The Cuban teams of the 80s and 90s were unbeatable. Mireya, Magalys Carvajal, Regla Torres (selected best volley playes of the XX century)... The list goes on and on. Three times olympic champions. It was insane. Mireya was definetely the inspiration of team Cuba. They were fearless and aggresive, and very technical as well. By the way, the matches against Brazil were truly exciting since there was a huuuge rivalry. Thanx for this video!!
If you're a ball boy in this match, you'd probably had to watch closely to where the balls were going because they're literally gonna get lost in the stands plus you'd be tired keeping track of the balls. Lol. No female volleyball player right now could come close to her level. She's just a league of her own. ✨
Thanks for bringing her up. I've always wondered why she is not better known. I'm Cuban and I remember as a kid how much I enjoyed her jumps and smashes. To many of my generation, she is the GOAT in the sport of volleyball, both male and female, and in my personal opinion one of the best athletes I've seen of any sports.

Mireya Luis is a cut above the rest when it comes to volleyball. The speed, height, angle and power of Mireya's spikes are unbelievable for her stature.......and all that, she consistently makes it look all too easy.

I'm going to flex I saw her practice several times with Magaly and Regla and they all were out of this world specially mireya I saw how high her jump was 110cm my friends!(males) played against them one of them was late for the block, she was free to hit the ball so she spiked so hard it touched my friends chest it pushed him back and he sofocated for a while he couldn't breath for like 10min. Also when they were practicing bump, set and spike they would look up because they would break the lamps of the gym frequently. Mireya is the greatest

Dude, I was playing in college in the mid 80s. Got to watch her live a few time. She is an all around player that could have won 5 gold medals in a row for Cuba, have not the Cuban boycott 2 Olympics. #MireyaLuisHoFGreatestWomanPlayerOfAllTime and comparable to top men's players.
You are right that nobody else has the power that she had. I noticed when watching footage, the opponents were good but just could not jump as high and hit as hard as her.
If you feel like that just by watching the highlights, imagine my being a Brazil supporter in those matches back in the day. I hated her, and then I loved her, and then I hated her, and then I loved her more, and then I didn't want her to play for Brazil to win, and then I wanted her to play and I was glad to witness that phenomenon... So many mixed feelings! That was a very strange and exciting time; I miss it so much!
The best matchups of any sports. We hated the Brazilians as well, although loved the matchups because not only they were at the Cubans' level but they were also some of the hottest athletes.

Erik, I was a setter playing in a small college in the 80s and got to travel and play in Europe and Africa a little bit. I got to watch a few of Cuban's game with Luis playing, she and her skills and abilities impressed me all these years. She is an all around player but most of us as fans, including me, pay attention to her spiking game. A few things about her spiking game that impressed me a lot are 1) she does jump high, 2) She also hit the ball at the height of her jump, and She has that soft legs and arms kick right before she make contact that seems like her hands is always connect on top of the ball hard. If it wasn't for politics and politicians, I think she would have won more gold and dominate women volleyball for longer time. No women players since or before play like her.
Right Erik, the best hitters under 6 ft, Mireya Luis, Rita Crockett, & Tee Williams from the 80s & 90s were magnificent hitting straight down because now people rely on their height. But their leaping ability was out of this world. There was something in the water with the Cuban hitters of the 90s which has never been replicated. But as close to that now with high leaping undersized players that can down the ball, Krystal Rivers is an unsung star. And in the NCAA, Yossi Pressley.

Cuban Volleyball women's team in the late 90's was at their peak of their career among anyone else... with the likes of Torres, Fernandes, Bell, Luis and the rookie Ruiz...watching in the Philippines and hoping to see them live In Manila was one of my bucket lists and I would say this is the second sport that Filipinos like to watch...
Now there's a blast from the past... great choice. Also, yes, balls were bouncier back in the day. But the game has also changed a lot. Blocking has become more effective with more taller players who are still very fast (we didn't have those in the 90s, like, at all) and you mention the hitting deep/high hands. Doesn't take away from her being absolutely amazing, of course. Probably for the best that she played in a time where her brilliance could result in these monster spikes.

The reason why the blockers are late or non existent is all the spikers of cuba in that era is lethal. They are using 6x2 attack formation. The only one who effectively use that formation consistently. Even the 2 setters/OH are very effective, thus, blockers are really having a hard time determining who is going to block. You have to watch the whole game not just clips to understand why blockers are like that.

Erik Shohi: you should make a video of Magaly Carvajal, the Cuban middle blocker. To me, the best blocker ever to play in this game. The first 5 minutes of the 1994 final world championship between Cuba and Brazil showed how dominant this middle blocker was. She practically blocked every hit from Brazil. She is a member of the Hall of Fame as well.
:) Good observation. The ball pressure was indeed much higher before the rallypoint system. It was quite easy to bounce a ball to the roof of an ordinary gym. She reached it in an Olympic arena though.
