Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Aliens Welding Torch!
Vložit
- čas přidán 31. 05. 2022
- As part of his ongoing Aliens Colonial Marines armor cosplay, Adam has been recreating the distinct hand props from James Cameron's masterpiece. Using reference from his access to the original USCM welding torch prop, Adam completes his own using both 3D printed parts and scratch building the screen frame out of brass. Then it's time to try on some of his newly acquired armor for the first time!

I’m a firm believer that these being filmed solo are one of the best things to come from COVID. These make me feel like a kid again hanging around my dad’s workshop. I’m grateful for that when I just need to think.
@@freighter1097 I believe they're saying that the trend started the height of Covid-19 lockdowns.
Agreed. I very strongly prefer the videos he shoots solo.
100% agreed. Adam working solo has so much more energy, eccentricity and charm.
I like Adam's self shot vids as well. It seems, to me, that he's less distracted. Ok maybe that's not the right word. He does seem actually to go into what I would call hyper focus.
When 'it's just him' the Veil drops. He's really connecting. He's looking and actually seeing someone rather than seeing a camera. A connection energy happens, and it's the same exact energy that happens when talking to someone in person. It's a dissolving of space/time. When there are other people around it's different, he sees the camera.
I recognize it, the same thing happens with me.
So agree! Gives more of a view into his thought process! I’m here for it completely!
I just love the unapologetic nerdiness that Adam expresses when showing off his cosplay pieces, whether he's working on them, or sharing what he's bought.
yes!
The Adam.exe crashing was hilarious! 🤣
That was my favorite part! Great little Matrix reference if you ask me
Adam, while working on an Aliens prop : "Not like this..."
Me : Brain twists into a pretzel for over a minute, trying to place that scene in Aliens until I finally remember it's from the Matrix.
Don't DO that to me, man.
hhahaa Matrix came right into my mind when he said that.
I LOOVE that he´s constantly saying quotes from movies/series, my brother and i do the same aaall the time
Thanks Evan!! I was stuck on that too but still drawing a blank. Unscratched "brain itches" start to hurt after awhile....
Something that always struck me about the actors delivery of that line, is despite having an American accent for most of her other lines, that particular dialog came out sounding somewhat British.
Not sure how widely that was noticed by others though
@@kronabus199a Well she IS Australian
I remembered it right away!
"whatever you're gonna do - DO IT FAST!" Aliens is also one of my favorites. 😅
One of my favorite parts of Adam’s One-Day Builds is not the fact that they are so chill that I can fall asleep to them, but the fact that you can feel like you’re on a mini amusement park ride whenever you watch one
Adam, you need to use Stovax Grate Polish to weather the helmet to match the armour. Being an ex member of the UKCM group we followed the instructions on how to paint and weather our suits for an event we ran years ago at the Leicester Space Center where we ran an event similar to Alien War at The Trocadero in London (which i was lucky enough to experience when it was open).
We were told by Harry Harris (who owns the largest collection of Aliens props) that the original suits were painted with humbrol enamel paints, which creates a cartoon looking camo, but then weathered with Stovax. It's scary to apply, and several times I thought I'd ruined my armour, but the end result was compared to Hudsons suit (which id based my suit on as im a huge fan of the late Bill Paxton), which I stood next to at the event, and you couldn't tell the difference in the weathering.
It'd be really cool if you added in a blue laser driver at the welding tip wired to an acrylic pressure switch that turns on when you press it against your intended "weld"
That was what I was expecting, some kind of modification to make it more interesting, beyond a paint job
I've been following Adams "Aliens" builds for a while now, I've seen the pulse rifle video, the motion tracker, the armor. So I knew this was gonna be a pretty straight forward build. I though he might go into the technics of how it was built or what some of the original parts might have been.
Love this new editing style!
It is thanks to our newest team member, Josh Self!
@@tested Great job Josh!
I completely and utterly agree, Aliens is the best sequel ever made.
What an absolute treat, that you've reached a point as a maker and content creator, that you have the rare opportunity to visit places and hold original masterpieces in your own hands.
It's every nerds wet dream and you Adam, have reached this point on your own.
What an astounding achievement to cross off your bucket list.
Your dude, Decan.
Little question if you should see it, who is your favorite character from Aliens?
