So glad Zubrin and Musk got together. Zubrin was the original pioneer for Mars missions.

I worked at nasa for 3 years in the 70s but switched gears and went into medicine instead of research. My heart remains in space though. Even joined the mars society and attended conventions. Best of luck to Elon and Robert and friends.

Poor guy robert zubrin ... He has been trying to get funding to send a man on mars mission since the 70's but never got the back up .. now Elon Musk can do it because he got the money.

      Zubrin is very inspiring.
His level of ambition and passion burns so bright.
Imagine if just 30% of the planet had so much drive to get certain task's done.
We'd probably had colonized the moon and mars by now or at least other smaller nearby roids.

Wrong. Elon can do it because of his type of character, the perseverance and skillset. Bezos can't get to orbit despite being in space industry for 2 years longer than Elon and with 20x more funding.

When I was in high school, circa 1970, I had the opportunity to attend an event in which Jack Swigert spoke. He mentioned that NASA then spent less in one year than women in the U.S. spent on cosmetics. That stuck with me. Elon made the exact same comparison. I am sure it is an often repeated NASA statistic, but in relative terms it is amazing how inexpensive a space program can be.

Zubrin only proposed missions, but did not have the resources to actively pursue building the infrastrcuture needed for Mars mission, he always knocked on NASA's door.

Musk is spending his own money on a very ambitious goal. Zubrin tried to convince NASA spend tax payers money remaking Apollo and send two dozen tourists to Mars planting a flag.

Robert's face didn't fit. Plus as others have said, Elon is funding it himself.
I do believe that Elon isn't taking Dr Zubrin's knowledge and advice seriously enough though.
Robert wants smaller rockets to explore then build infrastructure. Elon seems to know something we all don't and is hellbent on getting as many people to Mars as possible in the shortest time.
But Elon doesn't want to create two different systems.
If only NASA could take care of the smaller settlement missions and Elon was the giant cruise ship taking the passengers.
I loved the wry smile on Robert's face when they were talking about fuel and he said "And you can make it on Mars".... like...... I came up with that... you're welcome!! 😎👌

Nah what Zubrin wants is to see a flag planted on Mars in his lifetime the way it was on mount Everest or the South pole.
      Robots do exploration just fine.
Beyond the silly dream about colonising Mars, the real deal about what Musk is doing is that he's creating a space shipping industry comparable to the see shipping one, and that's huge.

    • @oteimoto85
      @oteimoto85 Před rokem +1

@@halnineooo136 I don't agree that he just wants a flag planted. He was advocating a pragmatic way to get to Mars way before Starship. If he just wanted a flag, then Elon's plan would suit him just fine.
As for the transport and shipping, yes, of course.... and Robert discusses this in depth. I agree that it's a big draw. You need to make it financially viable just like the cost of flat screen TV's plummeted as they were more common.
Let's try, as people interested in manned space exploration to hope that the original task isn't forgotten.
I remain optimistic because god only knows there's not much to be optimistic about on earth 🙄😂

the only way to reduce the risk of crewed space flight to mars is to avoid the aerobraking which the solution is to just dangle a space elevator there worth 5 to 10 billion. if it's cargo only then no need for those expensive nuclear electric ship that the zubrin refuses to believe necessary. both him and muskrat are of the darwinism religion and believes in billions of years. how the hell is ethics a concern? might as well use ion drives and cryosuspend people while rotating. a cargo only based propulsion. as long as they survive ya can still dangle them with a thin ribbon of kevlar and jam pack them on a bigalow module and a notoriously closed greenhouse carbon and nitrogen loop cycle. a hyper efficient ecosystem which is needed on the moon and not mars.
