- In 2022 the BMW 6-Series 650i is the last of it's breed - and prices are increasing rapidly - if you ever wanted the last dinosaur, the time is now! Buyers are realising as we head towards EV and the decline of the internal combustion engine, BMW's last big normally-aspirated car IS the 650i.

Your channel is criminally-under-watched, Timm - I discovered your site when researching the E38 a while back, but keep returning for your BMW wisdom :)
I agree! The man has an absolute wealth of knowledge. Has helped me with my E38 multiple times!
Thanks Jay and David! Just remember to comment and share and I'll get a few more views!
Of course I did enjoy your video as always. Looking forward to seeing you soon again. Thank you!
Thank you Timm for another very interesting and informative video! I bought my 2009 650i last year (with only 25k miles & good service records) and first found your diamond or lemon video which helped make the decision. So happy we bought it, love the car, and your videos definitely enhance my ownership experience! Thanks again and Happy New Year! Jenny from North Carolina
Thanks Jenny, and I had a great time in the Carolina's driving up the Smokies!
Love your Channel! I used your tips to buy a 2007 650i a few months ago, it had a bad transmission, but it only had 90K miles and passed all of your tips. I do all of my own work, so swapping out the trans wasn't a big deal. WONDERFUL CAR! I'm planning on keeping it.
THanks Lee, hope you are enjoying the car now!
Yet another amazing video Timm. Thanks so much. Perhaps you would get more views if this was entitled something like "BMW V8 engines are not as bad as you might think". This video is so informative it deserves to be seen by every BMW enthusiast. Have a great 2022!
Thanks Mark! I'll be doing a video on the BMW V8's soon!
The knowledge you've shared is invaluable and has led me to start searching for 'My last dinosaur'. Has to black with red interior. With the video's you've posted, viewing N62's has become easy and I know what to look for in service books and receipts. If the owner can't answer basic questions on maintenance, I walk away as I'm determined to have as 'hassle-free' driving as I can.
Keep it going Timm.
Thanks Andrew, good luck in finding the diamond!
Thanks for all the help over the years. I often refer to your website for help on my E38 and E65.
My M62 has its original chains and guides as far as I know. I always change my oil once per year.
Well done ANdrew!
I never thought id be so intrigued and learn so much from a man sitting in a convertible during a rain storm at night talking about BMWs.
I'm full of it!
This is Alvin your number one fan. Thanks for another great video. Blessings on you and your family in the new year. 😃
Happy new year Alvin, and great to hear from you as always!
Great video, what i love is the beautiful sound quality of you speaaking inside the BMW, the acoustics sound like a proper recording studio, bet if you were seated in a Mondeo it wouldn't sound as nice.
Thanks - the audio really shows the interior quality!
Thank you Timm, I subscribed AFTER buying a low mile 2005 545i. Not knowing any of this knowledge that you share was very nervous about my purchase, but after a inspection as you suggest I am now confident I made a good purchase of a extremely well maintained N62.
Glad to help, and well done!
Hello Timm. Thanks very much for all the great content. I bought a 2004 645 brand new and made the big mistake of selling it 10 years later. Today I bought a beautiful 2007 650 with only 64,000 miles. After watching your videos I knew exactly what to look for and I think I’ve got a really great example. Happy motoring and thanks again. Patrick
Nice work Patrick!
Thanks Tim for your good work on your canel. Hope you getting a good year 2022. Regards Jonny from Sweden
Thanks Jonny, and the same to you!
I became a big fan of you and I am so happy to say that I bought a beautiful e63 2008 today after driving a 2014 BMW F30 2L for the last 8 years. A huge decision to change for an older car…. Thank you for your fantastic videos!
My pleasure Julien, they are great cars!
I couldn't have said it better myself. Maintenance is key. Great video!
Thanks Edwin!
Nice one Timm
Can’t get enough of your vids.
Not as brave as you though. I chickened out and went for the 630i convertible.
“Who said CHICKEN!!”.
Bravo! A video in the rain! Now that’s what I call commitment to the cause👍
Thanks Robert, only a little windy and wet!
Excellent video and thank you !
My pleasure!
