The Strangest Elevator In Italy: the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto, Genoa

  • Continuing the occasional Weird European Infrastructure Tour: an Italian lift that switches direction from horizontal to vertical. And honestly, until someone pointed it out to me, I could not figure out how this could possibly be done safely. In hindsight, it was kind of obvious.
(By the way, the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto is known by a few names: I went by the one that seems most commonly used online by both Italian-speaking and English-speaking folk.)

Gosh... you think it was built only to reach the castle... ... Have you ever been there, took the elevator? That elevator prevents people living in the nearby from climbing across a hill, skipping a long walk or traffic. In a vertical city such engineering works are normal. As in Lisbon. Why no complaint about the portuguese? Haha

I was in Rome last year and the house I stayed in had this really cool old elevator. It had tiny little wooden doors, and all these little levers and latches and catches, and those metal retracting gates outside the doors.
I spent a lot of time just going up and down in it, and felt like I was in a 1950s spy movie or something. It was all clangy and mechanical, and you could see all the pulleys and wires around it. It looked to be a few hundred years old, but it was in great condition.
