      Long rest is perfectly legitimate. They are in an abandoned hospital and the Myth pirates don't have a really good communication network. No surveillance den den mushi or anything. They don't even have reference points to navigate the labyrinth since the layout is always changing. One wrong turn fucks up a route. It's up to chance whether they find the guys or not.

      @Vierdro Před měsícem +23

      I think it was definitely fair for rustage to at least give them a chance to long rest since they did do preparation and the odds of it working while low shouldn't have been zero. And well in the worst case tpk i guess.

      Dont be so hard on yourself Rustage, you did the right thing, the party was all out of resources and unless they find Giro and he is as strong as Kai said It would be a tpk, on the other hand doing long rest’s could takes away the dificulty so the solution should be:
      1- Se if its possible to happen (do they know where the party is, are they well organized, is the party well hidden)
      2- Let it up to chance with the possibility of things getting even worst to create a risk
      3- Have consequences happen because they let time pass (Anchoor Arms geting captured and tortured)
      4- Increse the dificulty, it isnt a reset for the party, now that you know that they are at full power, mabye the enimes are in groups, maybe they make defensive possitions or traps and the final battle is not only Tavrock; the party got stronger so so do the enimies
      You did 1-3 so now the only thing left is (4) to make things dificult now for the full power party instead of the weakened one

      It is fine. You at least gave them a chance to long rest after all their preparations. And to be fair to them, it was quite needed unless you had another way to help them restore hp/spells. I am just glad nobody got super upset or too confrontational/passive aggressive about it. Though I admit it’s probably never fun when all the players are debating with the DM (and can sort of feel like being ganged up on).
      And now there is more of a timer with Anchor Arms and Mako now. Though it would result in more suffering for poor Anchor Arms, technically each long rest will get easier and easier since they will be killing more and more irreplaceable mythical zoans each day. Whether it be because fewer pirates can patrol, they are grouping up and covering less ground or even that some weaker ones might avoid the squad so as not to die.

    Branch 101 Performance Review #23:
    Kai: Use of military hand signs could use some work. Took the "Ghost Blaster" back from Hoover, before dropping it. His scream from seeing the banshee still rings in my ears. Introduced his "Mako's -javelin- Tsunami" technique against Grayl, a powerful ranged strike.
    Belle: Took hold of the "Ghost Blaster" Kai dropped, utilizing it against Grayl.
    Bradley Briggs: Absolutely TERRIFIED of ghosts. A bit too confident in his stealth inside the hospital. Introduced the "Sneaky Knee" technique against Grayl, kneeing her in the spine from behind. Performed the maneuver that lead Grayl to her own demise.
    Yokan: Ain't afraid of no ghosts, destroyed the banshee. As a cat, has an inherent half-advantage against griffons.
    Damian: Utilized his "Web Grenade", denying Grayl a means of escape by covering the hole in the ceiling. Thunder gauntlets continue to pay dividends, tactics wise.
    Choppa: Provided artillery support against Grayl (⌐■_■) Helped search the hospital for medkits, finding one :D Very good at crying sounds ;-;
    Taiga Kibbleton: A bit *too* into being gripped by Grayl. Ingested suspect substances.
    CASUALTY REPORT:
    Yokan: Stab wound from Grayl's beak, rendered unconscious after lacerations from Grayl's talons, returned to fighting condition via a medkit applied by Bradley.
    Damian: Lacerations from Grayl's talons, rendered unconscious by a stab wound from Grayl's beak, returned to fighting condition via Choppa rebooting his system.
    Taiga Kibbleton: Lacerations from Grayl's talons, bruises from being gripped and thrown across the room. Slipped onto the ground in a mad rush, no lasting damage.
    Raj: Lacerations from Grayl's talons, rendered unconscious via a stab wound from Grayl's beak, returned to fighting condition via a Damian "Sour Patch".
    (Anchor Arms is still running the restaurant. Heather's scared of Grayl, can't blame her, elated to see Grayl dead. Raj is absolutely not scared of ghosts, or griffons. Very risky choice to get a full 8 hours of rest while in this labyrinth while there's an active search effort against them(and Anchor Arms is isolated, that might be a problem as well), but this crew has assembled an admirably sophisticated set of counter-measures, let's see how this pans out. Good news is the Myth Pirates are down a bird of prey commander, and also Happy Birthday, Tekking.)

