginning of 1985, so @Zumbro You're right I suppose !!
Wow i never saw this video.. My elders was always rockin this when i was strickly hip hop beats and scratching. I grew up in jazz but this was a hit and were young teen hip hoppers we were on no comment when grandmaster dst had his piece of this record. Its called rockit. I had a copy of this on vinyl and thats one record i let play solo. With a masterpiece they leave no space for improvements :). Thats geniuses herbie hancock and d.s.t. for you. This video lets me know dst was my daddys age when he ripped it back in the early 80s on this video. See back then the gerri curls didnt like hip hop because the drum machine and the hip hop beats were stolen or remakes of these originals. Now we became old heads and the vinyl switch to a file computer with cued up hip hop cuts. Todays djs dont know the records just like my era we didnt know the instruments. Soon the future artist wont know the turntables, culture or the vocal training.
See thats what im talkin about.who is doing this shit today...ah nobody! They need their computers and and fancy mixers and shit.ats what i miss about djs back in the day.it was all original.
The radio headphones are so unesesary. It's also weird to heard the Simmons and live percussion instead of the Linn and Fairlight. Cool video though thanks for uploading

Scratching actually came from Grandmaster Theodore and then Grandmaster Flash perfected it.