You would think it's obvious, but the more you think about it, the harder the choice gets LOL
Mine is absolutely Hudson lol "Game over man, GAME OVER!"
I would not disagree that "Aliens" is an excellent production. But when it comes to sequels...
...and the second being better than the first...
...one can never disregard, "Road Warrior!"
...and no, I am not a car buff.
...modifyman
In my reality, T2 and Aliens are in a dead heat for best sequel. I would never consider choosing between them.
Adam and the editors were having some fun with this one, lol
great timing, i JUST rewatched Aliens last night for 75 billionth time [might be an exaggeration, or it might not!]... it's like comfort food for the eyes. I can still remember my granda letting me stay up to watch it for the first time on TV [soooooo many years ago now] when I was a wee lad and being blown away by it.
I felt like that with the film The Day the Earth Stood Still. Sci fi is cool at any age.
Adam I could go on and on about how great I think you are an believe me I think your pretty good… and you’ve have taught me many things that’s I could not of learned from just from watching mythbusters. But what beings me joy is that every time my wife and I go out to tend to the chickens or our small garden, on the baby monitor we see our newborn and hear your voice teaching the progress of your prospects and I think then…. Yeah… she will be alright. Thank you. For being a true person and a true individual. The world needs more thinkers like you!
I love watching Adam's thought process come to life. I could watch him build stuff all day.
That is the greatest tiny torch ever
I love the subtitles, and all the other quirky editing - props to the editor!
I made my Colonial Marine armour from an old sheet of shower surround wall 15 years ago - a lot of heat gun and hair dryer work to mould the pieces into shape 🙂
When Adam was talking about attaching the screen to the resin piece and having both a registration and mechanical grab (10:16) my mind was blown. It’s finally given me a language to describe the reasoning to how I attach things that while innate to me I’ve always struggled to articulate.
I grew up playing Aliens in the back yard. I was always with either Hicks or Drake. Walking around sticking stick guns into holes saying "EAT THIS!" And, "Drake, we are leaving!" So much fun.
Adam is having a wild hair day and ngl I kinda love the little bit of extra chaos energy it adds.
Godspeed Mr. Ft. Worth, gone but never forgotten….
They make bright blue-white LEDs with a flicker circuit for "welding" scenes on model railroads & dioramas. You could easily fit one into that welder for a little more verisimilitude.
Might even be enough room for a speaker to make buzzing and arcing sounds.
I love watching your videos. The editing is amazing and I tend to learn something new every time. Take care and keep doing you, thank you.
Thank you, and thanks for the kind comment!
you said it so riight. Great job the dudes and dude'ets over at tested do.
Video editor needs an applause, as always another ace video!
@5:56 "I'm gonna dial this in until it's really precise" - proceeds to strike piece into place with the metal end of a pair of nippers. Everything is a thwacker, so good.
Adam's transformation into Doc Brown is nearing completion.
Nice quote from The Matrix, Switch saying"Not like this, not like this". loved the build
When I first saw that flip up lens I knew I had to make it real. So I built one to snap on my MIG gun for tacking things together. I still use it to this day.
Aliens is my absolute favourite movie and it's just such a delight to see a prop come to life like this.
Words cannot describe how happy it made me feel to see Adam in an actual Colonial marine armour, like a little kid on Christmas Just fantastic!
Now I want to see the building process of a motion tracker! :D
For the longest of time I've been thinking of making my own Colonial Marine armour but as faith would have it, I ended up with a Starship Troopers armour instead. Molded after a screen-used set so it's very accurate. But one day I'll have my own Colonial Marine armour too, already got a pulse rifle so that's a start. Everything starts with small steps.
Thank you for being such an inspiration and I love you for being such a joyful child in an adult body. Never stop being yourself :)
The design of this seems brilliant for actual practical use. I mean, having a shade built into a hand-held welder (or even brazing torch) certainly beats having to put on goggles or a hood. For torches that don't output too much light, i think this would be awesome.
I love that in this video Adam is a perfect blend of Doctor Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker.
What I find most interesting about this style of prop building, is trying to replicated the methods, materials and mistakes of the original model-maker, who, in-turn was either creating something from scratch or replicating something from life (or fantasy). As my daughter would say, it's very "meta".
Right, I like that Adam shows process and mistakes.