    I like to kind of imagine that Tavrok losing any of his crew is months/years of work/pirating wasted since he will need to hunt down that Mythical Zoan again. So every death on his crew hurts insanely much since each crewmate cannot just be casually replaced due to the rarity of Mythicals.
    So the crew killing a Medusa, Cerberus, Cyclops, Centaur, Ghost/Banshee, Griffon and probably a basilisk(?) will take many years at the minimum to replace.
    It’s even possible that with Grayl’s death, the Myth Pirates have lost a huge chunk of their overall power that will devastate Tavrok’s legion and probably severely the crew’s morale as they now know they are far from invincible even with insanely powerful zoans.

Branch 101 is hiding out in a place he made sure was abandoned. They can't track people in the labyrinth due to the devil fruit changing the layout. And to top it off, a lot of his crew follow him out of fear. With Grayl neutralized, they might see the writing on the wall and help the marines. And not just them, but the island people as well. The sky is open for them now

  • @LittleZbot
    @LittleZbot Před měsícem +13

    My view on the Long Rest situation is basically this: Rustage sees the entire area as a dungeon, but he actually designed it as if it were a kingdom.
    There’s long passageways with some hidden traps, sure, but rather than treasure rooms and enemy encounters, every door is its own self-contained city that, at best, very loosely communicates with the overarching police force on occaison. The Final Boss didn't even know we had entered the "dungeon" until he (very luckily) called to check in on Cerberus right after the party killed it and before they left. Had he happened to call a few minutes earlier or later, it could have genuinely been hours before he knew something was up. Then, when he did know about it, he didn’t send an alert to look out for them, no descriptors, no warnings, not even a "if you get any unusual customers, let me know" to the most popular rest stop in the labyrinth.
    This implies one of two things: either he doesn’t care about the party, or he and his crew have great trouble regularly navigating the labryinth or even sending basic messages through. Plus, his crew mostly rules over their own specific little areas, and are free to go wherever they want and do as they please. Greyll apparently spends all of her time outside the "dungeon" entirely. There's an entire town here, with its own patrol, alert system, businesses, economy, and job system, seperate entirely from the Myth Pirates that they live under the banner of. And that is entirely separate from the restaurant, and that is entirety seperate from the library, and it's implied there are many other places like these scattered throughout the labyrinth.
    No traditional enemies, no regular foes, no stalkers, regular stops for food, drink, and fun, recruitable party members, nothing about this area whatsoever says "dungeon." It's a kingdom, with a unique and interesting twist. And even if it’s an enemy kingdom, I can’t imagine a scenario where it would be impossible for a party to long rest whilst exploring one. Especially as the point of long resting in dungeons being bad isn’t because the evil Lich is hunting them down or whatever, it's that there are traps and monsters everywhere. In dungeons where that isn’t a constant worry, safe spaces are usually implemented even in modules. There are places to long rest in the Amber Temple. If you’re in a safe situation, there’s no reason it should automatically be illegal.
    And we know for a fact that either the Myth Pirates do not care that the party is killing them, or they are very, very bad at navigating this place. It's fair.
    And more than fair once the contingencies come in. Let's walk through this, once. After all of their prep, in order for the party to be discovered, the following MUST happen:
    1. Someone must be aware the Greyll is in the town, and not where she is 90% of the time, outside.
    2. Someone must register her leaving, and understand that this is not her going back to her favorite spot or to get something to eat, but rather because she knew where the intruders were and was going to fight them.
    3. This same someone must wait an appropriate amount of time to be concerned about Greyll, which would likely be at least an hour, especially with the level of confidence in Greyll even Heather had.
    4. This person must then use the (already established as terrible) communications network to check around the labyrinth and make sure she wasn’t hanging around somewhere else.
    5. Finally, at long last, a team of search parties can be organized.
    6. One of these parties must explore the town.
    7. That same party must decide to explore the derelict, abandoned hospital, despite there being no reasonable explanation for why the intruders would specifically be there.
    8. This same party would then encounter the sounds of the wailing ghosts, additional lighting, and other ambience that was set up by the intruders to make this area extremely unappealing. This party must decide to explore it anyway.
    9. After entering the least-reasonable and least-comfortable place in the city, the party must spend an extended amount of time there, exploring every area and inspecting every room.
    10. When the party reaches the location near the room the intruders are in, they would hear the recorded ghost crying in the area. This indicates that there cannot possibly be anyone near this specific area of the hospital, or else the ghost would have been "set off" and either be dead or screaming. The party must decide to ignore this and investigate this specific area anyway.
    11. The party must find the false wall, choose to feel it up for some inexplicable reason, and discover that there is an invisible door here.
    12. Upon opening the door, the intruder's traps, tricks, and alerts subtly give them enough time to leave the room through a hidden window so the party can investigate the room, conclude that nobody is here, and leave. To be found, something here has to somehow go wrong.
    13. Even if ALL of that is managed, all in a row, it MUST be accomplished within eight hours, whilst the search party has no clue whatsoever that they are on a time limit.
    I understand not wanting to ruin the game by allowing long rests in dungeons, but, man, at this point, not allowing one here almost feels like railroading.
    I respect the decision, but I wanted to share my thoughts, especially with so many other commenters claiming that Rustage was being overly generous.
    Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