Hi Timm....last year I had to decide on a 2004 645ci SMG with 78k miles. I walked away two times after all the bad stuff about the engine I found in the internet. Only because of your videos and pointing out the reliability will be there with service I DID buy the car after all. Love the car but the BMW I3 I bought this year is my new fav. But after watching this video I am even more convinced to keep my dinosaur.😆....keep up the good work....we will always be watching you.
Thanks Andreas, and good to hear from you!
I have a 2009 BMW 650i convertible, with 55,000 thousand miles on it. I was just about to sell my car this year of 2022 until I watched your video. Thanks for helping me realize just how rare, and hard to obtain, this car is going to become in the near future. It's a very special car, and nothing else looks like it on the road even, 13 years later lol. It remains to be "arguably" the best-looking convertible, top-up, or down "touring car creation," that BMW has ever made, and looks awesome from any angle. My car is in excellent condition and drives like a dream, so I'm going to keep it now. Thanks again.
Well done Quentin, that's a good call!
I literally just bought a 645ci coupe with just 55000 Miles this week. Absolute love it so far.
Well done Jack!
Happy New Year, Timm! Looking forward to learning more from you in 2022!!!
Thanks Steve, and the same to you!
Thanks Tim, Happy New Year!
Thanks Art, and the same to you!
Your videos are very good, so clear and informative, thanks
It is good to get comments like yours, thanks!
Great video Timm. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
I enjoy the repeated emphasis on maintenance on the M62 and M62TU engines to avoid timing chain guide issues. It never fails here in the US when someone has a V8 for sale many commenters ask if the guides were done. Mind you these are not even people interested in buying the car. Usually kids in their late teens and early 20’s. There has been the issue with immature E38 ownership with the cars being treated a 1/4 mile race cars as opposed to the luxury cars they are. I have a one owner E38 with 97k. I change my oil with synthetic and replace my guide tensioners with no plans to replace the timing guides. Great channel.
That's very kind of you, thanks!
Tim. Christopher from the USA, you are the reason I bought my 2009 650. I had heard all the horror stories about the N62 engine and was afraid to buy one. After watching your videos about what to look for, I was much better informed. I looked at several cars, and walked away from them.
Glad I could help Christopher!
Though I've found Timm's materials after buying a '08 e64 650i vert at around USD 16k in here Korea Sep 2020 committed to have the infamous valve stem seal and coolant pipe work which cost abt $5k from at local BMW specialist indy right after the purchase and now I'm the one happy owner. Thanks for the great content as always Timm!
Well done Niclas!
At the time of the making of this video, I had just bought a 635d convertible for pennies a flagship gorgeous machine priced like ford hatchbacks of my youth days. Partly thanks to your videos, last week I replaced it with a 2011 650i convertible, I can assure you, this is one of those you wanna keep. A beauty which will keep giving, without a doubt the perfect daily. Thanks Timm, your BMW wisdom is like a breath of fresh air.
Always my pleasure!
Helpful video. Thanks Timm.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Tim! I commented a while back on your opinion of 645 or 650. You said 650 of course. So here I am, just purchased a 1 owner 2007 650i! It's lovely. Your videos are fantastic and very helpful. I think you're round the corner from me, I'm in Basingstoke. See you around!
Go big or go home, and you went big, good man!
Hi Tim , I’m new to your Chanel . Thank you 🙏🏽 for sharing you knowledge & experience.
You are very welcome Alz!
Yep, so true. Regularly changing oils is crucial... Especially engine oil. Nice informative video again. Have a peaceful 2022 :-)
Same to you Baggie!
Timm is doing great job! Iam an Alpina B6 e63 owner and greatful I found Timm’s channel
Welcome aboard Lucjan!
I bought a 2012 650i convertible with 69k on it in August from a BMW dealer. A few days later, “drivetrain malfunction” warnings popped up and then the dreaded blue smoke. The engine ran hot; oil temps to 250° within moments of starting. Took it back to dealership and they replaced everything - valves, rings, seals, turbo cooler - all as a goodwill warranty gesture; I drove a brand new loaner for a month and they worked on my car. Since then it’s been nothing but a dream. I feel like I have avoided paying for the most consistently cited issue and most costly repair. I honestly prefer it to the new model they lent me - too many electronic things to go wrong. I did upgrade my audio system and had the “MMI Prime for CarPlay” installed and I’m so happy. I will hang on to this baby as long as I can. Thanks, Timm!