Adam, you should really look into 'Bend Allowance' and 'K factor' for bending sheet metal in the future. If you measure out your piece by the length of the flats on a straight piece of metal and neglect to calculate the bend allowances for the thickness of material, radius of the bend, and K factor for the given material type, you will always end up with a bent piece that is larger than you intended it.
The simple explanation is that regardless of whether you think a piece of metal is bent at 90 degrees, there will always be a small radii to the bend (it's almost impossible to bend a perfect 90 without inducing stress fractures) and if you imagine the length of a perimeter of a shape (let's say a square) is bent with radii at the corners instead of the full 90 degree point, less material will be used in the bend radii.
A simple calculation to adjust each flat-length pre-bend would remedy your conundrum with bending which I've witnessed a few times. There are even 'bend allowance calculator' apps that will calculate your desired length of run with the bend radii and material thickness to show the actual length of material to achieve your desired result.
Adam: "The idea is..."
Crickets in the night... LOL!
😳🤭😂🤣 Adam had a blowout. I love how the gear sounds.
State of the badass art!
So...future build is going to be the "steady-cam" heavy gun that Drake And Vasquez carried, right?
Love the "unscripted" nature of this video and all the random jokes. Don't know if I just missed that in other one day builds, but it definitely feels a lot more like being with Adam in his shop. Which is of course every grown man's greatest dream :D
Hey Adam!
If you tilt the head and handle of the lamp forward by about 45 degrees, so it points more over the shoulder rather than straight up out of the top of the box, then you can just about get your hand to the switch to turn it on!
They were like this on the screen used suits...
And yes, there were some differences between the made sets. Small, but definitely there!
Adam, the Colonial Marines armor looks fantastic. I’m jealous and I want a set.
Giant salute to ‘The Man’ Bill Paxton. The only person to ever star in all three amazing sci-fi franchises…Terminator, Aliens and The Predator.
and weird science
Another glorious day in the corps!
when you spend more than 2 days alone in the workshop .😁....love the build and the crazy noises we all make when no ones watching .. except we are 🤣🤣🤣
Didn’t you know he speaks fluent muppet as well as Wookie?
Great Max Headroom vibe with this vid.
Adam, your enjoyment is infectious, thanks for all of us who get so much from you. You take the financial hit on all these wonderful things so we can share with you for free.
Delightful editing Josh.
We'll pass it along!
Well, Adam, you've really done it now. I guess you're just going to have to rebuild your light from scratch and add a wireless remote switch to it, and hide the remote somewhere on the armor or the belt!
I am so jealous right now. Amazing armour!
"Dressed to kill"... Oh my god, I laughed out louder than I should have. :-)
adam gearing up at the end was awesome
Adam's face when he realized he couldn't reach the light to turn it on lol.
just watching Adams enthusiasm is contagious
I hope you know how much joy and hope it brings me during an extremely difficult time in my life to see someone so fully love what they do. You, sir, are an inspiration and may very well have saved lives.
Thanks.
Splendid work on your costume, I found this video very helpful. I am slowly putting together my Colonial Marine cosplay.
You’re descending into a special kind of madness in this one
I love your infectious enthusiasm! As a new follower, I thank you for these.
Hey Adam, pro tip for you: if you cap your CA glue dispenser after use it won't get clogged easily and the glue lasts longer.
I freaking love that tiny torch! Definitely handy. I love tiny tools that are useful
Watching Adam put on his armor enthusiastically was very wholesome.
That is beautiful! I'm so jealous. :) I made a set of USCM armor 35 years ago out of fiberglass and PVC. It was a nightmare trying to decipher all the personalizations on Bill Paxton's rig just from pausing the videotape and a few publicity photos. We are blessed with what is now available through internet searches. Thanks for the show and tell!
LOL! I was just working on my hand welder! :) It will be hanging off of my belt for a day at NY Comic Con in a few months.
You TOTALLY need to incorporate a butane torch into the welder and use it to light up one of Sgt. Apone's cigars - preferably a screen-accurate one
Adam, I just have to say when I saw the link page for this video - I saw the title, the pic, and then the look on your face. It is all such a perfect package. I mean that with respect, high regard, and good will. I find your sense of curiosity, wonder, and practicality so very addictive. It also doesn't hurt that you have a whole place filled bits & pieces of vitally necessary objects. Obvious: I'm a fan.