      Agreed, but I will say that the communications network might not be that mad. Tavrok may just believe that nobody could survive all of his myth pirate members hunting them.
      Either way, whoever is looking for the intruders would have to go through a hell of a lot to get to them.

    Just wanted to say I actually enjoyed the long rest debate as both sides made good points and it wasn’t as if the players were being stupid, or trying to take advantage of Rustage. They knew the risks and as they said had multiple things, traps, secure location, a hidden room and escape plan in place. Not even including they fact they had no resources and Rustage did imply they had like 5 fights left before the end of this dungeon..Though 8 hours of prepping and scouting for enemies ones is really dangerous and they have other allies who aren’t hidden and in active risk that may die. They were screwed either way and based on their characters knowledge they made the best decision that would allow of their survival and Tavrocks death, despite it most likely dooming Gyro and Anchor Arms. Even Rustage himself had a “oh fuck” look on his face when he realised they had no hit dice left and little resources, so despite the risks they made their choice and will reap the boons and consequences of it. Peak D&D.

    I personally like how Rustage is able to compromise the rule in a seemingly "fair" (in my opinion) way when the players express frustration in the current situation but doesn't totally cave into the players demands and makes them work for that long rest and make a somewhat reasonable argument as to why the long rest should be possible in the first place. It truly did seem like a suicide mission and I'm happy things didn't turn out to be a team wipe.

    For those who don’t understand, the only reason Rustage made a point about the long rest is that he very clearly didn’t want to establish that they could just long rest whenever they wished, because that would remove all the stakes. So he was trying to make it clear that this was pretty much a onetime thing and would be basically impossible for them to do under any other circumstances.

      I would also say that with how the dungeon has been going so far, it isn't the easiest place the balance, encounterwise. Making most fights against single, important, homebrew opponents, while thematic, also makes those combats extremely swingy and thus difficult to predict and balance.
      Putting a group of enemies against the party gives multiple smaller hp bars, multiple smaller damage numbers that stack up and due to the many rolls the damage will lean more towards the average with less deviation. The increased action economy means the fight stays dynamic and it also means that the further into the fight you get, the more opponents get defeated and thus the average damage per round coming from the opponents decreases over time, meaning big unpredictable damage swings at the end of the fight are very unlikely. It makes it easier to predict how much resources will be used and thus how many encounters the group can theoretically take.
      Putting a single enemy against the party however comes with challenges, mostly because we want the singular enemy to feel just as impactful as a group of enemies. So its given much more hp and damage, both seemingly at the level of hp and damage that that group of enemies would have. They are given special reactions or legendary actions so the fights feel as dynamic as they do against groups. But that's where stuff gets tricky, because the high damage of the enemy as opposed to multiple smaller damage amounts from a group means that big swings are, much swingier, especially when they critically hit (as that would be like if all the enemies in the group crit). The high hp means that the damage doesn't decrease over time, because the single opponent can deal just as much damage at full hp as at 1 hp. And wanting to increase action economy often means the opponent is given ways of making their main attack outside of their turn as well, which doesn't feel as impactful but doubles to quadruples the potential damage output. So now we have an encounter that is inherently hard to balance and even harder to predict, with an average damage amount that looks okay on the surface but with such a massive standard deviation that with a few bad rolls, it does the damage equivalent of 4 other encounters, or almost nothing at all.
      I respect rustage deeply for his DMing and, as far as I know due to the 2 one piece dnd's, making encounters of mostly 1 big bad guy with maybe some lackeys is his favorite style of encounter building. But it does come with these massive swing risks, which was especially noticable with the damage numbers of opponents like Arzen and Blue-Blood, and it lends itself better to the 1-2 encounters per long rest style compared to in a dungeon crawl environment with an expected 6-8 encounters.