Well done Molly, sounds like you got a real bargain there!
Fantastic video, help & info as always...top lovely knowledgeable chap enjoy Yr 2022 & stay safe thanks 👏👊👍👌
Thanks David, and the same to you!
Very interesting and so knowledgeable Tim
Dad just told me about the Chanel 👍🏼
Great to have you here!
you should be on TV, great show. thanks
Thanks Eoin!
Great video
Thanks!
Love my 2010 650i convertible it has power and looks amazing with the top up or down highly recommended!!
Well done Reg!
Great post, I’ll be looking for one here in the US. Happy New Year!
Just bought my first BMW used , 2006 650i convertible with 73k miles. Been attacking the areas that influence lifetime like the coolant and oil, onto a few other things when weather improves. I live in New England. Btw paid $15k for it if that helps.
That's a good price, well done!
Same to you!
Great video about how you're supposed to maintain these cars! The prices are rising, but the big BMWs are still pretty cheap in the UK. The 840s with the M62 engine like yours are about €35-40k in Germany.
Thanks Georgi! I'm never selling my E31 anyway!
Happy new year! i bough myself an E53 4.8is this year! Lets hope the value skyrockets :D
I hope so too Markus!
my first 540 was sold as needing a head gasket , bought it cheep and replaced the pcv and had it for another 10 years . m60 great engine in both the e34 and the e31 840
That happens quite often, well done!
Have a similar situation, own a 2008 650I coupe with manual transmission since 2010, got it with 21000 miles, now 138000 and runs as good as on the first day of ownership. Do most repairs and service on my own and change the oil every 3000 to 5000 miles or at least once per year. Its a great car but can be very expensive if you can’t do repairs on your own. Over the 12 years and 118000 miles of ownership I had to address the following:
Alternator bracket seal
Valve cover seals
Timing cover seals
Coolant transfer pipe (AGA pipe)
Rear of engine coolant seal, only accessible when removing trans for changing clutch at 112K miles
Front suspension tension strut arms
Vacuum pump seal ( use Volvo part, much cheaper)
EGR Valves as preventive
And normal maintenance, coils, plugs, brakes and a lot of oil changes.
Considering the time and milage, its not bad, especially if you can do it right on your own
Still the best car I have ever owned
That's excellent work, well done!
You've done well RW impressed
My E38 had been running on Mobile 1 0w-40 for over a decade flawlessly and I only change it ever 2 years (low drive time).
Im trying 10w40 from liqui moly for the first time now. Hope it will run to my expectation
Great video
I just bought it 650i 😊
Well done!
Hi Timm this is Alvin your number one fan. I'm just checking on you, I hope you are doing well. Have a great weekend my friend.
Hello Alvin #1 fan! Hope you are doing well - I'm working on the house for a change but will have more video's very soon!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation ok stay safe my friend.
Hey Timm- Thanks for the video. We are looking at a 2006 6 Series convertible with only 47000 miles on it. I like what you said about the oil sitting because the owners didn't change the oil because they weren't driving it much. Thanks for this info. We are going back to look at it so I have your video to help!
Good luck Scott - don't let your heart rule your head!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thanks!! It’s a tough one!
Hi Timm. Really love all your videos. They are so helpful. I was wondering if you have had any issue with cornering lights failure and dynamic drive failure? Kindest Alec 2006 650i Convertible owner
Thanks! Sorry no, not had those problems (yet)!
Try and keep it a secret for a few months, I'm saving for one now! I can't decide between a 635d or one of the petrol engines, it will be daily driven, maybe you could do a 6 series model comparison with details on the differences between the 630, 645 and 650 and a bit about the diesels as well with particular attention to the reliability issues. My partner had a X6 35d which was a heavy big thing but still got a move on so I think a 635d would be fine performance wise. My daily just now is a 170bhp merc clk diesel and I can live with the performance of that. You come across as a knowledgeable and honest guy and having owned one for years you have personal experience which is worth a lot.
