Actually I have done both. I have done a water only fast for 10 days and lost almost nothing (3 pounds in 10 days) A month later, I then tried a bulletproof coffee fast for 3 days and had 2 coffees a day and noting but water and coffee and lost an astonishing 15 pounds in 3 day. The religious orders of long ago wore hair shirts and not because they thought they were sinners - they knew they were sinners. They were uniting their suffering to Christs for all sinners. The “hairshirts” of today are our neighbors- charity is more important than mortification.

The bulletproof coffee just makes it realistic
Been drinking a cup nearly daily for over 3 months now and definitely losing weight - also way lower cravings for snacking and especially binging. Still some occasional beers and eating fast food but in a smaller amount and later in the day. I rarely eat breakfast foods before noon.
A year ago I needed to buy a larger belt size and wore it relatively above the middle notch because I'd gained 30lb the past 4 years and in mere months of bulletproof coffee - 20mins morning weights and a walk (decent 30-40 rep stuff for sweaty burn exercise, no need for back breaking max stuff) that belt is just about too big now down to the tightest notch. I had 3 months of the same morning exercise routine before without the bulletproof coffee and eating a small breakfast prior... much poorer results / motivation / and stronger cravings in the day. Still a belly but clothes are absolutely looser and less flab to grab for sure - I can jog/run/sprint outside again without many prickles and exhaustion.

Perhaps just a middle way? A black coffee and nothing else but water with or without a coffee? One to two cups per day. I will start this way for 24h than i am going for an autophagy fasting, some days more this way. Low/no carbs and not more than 20gr proteins per day. Next time i will make 72h black coffee only fasting, I would love"water only", but i doubt I will manage. Maybe in the summer, when I am not loosing so much energy to keep my body warm

    • @Brainbuster
      @Brainbuster Před 2 lety +5

I agree, it seems Dave is coming at fasting from a "weight loss goal" or "fat burning" goal perspective. When you drink butter every day, there is no autophagy and there is no "fasting." There may be fat-burning benefit to drinking butter/coffee only, but the benefits likely result from removing everything else we eat and drink. If you want the miraculous benefits of prolonged fasting, then water fast.
Not just "intermittent fasting," but prolonged fasting (at least 48 hrs). There's nearly a hundred years of scientific research on prolonged water fasts, on many species including humans. If Dave Asprey (dismissive of water fasting) could put the benefits of water fasting into a pill, he'd be the richest man in the world.

I have never had a cup of coffee in my life. Nor tea. Nor booze. Nor tobacco. I'm not religious in any way. I'm also not a healthfood person. I did have cancer and the thing that saved me was the no booze or tobacco. Which was nice. Albeit accidental. I've had tons of junkfoor in my life and used to drink 2 to 4 liters of soda a day. And I ate tons of sugar and processed foods.
Anyway, I've been fasting for months. 22 hours a day 6 days a week. Every 2 weeks, I do a 48 hour fast that ends on my 7th day where I eat 2 or 3 meals. I don't eat any sugar at all. I rarely ever eat bread or related. I don't eat any frozen foods, and I don't eat any processed foods.
That has been working very well for me. I rarely ever have hunger thoughts. The first week was a little strange but after that it just became normal and I'm quite used to it. I used to be a big fat guy. I've been going to the gym every day for a few months. I started with weights but now I do a rowing machine and a rock climbing gym. Much nicer. My scale doesn't move that much but my shape is completely changing.
My pants are looser and my shoulders, arms, and back are getting tighter. My gut is almost gone and my face is not nearly as round. So as far as I'm concerned with is working really really well.
As for the coffee thing, I see it this way. I used to rely on cafine to wake up and get the day started. When I cut soda out, the cafine was gone too. It gave me a headache the first day or two and then that was it. My working out at the gym and the fasting completely turned my system around. So I think the trying to fit coffee in is just a waste of time.
There is nothing wrong or difficult with just water fasting. No religious or hardness ideas need to be projected on it. I don't do it cuz it's harder. I do it cuz it's FASTING. Fasting is not putting things into your stomache except for water. If it's not water, I don't put things in. Although I do have to take medications for medical stuff.
To me, making excuses for coffee or tea or whatever is just that. Making excuses. I've been around humans all my life. And I've never had coffee with them, I've never had booze with them, and people who think it's their place to complain about that can piss off. :) I do what I want to do with my life. And there isn't a damned thing wrong with not having coffee.
Now, I will admit that I would love to just eat trash food and drink soda and eat candybars all day. I would literally love to do that some more. But I've had 5 heart attacks, 4 heart surgeries, cancer, 5 strokes. And I used to be a hell of an athelete. So I know why I'm in this. To stay alive. And so far it's working quite well. And if you will pardon the assumtive nature of this statement, you do NOT want a heart attack or heart surgery or cancer. lol
So I gave up EVERYTHING that I liked, and it was rediculously easy. So in my opinion, it's not about some ego thing about what's "harder." It's about keeping it rediculously simple and knwing what you can do and deal with. When I had cancer, I didn't have a single bite of food for over 5 weeks. THAT was freakin hard. Not so much the food part but all the cancer treatments that made food impossible.
Anyway, my advice is just go all the way at first. Do it till it no longer bothers you. THEN think about what you "SHOULD" do. The hell with "easing in." Just do it on day one. WHen ya get hungery, drink a ton of water and distract yourself for 5 of ten minutes. You'll fall into it in days or a week and after that, it's completely easy.

My approach is long as you can stay away from while you fasting is a great thing alot of people say don't drink coffee and water or don't you use sweetners but my thing is staying away from food breaking that food habit and not over eating and get to control eating I still think you going to lose a ton of weight if you just fast as way from food and go to one meal a day you'll be just find food is killing us well the wrong foods is killing us, so pushing back from the table is the key people should get real and tell the truth

Fasting means no food, water only. Some . . . well, actually many years ago I worked up to a longer fast with first 24-hour fasts, then 3-day fasts, and finally on to a seven-day fast on water only, and with good benefit. But to say one is fasting while eating any sort of food only seems silly to me. Does the word "fast" even have any sort of meaning in that instance? If one wants to actually fast, then I say step up and do it! But if not, spare me these word games, please. P. S. And I've never worn a hair shirt in my life.

or health, cell reset? Does the body go into autophogy with bulletproof coffee, NO if its over 50 calories, It does not. Does black coffee enhance autophogy YES
So Daves fast id good for what his goals were which was weight loss but he wont tell you or talk about autophagy b/c it effects what HE is selling. He is just a salesman selling his products. His glasses, his coffee beans, his MCT oil. Everything he creates is half the story all geared to sell his products. So beware