Sitting here watching while Adam is dressing not paying attention and I'm hoping for a Xenomorph to poke it's head in front of the screen. Turn to look at Adam. Then turns again to look at the the camera open it's mouth then sink back off screen. Now that would be hilarious. 👈🤣
This is just becoming a daily video diary of an ever-increasingly senile old man a few years after the apocalypse, and I love it!
I like when he said it was off by two hundred and fifty thousandth rather than quarter of an inch
Armor working from medieval and before to future Syfy is something incredible. One of my friends fathers along with my friend was a blacksmith. It was always fascinating that a job as such still existed in the early 2000's and the level of detail and blood, sweat, and tears that went into the trade was astonishing.
I'm looking forward to getting my nerf M41a pulse rifle in October. I have wanted that thing since I was a kid. I wanted to be Hicks.
Adam, been a fan from the beginning of Mythbusters, one of my favorite movies is alien, and I am a welder by trade. I now need to make this a real thing! Thanks
TBH, I'm kinda surprised that Adam hasn't made a real one! 😂
@@SkipTerrio you aren't wrong lol
I was just thinking I wanted to watch a new one day build! Loving this one
Those pesky executable files. Sometimes they corrupt and you have to reboot!
Love it!
Great video as always! A incredible coincidence, I’ve been playing through Alien Isolation for my first time and just yesterday I used this exact welding torch (“gas torch”) in the game. It’s a really intresting design in the game and it was a pleasure watching you make your own version of it!
I am intrigued by that vice that you have clamped in your bench vice. I had to screenshot it. I may have to make one.
It’s a leather stitching pony. Adam has a build video on it
@@laurencefrabotta1618 I'll have to look for that build video. Thanks
Speaking of sequels, the new Top Gun Maverick has a secret plane "Dark Star" that I'd love to see you build.
oh Man, I'm a massive fan of Aliens movie. I remember seeing it as a kid absolutely glued to my seat.
the movie had great tension that built up to the end. and the props are fantastic, one being my favorite is the Powerloader.
which I am going to build a model of soon.
I'll never be able to afford that armor but I'm having fun living thru you having fun. Awesome armor brother
“How do you turn the light on?” That killed me
I have the same "little torch" its fantastic for soldering!
Adams Tomb stone...."Oh yeah I went a little bit bigger" ;-)
Thank you for the Cornwall mention. Nigel Terry Excalibur.
OMG I LOVE KYLE HILL FOR LEADING ME HERE LMAO SO SWEET ADAM
That was awesome, and very cool thing, to watch.
Enjoyed this one but now that it's over what are we going to do, man? What are we going to do??? Game over, man.... GAME OVER!
My child hood hero and legend 🙌
You're living my wildest childhood fantasies wearing that full getup. Needs the motion tracker, and I could have swore you had one.
Amazing video and what a great costume 😩😍stay frosty
@21:50 At this point I'm surprised you're not just simply whipping out your white Permanent Marker for this 😁
Always great to see more Aliens stuff from you. Next up you have to join us Smartgunners ;-)
Adam being Adam, I'm half surprised he hasn't built an actual working Aliens torch.
Great casting.
I've been waiting for this, I have a lot of bulkheads to secure here at the base before nightfall
Love the build it's amazing and looks on point. Like you stepped out of the movie. Thanks for the video. 💯👍😎
You really nailed Switch’s death scene! 🏆
I’d love to see your torch cart!
If you're referring to the bright green cart, he made a video about it around five or six months ago.
Empire best sequel ever
awesome stuff Savage.
Whenever Adam uses the portable bandsaw, I keep hoping that we'll get a caption of: * Bandsaw noises, but smaller *
Great stuff Adam!
That's AWESOME !!!
Suit Looks Good! I would recommend suspenders on the top of your ab plate, it holds it from coming undone or folding. Also, I switched my steel Pod helmet to a plastic one....My neck was killing me! LOL! I would customize your armor to yourself! Maybe put your tape measure tattoo drawn on the armor or something like that. LOL! You also need a belt tool! I would recommend a sling on your PR to because of the weight. I got sole insets in my jungle boots for comfort.
Wow! Seeing my childhood dreams realized.