There are still cars advertised for around 5 to 6 thousand which is my budget or it will be by about May, I've just sold my z4 but I've a bike to sell when the weather picks up and a couple of months salary to get so I hope the prices stay flat until then. In the mean time I'm watching every 6 series video I can find, so thanks for the content.
I've used liqu moly oil saver and works great with the n62. Keeps the seals fresh and I can definitely tell it has cured my issues with leaky seals
Great tip!
found one i want to buy for 12,9 at 56k miles. looks great under the hood, clean no discoloration rust anything as far as i can see.
Good luck, have a watch of this first: czcams.com/video/Aw9w7Jrgm9c/video.html
Owning 645 convertible. Best car for it's money even after investing in it twice of the price that i bought it 2 years ago.
That's the way to do it!
Timm, thank you for all of your hard work to make these videos! I've become a huge fan of your channel! I just won an auction here in the States for a 2007 650i, with a 6-speed manual transmission with only 21,000 miles. All services were done at BMW regularly except for a 5-year period where the vehicle basically sat. All of your suggestions regarding what to look for in making the decision to buy, or run like hell, this car screamed buy me now! Everything operates and looks brand new. This gentleman had the financial ability to service the vehicle without question, so I doubt he avoided any service warnings due to financial reasons. My question is what services should I request be done not because of miles, but because it's age (16 years). And should I be concerned of the little to no service done during it's 5 years it sat (around the 15K mile timeframe). I think the annual service warning system would have been screaming unless it only triggers by mileage and not timeframes. I also know there were approximately 9500 (Coupe & Convertibles) built worldwide in 2007, is there a way I can find out how many were manual transmissionsI? I thank you for your advice in advance and I welcome your thoughts!
Good man! In the UK we can look on how many left.com for that information
In the UK we can use how many left.com to find that information. And, good find!
Going to look at one next weekend after watching your videos over the last couple of days, any further advice?
Here you go Paul: czcams.com/video/Aw9w7Jrgm9c/video.html
Great video Timm.
My 650. Till death do we part.
Keep up the great content.
Nas
Thanks Naeem!
You made my year! I knew my 2007 650i Convertible was a good investment. I'm just sad that I can't drive it until next April/May. I live in Colorado.
Colorado's going to slow you down a bit!
I sold a 2014 Victory Vision motorcycle and replaced it with the same car you own. I look thinner and I'm safer in the BMW.
I just discovered your channel, it looks very informative. I'm looking at going from my trusty Insignia shitbox to a 640d in the next few months. Do you have any recommendations on what to look out for and avoid?
Thanks, here's what to look for: czcams.com/video/Aw9w7Jrgm9c/video.html
Tim, thanks for all of your advice. I bought a 22k 650i in 2013 and I’m now on 110k. Because I use it as a daily car and cover 10,000 miles per year, it’s always had yearly oil changes with the correct oil. I’m sure that’s why it’s never needed any of the various seals or valve stem seals replacing.
That's the way to do it Doc, now if every owner did that the car would have never got such a bad reputation!
I hope you’re right about the values rising Tim, although so far on Autotrader they seem to be starting at around £8,000. 🤞
Hi what is the correct oil for 645ci 2005?
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Mines done almost 200,000 kms and timing cover seals failed on one bank, sorted easily enough. Regular oil changes and it's rock solid. Great car.
Greetings Timm! I was wondering if buying this beauty as a first car would be a good idea. These are some of my favourite looking BMWs out there, but I just want to be very safe (so I am watching all of your videos about it!)
It's a bit of a beast and needs looking after, but if you are keen, why not!
G'day Tim. Thanks for all of your informative videos, they have been a great help over the years. I have a 2006 E64 I purchased 2 years ago from an in-law, who rarely used it, with 15000 miles on it. Apart from computer issues with the DSC ,which fixes itself when it pleases, do you recommend a coolant change, or should it be ok with the little miles it has before worrying about that? It has the blue coolant in it. Your channel and information is wonderful! Cheers mate!