    I think this situation might have been a bit of a miscalculation on rustages part on how little resources they had left. No hit dice or spells and they would have to fight at the very least the scorpion guy and tavrok. So it was either risk dying in their sleep or walk into the final boss with 6 health a piece. I think rustage made the right decision to let them roll to see if they would succeed in resting aswell. It just reminds me of the blue blood final boss run where they were fighting commander after commander and then had to fight blue blood with basically no heals. The difference is the DLP had navy support, lots of npcs and they were higher level. But its okay no dm is perfect and i think the situation was handled well and i think rustage is a great dm

      @NexIsLazy Před měsícem +11

      I don't think this was a miscalculation. This was a suicide mission from the start and this entire campaign has been on the harder end of encounters in general because he knows that the players have a lot of experience in handling tough situations because of the first campaign. It's also pretty tough because early on, the players were rolling super badly (against Medusa and Cerberus guys) so they were in a disadvantageous position, even in this super hard campaign. I agree with the rest of your points and yes, rustage is a goated dm :)

    The roll of outcomes + the fact that long resting left Anchor Arms vulnerable is the exact way to balance long resting in the middle of a dungeon. If the party is at such low health that they can't reasonably expect to survive the next boss encounter, they have no incentive to go through with that encounter. That's fine if they have a way to retreat and return later (either after finding safe ground to long rest in or grinding lesser encounters for xp in order to level up), but if they have no option to retreat, granting them an avenue to long rest that leads to unforeseen negative consequences that aren't just "well you die anyway" is the only satisfying way to handle it.

    I think rustage handled the discussion very well. Not wanting to let the players dictate the game but also wanting to be decently fair. I think the players were right to need to long rest because yes it is a dungeon but they had no ways to heal whatsoever and if they couldnt find enough heals to go into battle at the one place that would have some (the hospital they're staying in) there would be no point to go into multiple hard fights with 10 health each and no spells, they would just die. So they really had no choice, it was either hoing into a battle with a commander with low health and no spells and then tavrok afterwards it wouldve been literally impossible for them to survive unless rustage had a deus ex machina where they find some fountain in the labyrinth that brings them to full but the players had no guarantee that would happen. Also think about it from the characters perspective. Luffy couldnt be sent off of onigashima and go right back uo without healing even though there was a raid on an emperor happening. Even though anything could happen while he was gone he had to heal up or there would be no point in going back up since he was so hurt. But all in all i think rustage made the right decision in the end

    I'm just going to reiterate points I made in a reply to criticism on rustage's decision in the community post and the players' mindset.
    I think his point of view made perfect sense. They were in enemy territory, and a lot can happen in 8 whole hours. The enemy wouldn't just sit back and do nothing while 8 entire hours passed, Taverok would either prepare quite a bit, thus increasing the difficulty of upcoming fights, or end up finding them. Sleeping in enemy territory is incredibly risky no matter how you spin it, no sane person actively invading would do this.
    On the other hand, the dungeon is very unique, I mean it even has a town in it. But I think the point still remains that it's literally enemy territory and sleeping here is just asking to get ambushed.

      yeah, i can see both sides easily, on the one hand, i wouldn't want to even attempt a long rest if i was one of the characters unless i was extremely beat up an exhausted in that situation, which i can imagine the characters would be exhausted/tired at that point even besides the wounds, on the other, with good enough preparation, it would be very unlikely to be discovered, to the point i personally would have made the chance of just getting the long rest 1-15 or 1-20 just due to how much they prepared, specifically the false walls for the door and window, although with the roll made would have made no difference, plus, with the guy who found them, chances are he might have ended up just not noticing the wall, since it wasn't really specified which side of the hallway he had his arm against, plus depending on how the false wall was set up (say they basically just changed how the door/doorway looked), it might have worked just like the walls anyway

