    I don't understand how people think this is exclusionary. Two Spirit is a specific concept for natives that refers to non binary people in *THEIR* culture. We still have non binary people in *OUR* culture. Is it so hard to let natives keep the title of Two Spirit to themselves? Us non natives aren't losing anything because of it.

The culture in which you grew up in has more bearing on the reality you have seen and how you perceive things. I would say that a 12.5% Native American who grew up on a reserve knows far more about Native American problems then a 100% Native American who grew up in an upper-middle class family in the suburbs. That is not to say that based on the appearance of the 100% Native American wouldn't have an affect on how they are perceived and therfore they're perception of the world.

      @sebastianlightcap2764 Před 4 lety +13

      No, he’s not educating anyone, he’s just providing misleading and irrational information. TwoSpirit was a belief occasionally practiced solely by indigenous people. Not bald white millennials who wasted a hundred-thousand dollars on a “Gender Studies” degree and live comfortably in the modern era tweeting about zodiac signs. Look, this idea of people being identified and identifying themselves based on their specific human characteristics is nothing new and it’s been relevant since the dawn of man. Yeah, it’s called PERSONALITY! Everyone has one! It has nothing to do with gender! The reason why personality is confused with gender is because traditionally, in most languages other than English, almost everything belongs to TWO categories: masculine and feminine. We refer to these categories as gender. That’s right, the only role that “gender” plays is in semantics. And guess what? There’s only TWO of them! So of course, through the left’s way of attempting to take global ideas and incorporate them into everyday life, they introduced the idea of people as belonging to a combination of these categories. Since, of course, nobody acts completely masculine or feminine, the idea of infinite genders came into play. Well... it’s safe to say that this is just personality and character. I mean, there are technically an infinite amount of personalities since everybody’s unique. But to confuse this basic human idea with the idea of masculine and feminine in wordplay is beyond absurd.

      Sadia Oshanee von Wahl I don’t mean any disrespect your culture or your people, but that seems like a really stupid way of passing on knowledge. The human brain tends to get things wrong. They did a study where they took a bunch of 9/11 survivors and asked them questions about it after they had already taken a survey a year prior. Even though every one of them said they remembered it like it was yesterday, they actually told it a bit differently then they did the previous time, adding certain details and leaving out ones that were in there before. Also, I feel like writing things down in books so that multiple people can absorb that information. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for passing on traditions, but something as fragile as relying on the human memory isn’t very good idea lol.

If you want to be fair, the written language of tribes that have one is Latin because it was brought by white people (in my region I see quite a few Halq'eméylem signs). My point being, the written word is usually better then verbal as human memory can be deceiving, so in the modern day it’s probably better to have something written down just in case. XD

    also side note, no you shouldn't use the term two-spirit if you're not native. while you may identify with its fluidity and theory, it has specific cultural ties that literally do not count if you're not apart of the culture. not even people who have direct indigenous ancestry can always claim to be native because it's so much more than a title it is a lifestyle, it is upholding traditions, it is recounting stories, and it is connecting to your people

      Hi there, love to help! A Two Spirit person is not always transgender because Two Spirit is an umbrella term. A Two Spirit can identify as LGBTQ+ (for instance trans), but a Native LGBTQ+ person doesn't have to identify as Two Spirit. It's up to the individual, and their own tribe's teachings.

    As a person grappling with my own gender identity, I wondering what term I can use. I feel gender fluid in that I feel go between feeling like a man and womxn but at times feel like both or neither. I don't want to be offensive, so if I can't use two spirit, what might I use? I would look to my Druid or Jewish background but I am not finding a name there either.

    • @lynxaway
      @lynxaway Před 2 lety +6

      Genderfluid is a term‚ of course . So is bigender. I know it can be frustrating not to have something that feels like a tangible gender role‚ but Native Americans came together to create this term based on their traditions; that’s the important context for it. I’ve seen articles in passing about transness in Judaism too that you might want to look into!

    I learned so much in 6 minutes. It's a shock with what's being uncovered in Canada right now with the atrocities committed against native children at residential schools. We always knew but the stories of the victims were ignored. Same goes for two spirit people. What is commonly referred to now as being transgender or gender nonconforming, has always been recognized, respected and even revered in indigenous cultures. Eurocentric systems have honestly entrapped humanity in a very awful disturbing way, not stopping short of committing atrocities against people who don't fit into their narrow, strict, and honestly pompous systems... I'm speaking as a white nonbinary person... It's my responsibility to recognize my own privilege and help dismantle these systems. Let's get back to letting humans just be humans. And we have a lot of awful pain to make up for

    For a different viewpoint....the concept of a free nation is held dear to nearly all Indigenous here. Tribes split into so many clans and separate tribes because of a difference of options and beliefs. In vast majority of this, it was a respected decision and accepted nearly everywhere. Unless....harm is done.
    But our cultures have changed, and just like every human being on earth, we either March with that progression of discovery or maintain traditional values.
    Having said that, gender and biology were in fact separated for many tribes. Women and men would treated, in most cases, the same. Gender wasn't thought about at all. This is why two spirit is a new word, but not a new concept.
    We had no dictatorships because our world existed in hoops. No one was better than others to include nature and non humans. Many had council with the clan, in a circle, sometimes by fire pit, we shared meals, or tobacco, some alcohol has been found, and even hallucinogens. It was a welcomed event aimed at removing anger and grievances by unity. "We ALL want to speak and help you".
    Having said that, this is why this term is accepted as a large whole by our people. Just because we all don't feel the same way, and don't believe in some concepts doesn't mean we can't support that concept as long as it does no real harm. Who cares? No one...
    "American indians are told that we can be whatever we want to be in America, besides to be an American indian"
    This is a concept we should be supporting in the entire world. My sister clans need you. Our ancestors lived in a different world and society than we have today. Our healing paths for all whom live on turtle Island now needs to begin. Both sides need this. At only a bit over 1% of the US population represent us. If the world does not see us, does not know us, does not respect us than we will only become black letters in a book. Not humans.
    For us whom are younger and left our rez all we see is decay. When you see it with your own eyes, you realize that we need your help. Americans will have to become our keepers, and we need it to be kept in our own words. Not legends, but history.