Hello Colin, yes the coolant should be changed every five years or so - if you have a brown top hose then it's a good time to do both: czcams.com/video/MqgytwY-zd4/video.html
No worries. I checked and the hose is still black and new looking. Thanks again Tim!
2006 BMW X5 4.8is owner here. It has the N62B48 engine. People keep telling to hang on to it for as long as I can. Haven’t had the infamous valve stem seals issue. Been quite reliable and I must say quite economical for a V8
The M62tu is also pretty economical for a v8 in the E38. I can regularly get 29mpg highway on it.
It is a very clever engine and well worth hanging on to!
Hi Tim, great video, I pad £6750 for my 650, I think I got it just in time !
You did, hope it is going well!
Hi timms... Love ur imfo on 650i... I'm in Johannesburg... Have a 06 BMW 650i... Same color lol.... Coup.... Did u ever make a video for alternator gasket replacement??
Thanks Shawn, I'm afraid I wimped out and got Lee Shannon to do it!
Hi Timm - do you have any videos showing how to replace the rubber trim around the windshield on a 2008 BMW E64? I have got all the rubber trim removed except the top trim above the windshield...I'm having an issue getting a hold of it to pull it out due the metal c channels inside the trim...I know other sites said it would come out without removing the windshield but I am starting to have doubt. Thanks much for all the videos and help!!!
Sorry, not had to do that yet!
Good morning Timm!!!
Morning!
Hi Tim, great video as usual - do you think the e39 540i will go the same way??
Yes, I would hope so!
Great channel. I just bought a 2003 BMW 760Li. Any tips you would recommend in keeping the car in good condition? I am guessing a car cover is a must.
Thanks! Regular servicing, and if you are getting a cover then get a multi-layer that is kind on the paint.
Nice thing about the newer N62 is the alternator is a conventional air cooled unit.
That's true! I changed the alternator on my M62B44 and that was water-cooled, a lot of work!
I bought a 630i due to all the horror stories with the valve stem seals. It would be nice if you could about this model aswell. Nice thorough videos. Thanks 👍
Just keep up the regular oil servicing and you will be fine!
Are you happy with your 630i? What's the mileage like?
@@mantaskizeliauskas9567 108.000mls, really good.drive. 6 series is overlooked by the public, it wont take long before prices pick up.
Could you do a video like this on the F12 / F13. It would be very interesting to hear your knowledge on the next generation 🙏
You will have to wait until I own one!
Hi Timm, thanks for your informative videos! Do you know if there's a difference between the 645i and 645ci? Cheers
Not that I know of John!
Is a stunning car
Thanks!
Hi tim love watching your videos wonder if you could shed some light on a few problems im having with my 650 i drive has stopped working, roof wont operate properly i do have a weird christmas tree of lights when key is first inserted, also recently the car sort of stalls under brisk acceleration, then kicks back in and i get a whump from the back end like a car has hit me from behind, indicators when locking have stopped working and time hss reset itself, its booked in for rework of battery cable,do you think all of this could be due to battery problems put it on scanner and all i got was a code for thermostat fault
That's a battery problem - time for a new one!
Thanks really should have worked it out myself what with the battery warning light but thought id ask anyway just in case
Thanks Tim for the video - I have a 2004 645CI MSports in Australia though it’s a UK import - I have spent a lot of $$$ restoring the engine as the previous owner did not the right things with it though it’s been a dream ever since. I’m not selling it…
The only question I have for you is that I changed the thermostat to a 90 degree to keep the seals lasting longer… have you done the same with your car?
No, I have the temperature-mapped one still fitted, however, in Australia it would be well worth doing! Thanks!
I had an 05 645ci coupe and put 198k miles on it with it never needing the valve seals or coolant pipe. I am also a rolls-Royce mechanic, but my ex partner was vindictive and took it from me when we broke up, I bought it with 53k miles on it. And man, it was a war horse, never broke down, never left me stranded. I miss it ver much. I will get once soon eventually. I told my current partner that I am looking for another one
Don't hang around too long AJ, they are becoming quite scarce!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I actually have an app on Wednesday with a customer for his Rolls-Royce Wraith brake service and he has a 6 series that he said needs a transmission, and I’m thinking about tell him it not worth fixing and tgive it to me as payment for some of the repairs on his Rolls. I’m seriously considering considering on how it will look when I do go on Wednesday to check it out.