      Rustage’s point that a lot can happen in 8 hours and they can’t do that all the time are valid points, but I think the players understand that because they’ve been in this situation before with Blue Blood.
      They have no hp, no hit dice, no spells, no nothing. If they end up running into anyone, especially if they end up running into tavrok, it is a guaranteed tpk no questions.
      The only option they have really is long rest. They could maybe find their way back out but that also runs the risk of running into somebody, and the labyrinth being confusing. They also said they would make the proper preparations, making it very, very hard for anyone except the smartest people to figure out where they were.

    I think the long rest discussion makes a lot of sense. I am definitely happy it was left in. Both sides made really good points and it really is less of an argument and more of a discussion of info we have had throughour this whole arc. The characters and the audience came into this knowing and understanding that the Myth Pirates were for sure going to be very strong and despicable opponents and Gus literally bet on them losing before, its obvious he has sent them on another suicide mission. The players also have valid arguments too it would be fruitless going into a fight with Tavrock or any of his other commanders with this low amount of health and lack of class based actions. This makes sense story wise the crew is under lots of stress in their situation and similar to the Kasperov situation in One Piece DnD with this type of gauntlet the npcs being in danger because they are in enemy territory gives their circumstances more realism. As a dnd player and sometimes DM this is how I love dnd being played, group made decisions and a good discussion that allows creativity to be used in the world. This has to be one of the toughest situations that they have been in! This dungeon was very tough with a lot of the team going down and nearly dying, not to mention that they are almost out of resources, so I can understand why they are so desperate that they need to do a long rest, but I can understand Rustage's point of view especially since he is the Dungeon Master, since he knows the consequences for doing a long rest in a dungeon. There were two other situations similar to this in the OG One Piece D&D. In the Rain arc, after the Devil's Luck Pirates defeated Arzen, they were running out of resources and where heavily damaged, however William's Brother Trevor was kidnapped, they had the option either to short rest or long rest, it was a desperate time and Trevor's life was on the line, but they ultimately short rested. The other situation was in the Blue Blood arc, where the Devil's Luck Pirates entered Emperor Blue Blood territory, however the crew got separated and had to fight Blue Blood's Commanders and they were also running out of resources. If in either of those situations they choose to long rest, Trevor probably would have died in the Rain arc and the some of the Devil's Luck Crew could have died and they were lucky that the Marines were there to provide them with some Medical Kits and to defeat the other Commander otherwise, I think most of if not the whole crew could have died against Blue Blood. In this scenario, they were lucky to find some medical kits, but this is so bad that there isn't much they can do. I doubt they can call for backup because Bailey is in the West Blue, so she's too far away to help them in time and there's no way Gus is sending reinforcements because he's expecting for the crew to die here, since he basically sent them on a suicide mission. Their only hope is to find Jiro, however due this place being a Labyrinth, there no way of knowing where Jiro is, so they could risk fighting another enemy to find him or running into the other commander that remains. They could fight the Captain and hope that Jiro defeated the other Commander and saves them, but they might die before he can make it. Desperate Times call for Desperate Measures, so they had to take the long rest.They got really lucky here, this could have been Game Over if Luck wasn't on their side. However, if they defeat the single guy and get the long rest, there still will be consequences, it's either Jiro dies or Anchors Arms and Kai's grandfather dies if not all three, long rests in the dungeon runs the risks of your team and your allies dying since it gives the enemy maybe enough to find you and your allies. At the end of day Rustage did warn the team about the risks of long resting in a dungeon and they took the chance to keep the campaign going, they know what the stakes are, so what ever happens, just happens, lets enjoy One Piece D&D Marines and hope they make it all the way to the end.