I have a question for you Timm. How is the quality of materials in the interior of these cars? I was actually set to buy a F10 5 series, but put down by the interior quality. The highs where very good, and the lows where far worse then my old E39. A lot of plastic cheapness overall. That made me think of a late model year E63 instead, but haven’t had the change to check one out yet. It is hard to get an understanding from the videos if the dash is leather wrapped for example? What about tactile feedback from knobs and buttons? Any areas you feel BMW cheapened out?
Love your videos, and you got an awesome name as well!
Hello Tim, good to hear from you. The 6-Series is certainly better put together than the F10, but, BMW are certainly heading for a range-constant build quality with the interior of the later 6-Series being quite similar to the 1-Series! The E64 is not up to E38 standards, certainly not the E38 Individuals and the leather dash. It's not too bad with the wood veneer dash - I would avoid the alloy-finish ones, they look a bit cheap. You will have to see an E63/E64 to judge for yourself, but it's OK, nothing luxurious but better than most.
I am looking to buy one for a long time, hope I will get a good one one day
Good luck!
I had an E31 (1991 850i) but had to sell it for $16k 8 years ago because I needed money. One of the worst decisions of my life. Tried to buy another one a year ago and they were all over $25k here in the U.S. so I went with a 2007 M6 instead. Still miss my E31 to this day. Trying to keep the E63 but money is tight again, but I'm fighting to keep her.
Yes, E31's are now worth a lot of money, makes no difference to me as I will never sell mine!
I also pop a couple of cans of Wynns in each year. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned by far!
So do I!
I have an m62 (non vanos) question. My car is taking a long time to get into closed loop on cold starts. I have noticed one O2 takes twice as long as the other to respond. It goes into CL on Bank 2 however B1 has no response. Around this stage I get bad missfires across both banks at idle. Turning off and restarting cures the problem for a few seconds.
My question is how long does one expect one of these O2s to respond after cold start?
I probably also have a vacuum leak as the additive adaption on Inpa (thanks to your website for help) is at +15.
Yes, 15 on the additive values means a vacuum leak - check your PCV's!
Next month I’m getting mine
Good man!
There's a lovely 335i m sport convertible near me. Might make a move now
Hi Timm, love the videos, MANY thanks and keep them coming.
Am about to take the plunge on a very nice looking 2007 E64. I have anxieties about the early oil changes though (see below), obviously done according to extended service intervals rather than more sensibly, yearly (latter ones are better). Can't see any smoke and no oil burn under oil cap; would you view this as a deal breaker? Thanks again, Nick.
19/7/07 12,072 miles; 18/5/09 17,084 miles; 18/4/11 22,701 miles; undated but assume mid 2013 34,501 miles; 5/5/16 64,862 miles; 10/10/18 78,332 miles; 9/9/19 79,630; 17/9/20 80,856 miles; 24/9/21 82,127 miles.
Thanks Nick! The best way forward is to perform the checks as shown here: czcams.com/video/Aw9w7Jrgm9c/video.html
Hi timm. Ive got a engine light on and holding the check button on the indicator stalk shows up clear but when i check in the idrive it shows microfilter needs changing with image of a box with dots in it and a fan icon. Everywhere i look it shows to change the cabin air filters under the bonnet. I have changed both of those and cleared the code but next day it has come back on. What other filter can it be?
Hello Saladam, here's how to reset the light: czcams.com/video/2_JolvV6JWM/video.html
One of the reasons I bought a 550i is because it was the last 5 series with a V8.
I wanted the v10 m5 but that car is weird phase where it’s either 8 owners and no maintenance or someone asking $50,000 still
I do like the sound of the N624B8 in the lighter 5-series!
Tim, after regular oil changes, how many miles have you gone so far without the valve stem steals failing?
Im changing my oils every 9000km, I dont even go to 10k as recommended. No issues yet after 20 000km since the repair. No issues whatsoever.
What should I expect?
I've done 50,000 miles bringing it up to 140,000 miles Mariyan.
Hello, I've come across your brief article about the m60 flood issue, and I'm willing to try to fix it your way. I just wonder, isn't it dangerous to rev a cold engine to 5000 rpm for a long time? Thank you for your response
Doesn't seem to do it any harm, and if you want it running then you have to pay the price!
A low mile 650, 6-speed coupe is so appealing to me...I'm not even sure why but I'd love to own one...
Go on, you know you want to!
I’ve got a S62 e39 M5, here in the USA the prices for a serviceable 150,000 mile car are north of $30,000. Keeping them maintained through the dealer network is a nightmare both because of their habit of up selling and overcharging, and additionally now, they don’t have qualified experienced techs to work on them. My dealer shop manager told me that none of the techs had ever worked on one. It took them 30 days to replace the clutch and reseal the differential, and I had to return after a week when I found a flex disc bolt on the ground under the car. The question that I have is can I inspect the timing change guides by looking through the oil fill port on the engine, if so what should I be looking for. I don’t have any chain rattle yet but I’d like to visually inspect it if possible. I have a 130,000 mile, Schwartz 2, Caramel, e39 M5 in good overall condition and would like to keep it for as long as it holds up. Appreciate your experience with these cars as increasingly we will have to repair them ourselves.
Hello Lance, you ear is the best tool for timing chain guides is your ear, if it isn't rattling then you are fine. They make an awful chatter when the guides fail, you can't miss it. I saw an M5 with timing chain guide failure and it sounded absolutely dreadful - and it was still running!
Hey tim do you know how a 645ci smg transmission can be serviced - it has slow gear changes and it also makes a hissing sound whenever the car is turned on or off. The throttle is also slightly jerky, especially when i let go of it during driving it slows down jerkily. - is this related? Thanks
It can be serviced Yousaf, but most garages shy away from it as it is quite complicated and need re-calibrating afterwards.
Hello Timm! I recently purchased a 2007 650i convertible. After getting home, we experienced a few issues. Check engine light came on, strange lights came on such as passenger seat belt warning, tighten gas cap, high battery drain and increased battery discharge. We have also experienced rough idles after getting fuel, followed by 1 back fire! The car only has 115,000kms. Is it worth repairing or did we end up with a lemon? The dealer has offered to take the car back, full price. I would love to hear your feed back. Thanks! From Ontario, Canada!
That sounds exact symptoms of a dying battery - don't try charging it, just replace it with a new AGM and you will be fine!
Hi Tim found an 650 2008 in Scotland not a convertible 650ci pan roof 85000 on clock going to ask Sellar to do walk around video and as in your last video check antifreeze and inside oil cap also exhaust smoke and then get it shipped to me as 7 hours away what do you think should I go up and view regards ed
It's always best to view in person - but if you have someone you can trust to look over the car all the better. A video would certainly help
Awesome knowledge, when areyou going on Mastermind, specialist subject 'BMW Engines'
Thanks Jonathan!
Hey Tim, I'm going to be looking and possibly buying a 2005 645 convertible. It has a clean title and has 80k miles on it. They are asking 8000 usd in the US here. Is that a good deal? I saw your other video so I'm going to spot check the oil fill cap and coolant container ad well as the smoke camera test. I'll check the floor and trunk for the leak test as well. Let me know what your thoughts are?
As long as you go in with your eyes open and follow my 'how to buy a good one' video you should be good - any smoke and walk away!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation no smoke, no water leak, no wet spot, oil cap opened and looked great, the only thing that didn't pass was the green coolant, so I'll have to change the coolant to blue.
Hi Tim, what about the earlier 645ci model?
I have no experience of the N62B44, and all my video's are made from personal experience, sorry!
What do you think about e63 645ci ? Are prices of these going to go up too, or just the bigger 4.8l ?
I think those prices will also go up Slim!
own my dream car e64 in the us at 19 and i agree its the last of the last :,)
Good man!
Hi Timm. Whats your thoughts on the E39 M5?
Love them, a fantastic car, watch out for the usual like chain guides!