    This was the best consequences-based episode. There needs to be a danger element to every decision made. The long rest in this episode was more than fair, it shows the consequences of the players’ plans. The other way they could have done it was to have people take turns on night watch. Rustage cares enough about his players that he doesn’t want them to just get slaughtered, but they also need to be aware of the repercussions of their actions. Actions equal reactions which bring on unexpected consequences. Thanks Rustage

    I don't know why anyone would criticize Rustage over the long rest. There's a bunch of ways to handle short rests abd long rests, and when players want to do a multi-day dungeon (in-game time) or they have the spells/tools/supplies/skills/opportunity to take a long rest in a risky area, I handle it in a similar way to Rustage. Rests can be interrupted, and you generally need minimally 6 hours of sleep and 2 hours of light activity so you can do watches and such (unless you are an elf or warforged or some other exception). They tried to long rest, Rustage rolled for a possible interruption, and the hostile npcs continue acting during that time. That is literally how its supposed to be ran. Good on Rustage for being reasonable and making use of the resting mechanics in the proper way.

    Rustage is actually the best DM I have ever seen in my whole life no joke I’ve watched other DND podcasts they’re funny but not as funny as one piece D&D or one piece DND marines In my opinion Rustage is great at making a story that’s funny and serious at the same time and that’s very impressive. Don’t talk shit about my favorite DM. Even if it is himself.

    Rustage, let me just tell you that I've been watching OP D&D, OP D&D Marines, Isekai D&D, AND Pokèmon D&D since their creation and have rarely fallen behind. I've been watching Critical Role Campaign 3 since it started and am currently around 9 episodes behind. You are a great DM and player, never compare yourself to others, okay. Yes, Matt and Brendan are fun, creative DMs, but so are you. They've made mistakes in a few of their campaigns and admit multiple times they aren't perfect and ANY DMs style is amazing, which means YOU. I've stayed up to date on all your games because you're entertaining, so chin up, bud. I look forward to the next installment.

    Rustage I think this is why I enjoy watching you DM as opposed to anyone else. You just go with whatever makes the players have the most fun and not being such a stickler to the rules or what’s accepted while still keeping it fair. :D

      Yeah, characters in one piece usually do take rests even when they are in the middle of enemy territory it's not a gauntlet, the closest thing was likely wano and even there luffy had the equivalent of several full restores and short rests in the middle of the final boss

    this is similar to when they wanted to rest in blue bloods territory and rustange is like "he'll find you" practically, the chances of him finding them in 8 hours (if they hide well) Is extremely low, but mechanically he wants them to keep going through the "dungeon" on pure mechanics, i kinda just wish rustage would tell them they cant do it, straight up. when this did come up, i thought of how in actual one piece, nearly every arc consists of the characters hiding for awhile, like they spend alot of time on wano, luffy escapes the prison and they continue to hide for like another week, or similarly in whole cake island they take a long rest with gang bege, or other anime like bleach when ichigo just ditches the plot for awhile to train for bankai

    Their only options were either long rest or say "fuck it we ball" and keep picking fights while on barely 15 hp. I'm not saying Rustage hates long rests, but over the years I have noticed it's one of the few things he gets defensive about and will do the absolute most to convince the group against doing it. Notice how the Myth pirates haven't been all that good at finding or even noticing the group as they've been literally walking around, but when they wanna sleep in a secluded building ALL OF A SUDDEN the entire crew, captain included, will automatically know where they are? Come on son. 😏

    • @carso1500
      @carso1500 Před měsícem +8

      I kind of understand him to be honest, a group of 4 level 6/7 PCs with all their resources plus a bunch of NPCs is pretty powerful, challenging such a group can be hard but at the same time i feel like he went overboard with the dificulty this time by the end of that fight they were spent
      Honestly if this was my sesión i would allow them to rest but make it so that the enemy forces have consolidated in a single location so that they have a harder time than they would initially but still it's a challenge that they can take

    • @crusiver8453
      @crusiver8453 Před měsícem +6

      They cant find them because when theyre walking around its within two hours of the place. They arent spending/sleeping one place for EIGHT HOURS. Heck, the griffin lady found them for the small time they were in the hospital.

    • @_NIKOS9_NIKOS
      @_NIKOS9_NIKOS Před měsícem +6

      Idk man, the Griffin found them almost as soon as they entered the city.
      Pluss, after killing 4 important members and freeing prisoners, they were bound to start searching for them.
      I am not saying that the long rest was a bad idea, but I feel like there was a better place to do it (like the library) without leaving Anchorarms and Granpa to the tavern run and used by the enemy.
